MONDAY MORNING, AUGUST 12, 1867. LOCAL. MATTERS. Jos WOM.-We have now completed our office so aa to execute, in the shortest possible time ATT. KINDS OP JOB WORK, and we most re? spectfully ask tho patronage of our friends. Post Office Notice. POST OFFICE, ) CHARLESTON, a C., July G, 1867. j* After to-day the maila for Northeastern Railroad will close at 8 o'clock A.M., and to-day and after? wards they are expected to roach the Railroad "Station" at 2:30 o'clock P.M., and to bo ready for delivery at this office at 3:30 o'clock P.M., except on Sunday, when the hour will be from C P.M. to 7 P.M., until farther notice. ' STANLEY G. TROTT, P. M. PoeTomaE NOTICE.-An evening mail for Augus? ta and Savannah, and for distribution beyond those offices, will close daily at the Postoffice at half-past 6 o'clock. THE PILOTAGE QUESTION.-The points in this case have been folly explained, but the controver? sy h as now assumed a new phase. An order has been issued from Headquarters directing the plaintiffs to refrain from any action in the case, bat await farther orders on the subject. In the meantime we understand the question is under advisement and will be referred to Washington. CORONER'S INQUEST.-Coroner WHITING was no? tified on Saturday that the body of a negro boy, about seventeen years of age, was lying on the sidewalk of Meeting street, near the Battery. The boy waa quito dead when found, although it ap? peared that he had left his employer's premises only a few minutes beforejtho occurrence appa? rently well and cheerful. After an examination into the circumstances, the Jury retuTLed a ver? dict of death from congestion of tho brain. , A PUTT TO THE WEED.-There is no surer sign of retaining prosperity than the increase of stores in the business sections, and especially when these establishments are both useful and ornamental. Messrs. FKHBBNBAOH & SCHUB have opened at No. 129 Meeting street, a neat and tasty segar stand, where the lovers of the weed can be accommo? dated to the best brands in the market. Mr. ?EflBEKBASfr ig au old hand at the bellows-to the manner born-and will soon make bis new stand equal to others. EDITORIAL RETTREMENT.-Mr. D. B. MCCEEIOHT, who has for some time been connected with the editorial department of the Winnsboro' Nevsa and Herald, announced in the last issue that his asso? ciation with that paper was dissolved. Mr. MC? CEEIOHT is a victim of a pulmonary disease, and l?a failing health required that he should have some relaxation. As an old friend and acquaint? ance, we regret his retirement from his profession? al labors, and trust that time and care will soon restore bia wonted vigor, and that he will resume his seat on the tripod at an early day. JEWELRY.-We refer to the advertisement of Mr. JAS. ALLAH, in another column. Mr. A has large? ly increased his stock by arrivals from New York, andie now prepared to offer his numerous cus? tomers a full assortment of jewelry and the va? rious kniok-naeks, both useful and ornamental, that are to be found in a well conducted establish? ment. Mr. ALLAN has endeavored to make bis stand at Na 807 King street perfect in all of its details. Ee has secured the services of able workmen, and ia prepared to execute ah orders that may be confided to bim. This store is one of the attractive features of King street, and is con? ducted by Mr. ALLAN upon principles that will in? sure success. t Q THE STREET CAB ACCIDENT-VERDICT OF THE CORONER'S JUEY.-Coroner WHTTDXQ impanelled a * jury on Saturday morning, od after viewing the body of the deceased, adjourned them to meet at bis.office at 12 M. The testimony of the conduc? tor; driver and several of the passengers was taken, but no new features were elicited, and the following verdict was agreed to unanimously : We find that the deceased, William Miller, came to his death by injuries received while endeavor? ing to jump from Street Car Na 36, and that, in the opinion of this Jury, the driver and conductor are not blamable, no evidence being given of re? missness of duty on their part. COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY.-The following from the Petersburg Express ia of interest to our com? munity, as several of these counterfeits have boen detected in this city. They are of different denomi? nations: , First, a new and dangeroua two-dollar greenback, well executed, and calculated to deceive. Ex? amine all two's care folly, especially new bills of that denomination. Also, one-dollar greenbacks, close imitation, bat the engraving ia ooaree, especially the head of CHASE, which differs from the genuine in the eyes and mouth, but more particularly in the nose, which ia of an entirely diff?rent type. Five-dollar greenbacks. The words "United gtates," compared with the original, have scratchy appearance. In general appearance, pa? per and printing, they are well calculated to de? ceive. , DETENTION OF A FOREIGN VESSEL.