They speak rightly of tho modicum of human kindness lingering in the breast of land? lords. We sunply speak of this to remmd those of our citizens who are landlords, if they thould acci? dentally receive high runts, I o bo merciful, for a season, to those who are so unfortunate as tu bu forced to rent. "He that giveth to tho poor, lend enth to the Lord THL Ariou3TA STREET RAILROAD.- Tho Con stuutionalist ol yesterday says : "Commendable progress is lasing made with the streot railroad. The cross-ties and stringers have been put down in Lincoln street, between Broad aud Ellis, and the track will soon be completed to the cemetery. The line of tho road, tor tho present, within the city limits, will bo as follows : On the south side of Broad, from Mc Kinne to Lincoln, down Lincoln to Watkins, np Watkins to Elbert, through that street to th* north side of Greene, ti?. We prosun .'he inhabitants of the Sand Hills will not be tong in concluding that an estensiou of the road to thoir doors will bo just what is needed to enhance property there." MT. PLEA?AKT. -Our readers have already seen a notice of the re-opening of the Congregational Church at Mount Pleasant. We are pleased to re? fer them to an advertisement in another column announcing service in that church to-morrow; and, we are informed, that it is the purpose of the offi? cers to hold regular service hereafter. We are sorry to learn that the budding sustain? ed serious damage while it was used as a hospital and schoolroom. It suffered the lo?sof all its pews, and there are but a few whole glasses in its sashes. The congregation is unable to repair these in? juries and supply tlicso losses without assistance. They therefore tall upon our community for help. They do this with the greater confidence inas? much as the congregation will be composed ot va? rious sects, and be served by the ministers of tho several denominations. Persons desirous to contribute to this worthy object will please remit to Mr. JOHN FERGUSON, Mount Pleasant Ferry. A HANDSOME HAT.-If any of our readers have a currioaity to see the latest agony of style in t he hat Une-such as makes oue wonder as he wallu the pace of Broadway, they may bc gratified by a visit to the store of Messrs. HORSEY & Co., our neighbors in Mayne strtPt. These gentloman have recently received from the North somo startling acquisitions to their'wholesale stock, and as our people are fond of imitation, South Carolina is like? ly to be astonished by the innovations made in th - general appearance of bead gear, as represented in the above establishment. The etyies aro not more uutn than they are. at? tractive ; but taste is as much a matter of exam? ple as of sentiment, and Messrs. n. & Co., will, doubtless, be liberally rewarded fjr their invest? ment. These remarks apply equally well to the upper storv of their house, where there is beauty enough in the collection of hats and feath? ers to mako a handsome woman distracted and her husband an impoverished lunatic in his vain endeavors to supply the demand created by that inevitable "waterfalL" PROFESSOR JAMES H. CARLISLE.-From the Ab? beville Banner we learn that, on Friday, the Cth instant, there was a Convection of the Sunday Schools af "Ninety-six" Circuit, held at Lebanon Church. After the preliminary exercises Profes? sor CARLISLE, of Wofford College, was introduced. The Banner says : "Of las addresses, even if our space would allow it, v e shall offer no extended outline. That would be to mar then' beauty, as those who have heard Professor CARLISLE nell know. If Iiis words could be transferred to paper, there would yet be wanting the soul which his ut? terance only can put into them. His ?pening re? marks to the children wore to impress upon them the importance ol punctual attendance and careful study of lessons. The story of JESUS al the Tem? ple suggested a line of remark, ino loading object of which was to present the Saviour us a divine modol for mutation by Christian children. Tho ?peaker narrated tho striking incidents in the life of the Saviour, occuniuL' vvhen he about the agc of j most of tho youthful listeners, and gave a beauti? ful delineation of tho cbiractcr of JESUS as a boy at Nazareth : as a escher of men and performer of miracles in mature a?o; M annal scrnfice for man : in ear?y jou'h consecrating himself to the work of tL. Father, and honoring Goi> m every act of life. This was the grand idea, developed in that happv manner by which great thouthtH are made clear to the compr?hension of childhood. At the close of 11 icse remnrlis, another hymn was sung, after which Professor CARLISLE addressed parents on thu dut . of teaching their children to I grow np in tho image of Christ. He quoted the words, "But whoso shall off nd one of these little ones." etc., and proceeded to show what is meant by "offending," and some of the ways by w hich parents may incur the penalty of this Min by living in open violation of God's commandments by neglect of church privileges -b> blasphemy, or doubtmg tba providence of God-by intemper? ance-by simply manifesting no care about re? ligion-by neglecting to giv.i their children re Bgioiia instruction and reading. He spoke of thc great responsib?ity imposed upon parents, as one which they cannot escape, and of tho positive scriptural promises that a blessing always rests on the households of godly parents. These thoughts were presented in a line of earnest argument that could not fail to make tts wa.v directly to the head and heart of every hearer. HoBBsaiEa.