The book is principally in the character of an itinerary, begin? ning with the author's embarkation, May 28, I sj!?, at London for Hamburg. 1 h ore is a description of Hamburg, next of Berlin and em irons,Dresden und her art treasures, Carlsbad, Fianzensbad, Frank? fort, Heidelberg, Baden Baden, Bale, Bieune, Neu. ch at el. The book is not one that invites criticism, aud we content ourselves by giving tito foregoing list of topics treated. We may be pardoned for sug? gesting, however, that the interludes (if we may use the word) of literary criticism, while very pleasant, are in most eases too brief ; thus SCHIL? LER and his "William Tell" have ?rily one brief page allotted to them. -e BATTEAI RACE.- The publicity given to this race by the papen attracted numbers to the scene, and West "'oint. According to thc programme, the boats were collected at West Point Mill, and at a few minutes past 3 started from that point.? Only five boats were entered, though it wa? anticipated that a larger number would be in attendance, many who designed entering hi ing deterred by some unfore? seen occurrence. Mr. J. p.. A RAFT OF TIMBER, WITH EIGHT MEX ON BOARD, SIX MILES \T SEA. . 'ihe Savannah AVMW and Herald, ol Monday, 3a.vs: "On Saturday thc sloop Miriam und Caroline, Capt. LION, arrived at this port from Bluffton, S. C.. having on board eight men who were rescued from n raft of timber which had gone out to sea. The raft came from South Carolina. The manager of tho same, a white mau, being asleep when it readied the month of the river, it was carried out by tho tide to sea. They foung themselves passing tho ship JRlSMWiftil, at TJ-IHJO, and called for a rope to secure the raft, but being unheeded, they were swept along until op? posite Pybeo Light, when tho keeper put out bi his boat and rescued Hie crew, seven colored and one white man, who were brought to Savannah, as above stated, by the Miriam awl Caroline. The raft being left to its fate, it was broken up on the breakers and; hnce thc shore of North Tybee Island." THE HEALTH OF THE CITY.-We have again and again stated that Charleston has never enjoyed better health than during tho past summer and present season. Every care lias been taken by the Board of Health, the municipal, and military au? thorities to place the city in a thorough sanitory ?ondition, and it needs but a perusal of the mortu iry reports, which are published weekly in the .ity papers, to refute any false statement that may be made. We learn thai certain part io? who are travelling throughout the State, probably Northern ?misaarios, aro striving to prejudice the country merchants against Charleston by circulating a re? port of yellow fever. This rumor has already de? terred scvoral merchants from visiting the city, but Dur only answer is tho published report of Dr. GEO. 9. PELZ ER ; by this it will be seen that but twelve whites and seventeen blacks diod in this city during the past woek, and none of the deaths were caused by any epidemic. The mortuary reporte are ofil isl and authentic, and any statement to tho contrary is false And malicious, and originated by designing partios. REGISTRATION IN THE CITY AND STATE.- The re? turns from the different precincts throughout the State, though not complete, are sufncienlly ad? vanced to form an approximate idea of tho total. In tho City of Charleston, to the 20th inf ant, S2S9 white voters were registered, to 5101 colored; giving a colored majority of 1812. The different districts of the State, ns far a? heard from, giv< 23,392 whites, to 47,388 colored voters; leaving majority in favor of the negroes of 23,991. This, added to the majority in Charleston, will give thom a clear majority of 25,800 in tho entire State. It will bo seen, from this statement, that the blacks outnumber the whiles almost two to on--, aa but 26,631 white mines wore enrolled, to 52,487 colored. It has been said that figures never lie, and the result shows a palpable want of animation among the whites. The importance of promptly registering has been frequently alluded to in our columns, and at tho ileventh hour we again urge all white citizens, who have neglected this great duty, to come forward and register. There is yet timo, and the coon try and State alike demand their services. BILL OE MOUTAI.ITI. - Return of deaths within the city of Charleston for the week ending Septem? ber 2 J st, 1S67: DIMKASES. D., (ity Begistrar. ?*--o CHARLESTON ENTERPRISE.-Thc finn or Messrs. JNO. ROBINSON & Co., of this city was formed some months since by several young Charleston iaus, with the intention of ougaging in the cotton mending and packing business. Though in opera? tion but a short time tho . -^-partnership has proved successful, and, during the winter months, the business will bocomo one of some magnitude. The few arrivals of new cotton havu already pro di ced a beneficial "fleet by infusing new life in thoae>ommereial houses that deal in thc staple. Messrs. JNO. ROBINSON & Co., have felt this magic influence, and have been actively engaged in pre? paring their forces to meet the issue. They have rented an office at No. 22 North Commercial Wharf, and have erected a hand-power cotton preas, in which they pack the cotton samples pur? chased from the factors. The press is tho work of Mr. JESSE JONE.-, a Charleston mechanic, and is iu many respecta su? perior to those or Northern makers. Mr. JONES has secured a patent for his press, aud hus already designed several improvements which will facili? tate tho work of compressing by lessening the la? bor. The one employed by Messrs. ROBINSON .X Co. was the first mado by Mr. JONES, and is worked by a eiauk und cog wheels, lt occupies u portion of the bist and second stories of the building, and the process of packing is conducted as follows: The cotton is placed in a compartment in the sec? ond story, tho top of the press is then firmly braced on, completely enclosing it, and the pres? sure is given below by means of a long wooden liandla, which is connected with a cog wheel. Thia pressure is entirely upwards, ?nd the cotton subjected to a gradual but forcible squeezing un? til its dimensions reach the required size. - he compartment or hos. at the top of thc press has a capacity of 500 pounds, but the hales are often of difiereut weights, and th? machiuery can be graduated to suit the quantity of cotton to he packed. S;neu this presa has been in operation Messrs. ROBINSON & Co. have turned out u nnptber of bRles that for neatness and firm, close packing will ..ompare favorably with those in the. hands ?>! fac? tor* that were packed by the common country screw. Mr. C. K. HUGER, of this city, is Ute agent for the JONES'Press, and is prepared t.. receive orders for the same. As yet this picas is hut little known, but il ia destined to aupersode not-only the horse powar screw but many of thc hand presses now in usc. in baling the cotton Messrs. ROBINSON & Co. have decided to use the iron ticas preferable in every respect to rope. After trying thc merits of the different patents they have decided to usc* thc WAILEY, tie, Which has a self-adjusting huckle., and the bale can bu subjected to steam pressure with cit injuium the efficacy of thc tic.