-Tho Norwe? gian bark EjelleslacU, Capt. WENGE, arrived here some time back from Newport, England, with a cargo of railroad iron. Captain W. not being in? formed aa to the law of Congress requiring foreign vessels to have their manifests in proper form pre? vious to entering a port of the United States, came into thia harbor without having that paper exec n t ' ed aa the law requires, and was thereby subjected to a fine of five hundred dollars or lees. Mr. WITTE, the Consul for Sweden and Norway, thinking that the Captain made the omission innocently, laid the case before the Ambassador of Sweden and Norway* ot Washington, who, after an interview with the Hon. Secretary of the Treasury, obtained a remission of the fine. Through some misappre? hension of the officials here, wa learn that the bark was detained a day or two after she waa ready for sea before she could clear through the Custom Souse for Liverpool, for which port she hod token on board a cargo of cotton and naval stores. WEST BROAD AND RUTLEDGE PROMENADE.- Every one does not five within an agreeable jaunt of the Battery, hence the necessity of seeking other pointa for recreation and refreshmont in these "p?ping hot" times nearer their place3 of residence, which is done in no stinted degree. The points .sought are generally along the river, where, after the fiery day-god has sunk to rest behind the west? ern clouds, the breezes float, filled with healing and health "in their wings." One of these popu? lar resorts ia the Promenade, debouching from West Broad, through Rutledge and np Beaufoin .streets. There is not a fair afternoon that troops cf the neighboring little and larger ones may .not be seen- walking on the margin of the the pond, which compasses just sufficient of thc element to make it lake-like iu physique, if not in other Italian essentials. And not only the blithe and happy heart of childhood invigorates and re? vividas thereat, but "grown ap" ladies and gentle? men-mam'seues and their beaux-go thither to catch the pure, free air, as it fpercolates the pre? cinct and renders it enchantingly dc light ful. What ablessing it is that those who aro cir- | cumstanced so os to prevent visits to the Battery, Cf these clear, unruffled moonlight nights and balmy afternoons, have such rosorts, where they can restore weared nature and revitalize the taxed energies, and recuperate the spirits pressed by care and anxiety incident to these unpropitious timos. Only those who aro beneficiaries of these bless? ings can properly appreoiat3 them; still, that is no reason why a benefit bestowed in port should not he duly recognized in whole, when it is generally advantageous to the community of humanity. But we digressed, and must beg to call the early at? tention of our City Fathers to thc condition of tho Promenade in question. There aro somo repairs to the wooden break-water and moro particularly to the pedestrian path, which, wo assure you, Mr. Inspector and gentlemen of Council, are absolutely and immediately needed, and .we ^sincerely hope, as a hygienic policy, you will not overlook them, even though tho munici? pal exchequer is low. Reflect how much pleasure ia derived from this delightful and healthful re? sort, and compare it with the expenso of a little extra curbing and filling, and yon will at once, wo feel flattered, see that tho repair wo bespeak for the promenaders is not an unnecessary au J need? less expense. Ere long, we trust, those who enjoy the promenade in its dilapidated condition, will rejoice at its trans-mogriflcation into something worth while visiting, and, last and not the least, enable alt, .?big ones" and ''littlo ones," to walk and gambol the entire length without fear of Budden precipitation into a cavity, which is rather dangerous to the limbs, if not life itself. REGISTRATION.-Registration commences in tho different precincts to-day, and it is fair to presume that the applicants for citizenship viii be uumer ! oas, particularly among tho colored class. The j orders have boen before the public for some time, and the community should be now thoroughly ' posted regarding their status. That it is the duty of every man to register, few will dispute. Let them first qualify as voters, and then use the privilege according to their ideas of what is the right course _to pursue. The colored population will register to a man, and the whites should not stand aloof. We trust that tho first day's report will show that they are actuated by a spirit that will cause them to flock to the polls and enroll their named as citizens, ready and willing to aid in the work of reconstruction. MATOB'S COUBT.