-Ber. Dr. THO3. So tho .Assistant Cornmissionor of the Freedrn Burean, in his report to Headquarters, called attention of the General Government to tho that a portion of ehe negroes on the coast iud in Fetish practices, yield to the most absurd Institutions, are degenerated, demoralized, lit subjects for the exorcise of the beautiful eli ties of tho American Missionary Society am kindred associations. Another evidence of the return rt the rac, "first principles," is tarnished in a private lo troni a planter on one of tho islands. He sa ' Would you believe it, the negroes have taker the spinning of cotton with thc old-fashioned '? der""-(pronounced with a hard "g"). H have never seen the contrivance, fancy a st little longer than a pen-handle, with a bulb weight attached to its lower third. This is made to whii I by hand in tho base o tea cup or something of the sort. The can uoiluu is then wound spirally around, and dra off from the upper extremity iu the shape of ya The operation is simple, effective, slow; and ; would be surprised ut tho rapidity with which tl diminish a pile of cotton on ono hand, and add the value of a merchantable article on the otlir To our reportorial conception, the above desct lion is as clear as mud. Tho " gindor " may b tangible fact. We should like to see it; and af looking at the ebon finger power, to take I owner thereof into the presence of the improi macliiuery of the day, and make him disgusl with himself. But there ?B something more si gestive than the idea of ignorance in the abc statement. The poor unfortunate freedman has found o perhaps, intnitively, that the valno of his cotton enhanced by manufacture, and commands a pr he can never hope to obtaiu for it in its cm original condition. Thus he has set an example to the capital, i telligence and enterprise of his superiors, a practically illustrated the importance of a thet that has been worn well nigh thread-bare in discussion, (n other words, the negro shows his fingers what ho would do, had ho power, grandly develupo the rosonrcos of the State ; ai by works demonstrates his faith in tho proposiri so persistently urged, that when our peoplo bcR to manufacture, as well as produce, their gre staple, they will realizo a degree uf prosperity which we have yet kuown but the germ. ABTTFICTAL LEGS FOR CITIZENS OF THE STATE. Al the last session of the General Assembly, handsome appropriation waB placed at the iii posai of his Excellency, GOT. Tho modus operandi of obtaining a leg is as lu l.iwa : first, tb': applicant makes oath that ho i entitled to the same, and receives from ti.- Clet of the Court of his District/a certificate settw forth that fact. He is then measured according lo diagram and directions furnished lu Dr. Bur, an tho measurement is forwarded to the factory . Charleston. From this city, the order is sent 1 Rochester, New York, where the legs are turin ont in thorough. They are returned to Charle ton to be finished and fitted to the stumps of tl applicants. The latter are thou notified, and pc; milted to come to Charleston free of charge, tl railroads having generous extended this courte? to both thc State sod individual, tho safeguard being the presentation of the certificate of th Clerk of the Court. They are detained in thc cit perhaps one day, and then, if they choose, rctur to their homes, to bo quickly followed by a bani some looking imitation of tho missing menin, which, long ago said good bye to tho rc6t of th body in passive obedience to the Surgeon's knift We are informed that thus far, general satisfac tion has beeu given by Dr. BLT, and that thos who have become familiar with their, new loeomo tive attachment, are enabled to get over th ground with a speed, and to perform their dutic with a usefulness that strongly contrasts will their former mutilated condition. About ono log a day is completed at tho factor in this city, and the supply is fully equal to tin demand. Some two hundred applications have boen made up to the present tune, but the parties appear t< be awaiting the advent of cool weather before visit ing Charleston for the purpose of having tht mechanism adjusted. GENERAL SICKLES' REMOVAL is lamented by tb? Anderson intelligence!-, thc Newberry Herald, and the Greenville Enterprtat, The last named pa pei says : " It ia a little remarkable that tho effort ti protect a citizen of his military district troni pre? sent oppression and ruin has resulted in ousting the general from his commaud. Wo are pleased to see, however, that the Order Number 10 re? mains in torco, so lar as the State Courts are con? cerned, and prevents the present ruin of tho State by the multitudinous snits and judgments im? pending over the people for debts for negroes, aud debts contracted during the war, and old debts due upon the faith of property which hus been an? nihilated by the resulta of the war."' "We oee our worthy contemporary ol the Charles? ton Cmirier, is inclined to rejoice in the hope of removing Stay orders, and consequently cf open? ing the floodgates of sheriff sales in the present horrible depression in financial matters. Wo main? tain that tho nnstayed operation and enforcement oi tue old debtor and creditor laws of South Caro? lina at this time, would be most a merciless and oppressive tiling; in its imm?diate effects more ruinous to the coiuilry than STEPHENS' mild con? fiscation. It i-. a little strange that there is ?-0 many men anxious to have sheriff '-ales operating in all cases, auder all circumsfr.nce^, ntterlj opposed to any relief laws or order, while they are crying out against confiscation and^isfran ehisenunt. If the debtor has a wife who has inherited a little propert) or a farm, our merciless South Carolina law drives lier from that, and will leave her and her children to starve for the misfortunes of her husband, perhaps to pav a securitv debt or perchance a debt for an emancipated negro.
