The impression that a large crop of cotton will
be made is gaining ground, Trat the reports
from all parts of the South do not warrant it.
We have before us, toconnts from Texas, Louisi?
ana and Mississippi, which art 'rory gloomy.
The Now Orleans Picayune publishes a letter
from a gentleman every way reliable, who has
been on I visit to his plantation m Texas. Hear?
ing gloomy accounts he would not behove them

Cotton, and the worm will still do some damage.
We hope, however, that tho fears on this account,
wm prove groundless. In Southwestern Georgia,

on the Cotton has been very injurious.
It is well enough for the country to know these
things. The crop m Alabama will be better than
iastyear, and the oom crop certainly is satisfac?

whole, the prospect for profit to the Ahearne
planter is good. His storehouses are filled with
oom wheat, is abundant, and the prices of meat,
we hope, will materially decline in the next six
weeks. Those who sell cotton early generally

The sales are 17,000 bushels at $2 30 for amber state
$207 for good white Californian; $2 31 for amber Ken

Oats opened quite firm, but after the settlement of
I contracts maturing to-day, lower prices were accepted,
the market closing flat
The salea and resales for tho settlement of contracta
are 166,000 bushels Ohio at 75a80c, closing at 75a77c per
cargo; old Western at C9a70c; and Southern at 55a72c.
Corn is excited, quite active, and much higher. The
demand is chiefly speculative.
The sales are 175,000 bushels damp and unsound at
$107;"'al 134; Western mixed at $1 14al 17; in store,
SI liai 174; afloat and VOIT choice high mixed at 117H
PROVISIONS- Pork is held with much firmness, but
there .a very little doing. The eales arc 100 bbls moss at
$23 25 cash, and 500 bbls do at S 23 25 regular. The clos?
ing cash price for lots ot 250 bbls and upward at $23 20.
Beef remains dull at about previous figures.
Sales of 50 bbls, l i lots, at $17a25 for plain mess, and

Beet hams are neglected and nominal in the absence of
sales.
Cut meats are firm and in very good demand. Sales
of 60,000 pounds dry salted shoulders in bulk, city

Bacon is steady but quiet. Sales of 150 boxes ice
cured, long clear and Stetford, on private terms, and
