MARE'S NEST.-The Mercury, in its issuo of yes? terday, in speaking of a now United States flag recently raised at the Citadel, says: "The flag has twenty-six of its stars in a diamond cluster in the centre of the Union, and the ten others disposed around the border of the Union, two in each cor? ner and one in the centre of the bottom border of the Union, and one in the centre of the top border of the Union. Whether intentionally or not, this flag is emblematic, so far as it separates ton of tho stars from the remaining twenty-six." It is to be remarked that American flags were manufactured with the stars similarly disposed before the war. The Mercury, usually so accurate, is here at fault. This, however, is excusable, when all the circumstances in the caso are con? sidered. MUSIC ON THE BATTERY.-MB. EDITOR: Since the occupation of this city by the United States troops there is nothing that has contributed more to the happiness of the people than the concerts on the Battery Saturday afternoons: lately we have been deprived of them, understanding the instruments bave been sent North, and in whose' stead, we aro to receive new ones. The band, we behove, pos? sess a complete set of stringed instruments. Will not our obliging Post Commandant substitute them for the others, so that we can enjoy a concert on Ute Battery this afternoon ? I think I am safe in predicting he will let the people come 1 MUSIC FOR MANY. RELIGIOUS NOTICE.-Mr. Editor: The congre? gation of the Cathedral Chapel and many visitors were deeply impressed and instructed OD last Sunday by the eloquent discourse of Rev. W. F. CLARE, S. J., of Baltimore. So deep was the impression, and so great the satisfaction, that entreaties, numerous and ur? gent, are continually made, requesting him to fa? vor the congregation and many friends, of all classes, with another discourse. The good Father, thoa besieged, had no alterna? tive, and bas kindly consented. He will, therefore, preach to-morrow, August the 25th, at High Mass, in tho Cathedral Chapel, at IO* o'clock. As usual, the pewholders w.'U be accommodating. All who are willing to come are welcome. B. NATURALIZED FOREIGNERS.-As there appears to be an erroneous impression abroad among our adopted citizens of foreign birth, that their right to register has been questioned, we have been re? quested by a member of one of the Boards of Re? gistration in this city to state that, as far as he knew, no suet, objection has ever been made: certainly there was no desire or disposition to pre? vent foreign citizens from voting. There ia not the shadow of any authority for such a cons tr action of tho oath in any of the Re? construction Acts, and we feel inclined, therefore, to believe that this rumor is altogether incorrect. We hope that none of oar fellow-citizens of foreign birth will allow this or any other consideration to prevent them from registering. Let them not de? lay too long; procrastination is always dangerous when brought in relation with duty. ALONO THE NORTHEASTERN RAILROAD.-Going up the road on Wednesday, we were surprised at the large number of white female passengers, nati ve and to the manor born, picked up all along the road between the river and Kingstroe. It was soon explained. This was ration day. Every one of these candidates for United States bounty brough; a bag, and in this bag took away corn and ' bacon, very much pleased at the goodness of their Uncle Samuel. Tho conductor charged no fare to those poor people, either going or coming. The pensioners were all widows and orphans of Con? federate soldiers-at least they all claimed to hold ?nob relations to our late soldiery. There were no negroes among the distributees of the ele mosynary fund on Wednesday, from which we infer that they "draw" on a separate day. Cotton is* looking np everywhere, and if lrost will hold off to a late period, we shall have an abundance of our favorite staple. The corn along this road is not so fine, though excellent on some plantations. THE GALAXY.-We have just received the Sep? tember number of this excellent Monthly. Not baring had time yet to read it, we take the follow? ing notice from the Evening Post of Wednesday : "Steven Lawrence, Yeo'nan," and "Waiting for the Verdict," are continued in the September Galaxy. One of the most noticeable contribu? tions, in some respects, is WALT WHITMAN'S "Carol of Harvest, for 1867." Neither verse nor prose, it yet has much of real poetry in its rugged aud careless stanzas, and is, to a good degree, "A song with the smell cf sun-dried hay, when the n' ru? ble pitchers handle the pitchiork; A song tasting of new wheat, and of fresh-husked maixe.'' Scholars and old school-boys will read with in? terest the "Reminiscences of Dr. ANTHON," the writer of which, although very friendly, does not ?pare some o* the peculiarities of the late learned professor. We extract a few passages of bio? graphical value : "Facing the table was one of Anthon's favorite ideas, lt consisted in hav ing a table and a chair placed in the middle of the room, and upon tho table a fresh, unmarked copy of the author, whether Greek or Latin, whom the class was then read'ng. The scholars were then summoned to this table in turn, to translate and be examined upon portions of tho day'B lesson. Tho advantage of this mechanism was to deprive tho boy under examination of all assistance from his neighbors, and to cut off the resort to interlinear transla? tions, marginal notes, and various other dovicos for getting unfair credit, in use among students. . . . True, the laugh was generally at some one's expense, and was 'not always kind ; but as a stimulus to exertion, the ridicule unsparingly heaped upon tho victim was most effectual."
