TUESDAY MOBNLNG, AUGUST 6, 1867. LOCAL MATTERS. JOB WOES.-We havo now completed our office 80 as to execute, in the shortest possible timo AU, KINDS OF JOB WOBK, and wo most re? spectfully ask the patronage of our friends. Post Office Notice. POST OFFICE, ) CHARLESTON, 8. C., July 6,1807. ) After to-day tho mails for Northeastern Railroad will close at 8 o'clock A.M., and to-day and after? wards they are expected to reach tho Railroad "Station" at 2:30 o'clock P.M., and to bo ready for deliver)- at this office at 3:30 o'clock P.M., except on Sunday, when the hour will be from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M., until further notice. STANLEY G. TROTT, P. M. POSTOFFICE NOTICE.-An evening mail for Augus? ta and Savannah, and for distribution beyond tiioso offices, will close daily at the Postoffice at half-past 6 o'clock. WK would call the attention of those interested to the advertisement of Messrs JEFFORDS & Co., No. 30 Vendue Bango, by which it will ba seen that they have on band, and are constantly receiving large quantities of choice sides, shoulders, hams, 4c., which they offer for salo low. All in want of these articles would do well to give them a call. THE BEJWETTSVTLLE JOURNAL.-We had the pleasure, yesterday evening, of a visit 'from Mr. LITTLE, the editor of the Bennettsville Journal. He will remain in tho city several days, on busi? ness connected with his paper. Marlboro' Dis? trict will have cotton this fall and will want goods, and our merchants will consult their interests by ' advertising in the Journal. Verbum sap. CORRECTION_In our notice of the Memphis Life Insurance Company in yesterday's issue, by some error, the agency in this city was assigned to Mr. KAVEXEL, when it should have been Mr Wit, PANNELL. Mr. P. has worked faithfully for the interests of the Company, and we willingly re? store the laurels that ho was deprived, of by a typographical mistake. WE HAVE received: a pamphlet, printed at the Ar? gus Office, Wades boro', N. C., which, upon examina? tion, we find to be the Catalogne of the Officers and Students of Carolina Female College, Ansons ville, N. C., Session 1866-7. This, institution is under the charge of tho South Carolina Conference of the M. E., Church South. The Faculty is com ESfc?d of JL E. BLAKSENSHIP, Esq., President; WM. T. SMITH, Esq., Professor of Belles Letters, Ad? junct Professor of Mathematics, and Teacher of I *the Higher English Branches; besides teachers of | music, drawing, painting, etc., etc. This pamphlet is printed entirely on North Carolina paper, as we are informed hy the kind friend who sent it to us. The paper is of good color and excellent texture. THE GLOBS HOTEL.-Mr. P. METTZLEB, the host of the Globe, celebrated the reopening of his establishment yesterday by a free lunoh, and co? pious libations were drank by the guests to tho future prosperity of the Globe. Mr. METTZLEB has not suffered from forced inactivity, for he em? braced the opportunity to improve his houso, and has now far more pleasures to offer his guests than before Order No. 32 was published. A fine ten-pin alley has been added to the building, and all the paraphernalia usually to be found in a well con? ducted hotel The Globe is a modest building, but one admirably suited for those who like to take their ease in their inn. It is frequented by our Teutonic fellow-citizens, who are good judges of such matters, and whose commendation can be relied on. T "VEEY MUCH MARRIED. "-In THE NEWS of Sat? urday we printed a paragraph, clipped from the Bichmond Dispatch, about theetate of the matri? monial market during the month of July in that city. The credit was accidentally omitted, and tho paragraph thus seemed to have reference to this city. The "Local" of tho Mercury appears to think there is an excellent joke somewhere con? nected with this matrimonial newspaper blunder. If he can derive any pleasure from the contempla? tion of this very funny circumstance, wc feel high? ly flattered at having been permitted, though un? wittingly, to make him laugh. When tho Mercury made a Bimilar blunder last week about "Canaan'' (dipping a paragraph from an Augusta paper with? out giving credit), we noticed the mistake, but it did not strike us as being funny at all. "People who live in glass houses," etc. LITHOGRAPH OP THE CHARLESTON HOTEL. Among the public buildings of Charleston there are few that present a moro imposing front than the Charleston Hotel. The spacious piazzas and immense columns add to tho appearance of the building, and have caused it to bo justly con? sidered a fine specimen of architectural beauty. The proprietors have recently hal a drawing of the Hotel taken by Mr. C. L WALSER, which hos been lithographed by Mr. Jos. WALEEB, and will be used as a card for tho Hotel. The workman? ship in both instances has been perfect, as every feature in the building has been preserved, and a picture produced that will be an ornament to any business establishment. There are few advertise? ments that would attract the eye sooner than tho picture in question, and we trust it will bo tho means of inducing strangers to visit our city during the fall and winter. ST. MICHAEL'S STEEPLE.-For some days the workmen have been busy on tho outside ol tho steeple, near the ball, and their movements havo excited some interest, as it was rumored that the ball waa to be regilded and other changes made in the appearance of the steeple. As is frequently the case, the tales of Dame Rumor have proved in this instance to be incorrect, and though the church may need the repairs, it is impossible, in the present state of the finances, to have them made, and the community will have to endure the rusty appearance of the steeple until better times come, when the state of the exchequer will admit of the expense. The recent ascent of the work? men waa only for the purpose of repairing the roof which, for some cause, leaked near tho pigeon holds, and we are sorry, if in stating theso facts we have destroyed any air castles that have been built upon so slight a foundation. CH?ECH ETIQUETTE.