-One Grant (colored), remem? bering that he was .the namesake of a warrior, created some excitement by smiting tho wife of his bosom on one cheek, but sho was not thorough in her belief, and returned the blow with interest. A nico family jar was interrupted by the peace miters, and tho son of Mars was charged $20 for hid exhibition of tho manly art. Two flghtists, whose blood was at fever hoat, indulged in a cheerful mill for a pastime. The noble pair were somewhat high from carrying an extra load of bad corn juice, but their mercury fell at the announcement from the throne of jus? tice that clubs wero trumps, and the ante was a V. I They paid and fled, thinking that this world was [ but a fleeting show for man's delusion given. UWITED STATES DIBTBIOT CO CET DI GBEENVTLLE. -The Greenville papers furnish the following synopsis of tho proceedings of i h is Court : On Tuesday morning the Court was regularly opened, and business commenced. Tho charge of his Honor was earnest, sensible and practicable. He expressed his gratification at tho fact that he could unhesitatingly and confidently entrust the administration of justice to a jury drawn without distinction from the people. He also spoke of the condition of the country, and expressed the fer vont hope and Bincere belief that the prosperity of | the South would soon be restored. On no occasion in the history of the Court at Greenville, beforo the war, have we had a more orderly or so largo an attendance of people. Dis? trict Attorney COBBIN, and several lawyers from other Districts, are in attendance on the Court. All tho junior members of our bar, and the mem bora of the bar from other Districts, aro being admitted to practice in the Court, either upon motion or petition. The older lawyers wore ad? mitted years ago. The following gentlemen were admitted on mo? tion: W. H. PEBBT, J. P. MOOEE and J. J. NOBTON. And the following on examination: J. M. ADAMS, JAMES BIRNIE, W. E. EABLE, J. C. MILLS, EDWARD '. STOKES and G. G. WELLS. It is expected the Court will continue several weeks. There are many indictments for viola? tions of the revenue laws, chiefly connected with whiskey. Two assessors, not natives of the State, are indicted. There was a true bill for murder found on Tuesday against a negro. PANIC STBTJCK BEAUTY.-It is a terrible shock to a charming woman-indeed, to any woman-to find that her teeth are .'beginning to go." Never will any human being who uses the fragrant Sozo dont, while the teeth are still sound, make that discovery. Even when decay has commenced, it immediately stops its progress. 1 H. H. C., 1 March L 18G7. j Mears. Little <?. Marshall : GENTLEMEN : I used, daring the past season, one ot "Ingersoll's Portable Cotton Presses," purchased of you last september. I have always been prejudiced in favor of the "Screw Press," and nothing but dire necessity in? duced mo to try any other. I take pleasure, however, in adding my^estimony in favor of its entire adaptation to tho wants ot a colton plantation. It has surpassed my most sanguine expectations. I have packed with but two hands, yet I prefer four-two at each lever. My bales all weighed over 600 lbs. Tho first lot I sent to market averaged 662 Its. My impression is that 600 lbs. is about the capacity of the Press, and a greater number of pounds subject the foilow-block to too much risk, un? less the sides of tho cotton box was increased. It would add greatly to the value of tho Press if the cotton box was ten inches longer. In haste, I am, very respectfully, Your obedient servant, Ac, B. W. LAWTON. P. S. I took my Press down and carried it some four aulles to pack tho crop of a neighbor, who foiled t> have a "Screw" built; he was so much pleased that he has determined to abandon the "Screw" and purchase "In? gersoll's Press." B. W. L. OFFICE OF KINO'S MOUNTAIN It A imo AD CO?TANT, 1 YOBEVXLLE, S. 0., April 15, 1867. } GENTLEMEN : I have just received your letter ot Feb? ruary 14th-upon my return to this place, alter an ab? sence of two months-and this reply may be too lato for your "Descriptive Circular of Ingersoll's Cotton Press." The Press I used in packing my cotton last year werk ed admirably, packing, with ease from 600 to 625 lbs. With good active hands to work lt, I am satisfied that from eighteen to twenty bales might readily bc packe d in a day. This Press combines the advantages of lightness, and consequent portability and simplicity (being easily man? aged by .nny one of ordinary intelligence). Great com? pressing t orco, with little motive. power, and "last, but not least," it is worked entirely by band, thus saving for the nunn horses the hatjd labor imposed upon them by the use of tho ordinary "Screw."
