A? a commercial port few cities .^an compete with Charleston, as ber facili? ties for }>ot? the shipping and inland transporta? tion are amply sufficient for the trade. The differ? ent Unes of coast steamers are no? crowded to their utmost capacity, with freights trom Balti? more, New York and Boston. The trade with the former city has been greatly improved, and the vessels are now turing the busy season, frequently compelled to refuse freights, their complements being full. Latterly theee vessels have been I crowded with Western freights, and have brought goods to this city destined for Augusta, Athens, Atlanta and different places in Western and South? western Georgia, and Alabama. This lutlux of goods has iuiuaed some Ufe iu certain circles and the music ot the loaded drays has been heard at ali hours. The merchandise is sent, to the differ? ent depots, as soon as discharged from the vessel and the wharves at this time are a ?cene of bustlo, Ufe and activity. Ai a recent arrival of the Fa'con, from Baltimore, and the Champion, from New York, over four hundred dray loads of tfooos were taken to the different depots. Certain totalities aro devoted ex? clusively to this traffic, and during the busy son tin' untiring voice of the auctioneer may be heard crying hie goods ami knocking them down to the bigliest bidder. Voulue lianne was at ono time the chosen resort of theso merchants, but the war and the fires have destroyed many of the oki landmarks, and the former occupants of this Bange arc now scattered along East Bay, Broad and Meeting streets. The advantages presented by this business to both the seller and purchaser are numerous, as the goods are offered to the highest bidder, and are sold at their intrinsic mar? ket value. A majority of the merchants on Hast Bay, have undertaken the Auction and Commission business, in addition to their usual employment!, and large sales of groceries, dry goods, roil estate, Ac, are not unusual on this and other thoroughfares. The old Post Office has long boen the favorite stand for the auctioneer, and though this business has in common with other branches suffered du? ring tho Summer. The Fall trade will soon create some activity among the gentlemen of tho ham? mer and the exchange again resound with the sound of going, going, gone. The old poBtoffioe, though so popular amoug the irater y, is now used almost exclusively by tho real estate brokers, tho large wholesale auction house? makiug their sales either in front of their establishments or upon the spot where the goods are stored. Vendue Range and East Bay were long tho favorite haunts for this trade, but the march of progress has been upward and onward, and the large stores on Mooting, Ilayiie and Hasel streets are now occupied by many of the auction and commission merchants, who are thus enabled to offer tho goods to both country and city pur? chasers. The arrival of a few merchants has stimu kted evory branch of trade, and tho auction houses aro among tho first to offer attractions to their customers. Large consignments ot goods of differ? ent descriptions have been received, and scarcely a day passes without a notice of some prominent sale. As these storos aro' well supplied with every aiticlo needed in this market they offor rare in? ducements to purchasers, and the country oner chants should embrace this opportuntly to add to their stocks. Alderman WILLIS requested an l received further time in which to make a report on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad.