-The following is said to be the lateat church etiquette, and though the manual waa intended for places which are more the resort of fashionables than Charleston, the manceuvro is easily learned, and can be practised in any of our churches with great eclat: Let the lady advance ono pace beyond the door of the pew ste wishes to enter, half about face and salute. The pew must then bo vacated by such gentlemen at. are in it by flank movement. Tho squad should rise simultaneously when tho lady presents herself and face by the right flank, thou deploy into the aisle, tho head man facing thc lady, and the rest walking to his right aud rear, the direction of his halt being changed by a right countermarch, and forming again into lino up and down the aisle, still faced by tho right flank. The lady, when tho coast is clear, completes her salute and advances to her position in the pew. Thc gentlemen brook off by files from the rear, and re? sume their places. Great care should be taken, of course, by other parties not to enter the aisle when this evolution is in progress until it is com? pleted. A FALL FROM GRACE.-Among the attaches of the city few rank higher than the Buzzard. From the remote ages this uncanny bird has been held sacred, and awarded a degree of reverouce second only to that given the city scavengers. Although the Buzzard has no place on our coat of arms, it will occupy a position on the scroll of fame second only to the Ibis of Egypt, or the Pelican of Louis? iana a. It boars a charmed Ufe, and, though not a pleasant companion, it is seldom interfered with, for, by some strange freak, while tho head of a human being is only valued at $2, that of a Buzzard comm iuds the sum of $5, and woo to tho unlucky wight who is tempto d to slay tho Plutonian bird. Fortunately, for the peaco of mankind, tho Buz? zard is a melancholy bird ; it keeps aloof, and is seldom Been but in the neighborhood of tho mar? ket and butcher pens, or perched upon some chimney top, viewing the landscape! o'er, and meditating on its bist meal. But buzzards aro not immaculate ; thoy aro liablo to tho vices that beset other bipeds, and ono of the fraternity so far forgot what was duo a city official as to become in? toxicated. To add to his disgrace, ho chose Sun? day for the unhallowed deed, and Hayno street as the arena for his dr?nkon frolics. " Ho went in with a perfect abandon, and evidently mistook himself for a lark. We left whilo he was vainly endeavoring to soar aloft ; but if Buzzards have feelings lite human beings and tho inebriate should ba asked to repeat the doso, ho would Mus wer like "Poe's Baven," Nevermore i EXAMINATION OF BET. DB. MXZB'B SCHOOL.-The examination of this school, and tho distribution ol prizes, takes place this morning at the Odd Fel? low's Hall, corner of King and Liberty streets, Parents, patrons, and the public generally, are in? vited to attend. MAXOB'S COUBT, August 5.-Tho excitement ol politics has taken tho placo of other amusements, and tho casos before the Mayor's Court are few and far between. Only a fow hardened sinners an? swered to roll call, who could not forget that Sun? day was a holiday, and consequently went in for s bender. Ono of theso was a boy in blue, who invested a few dimes in somo bottled lightning:, which had the effect of making him decidedly light headed Feeling in a gay and festivo humor he roamed about until he encountered a harbor's post. Some? thing in the appearance of tho colors struck him as familiar and ho commenced apostrophizing them in eloqpont strains and calling for assistance to unfurl the flag, illz noiso soon brought rein? forcements, who tore him from his loved emblem and carried him, a struggling captivo, to the Guard House. His barber-ous effort was explained to him and ho was sent to the Provost Marshal, who will keep him botter posted for a short time. Ono BHOWN, who was by somo strange freak also white, though no'relation to old JOHN, whose soul is marching on, put himself gently outside of a few anti-scorbutic drops, but they proved to bo too strong for bis system, and he hid himself and his woes in a gutter. BYEON said truly that the "Devil is in the moon for mischief," for sbo shono bright? ly on the muddy slumberer, and attracted the at? tention of a wandering star, a night errant, who, in accor .'ance with his vow, took the strangor in. He was charged $5 merely to show bim that the "quality of mercy was not strained." A pleasant young man, who was in the habit Of smiling with his acquaintances, went to a tavern one night, and drinking too much rum, brandy and such, he soon got exceedingly tight. This being his normal condition, ho made himself thoroughly at home-ao much so that he was roquos?cd to leave the establishment; but n^t being in an ac? commodating mood ho declined, and tried to clean ont things himself. The perlico were attracsed by the row, and carried tho mild-mannered yoong man to a quiet spot, where he had an opportunity of meditating on tho snake in tho glass. A man who went down to the sea in ships came on shore and got half sea's over, that making him feel lively he took a position on the Bay and called on some imaginary beings to "row the boat gently down the stream,v but was astonished to find him? self tacked to a strange craft and carried to a new dook- Ho was hauled in and after the necessary repairs, was turned out joyfully singing "a life on tho ocean wave." Wurra WITNESSES.-The mouth of the man who purifies his tooth with SOZODONT is a witnoss box, and every time be opens it two rows of gleaming wHueesea testify to its beautifying properties. Every living body, as well as refuse animal and vegetable matter, emits unwholesome vapors, and in crowded cities and the dense assemblages which busi? ness and pleasure call together, thc clements of disease ire evolved. Tho pressure upon every vital organ is never so great as in the second and third months of sum? mer, and common sense teaches us that these organs re? quire to be reinforced to meet it We hold our Uves, so to speak, on a repairing lease, and his is tho season when the process of dilapidaton is most -apid, and repairs are most required. Therefore, build ip, prop up and sustain the powers of nature with that nighty vegetable r?cup?rant, HOSTETTER'S RITTERS. Se who takes it may be said to clothe himself in sanitary rad, against which epidemic disease will hurl its poison >us shafts in vain. Thia is no gratuitous assertion, but i great medical fact, attested by twelve years' experience n every climate of the habitable globe.
