HINTS TO SMOKEBS.- As we know of several iu dividual^ in this community, who make a habit of j smoking, we have tr. ought tho following advice, from the Courrier des Etais Unis, may be of ser? vice to some of them. The pipe is less wbjoctionable than either a segar or cigarette, but, by all that is decent, never smoke the pipe of another. Finally, persons of a nervous and bilious temperament have everything to fear from the use of tobacco; those of a lymphatic temperament alone can brave nicotine with impunity. DB. BB?NS' SCHOOL.-The school of HXNSY M. BB?NS, LL. D., as appears by an advertisement in our columns this morning, will be reopened on the first of October. There is no citizen of Charles? ton who would require to be told anything at all about the capabilities of Dr. BBUNS as a teacher. For years he filled with distinguished honor the position of head of the High School of this city, and many of the parents of the youth of to-day can bear testimony not only to his skill and ability as a teacher, but also to his lovable nature as a man; and there is no one with whom he has ever been thrown in contact, who will not heartily con? gratulate him on his success as a teacher, and as heartily wish for a continuance of " "s prosperity in the tiold for which ho is so well th :eJ by nature and by cultivation. PHINTEB'S LANGUAGE.--Every profession has its technical terms, and that of the Printer is not without its "small smattering, " which is only in? telligible to the craft and those who have for some time been intimately connected with the business. Their business conversation is daily interspersed with singular expressions which have a strange sound to those unacquainted with their meaning. The following specimen contains a few directions given by the foreman of an office to the hands a few days since. It don't mean as much, however, as it would seem to the uninitiated. The members of the profession will enter at once into the mean? ing and think the expressions most natural : "Jim, put General Grant on the gallev, and then finish the murder of that young girl you com? menced yesterday. Set up the ruins of that fac? tory; distribute the cholera; you need not finish that runaway match; have the high water in the paper to-morrow; let the pi alone until after din? ner, but put the barbecue to press, and then go to the devil and he will tell you about the work for the morning."' ThE POPULATION or WILMINGTON, N. C.-The Wilmington, (N. C.) Post of Saturday, makes the following statement in reference to the population of that town. Its suggestions in regard to the ne? cessity of a new census, apply with equal force to cur own city. Let us have a new num bering of | the people. Thero are so mauv conflicting opinions in regard to the real nnmorical strength of this city, that we should be glad to see the matter at once set at rest, by a regularly taken census, conducted under official auspices. The many 'changes caused by the war and its result, were such that t be last cen? sus of 18CO can be taken as uo criterion upon which to found an opiniou of the present popula? tion, lt has been estimated by those whose posi? tion should entitle them to a correct knowledge, that there are now in this city between thirteen and fifteen thousand souls.
