KINDS OP JOB WORK, and wo most re? spectfully ask tho patronage of our friends. Post Office Notice. POST OFFICE, I CHARLESTON, 8. C., July 6,1867. \ After to-day the mails for Northeastern Railroad wiD close at 8 o'clock A.M., and to-?ay aud after? wards they are expected to reach the Railroad "Station" at 2:30 o'clock P.M., and to bo ready for delivery at this office at 3:80 o'clock P.M., except on Sunday, when the hour will be from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M., until farther notice. STANLEY G. TROTT, P. M. POSTOFFICE NOTICE.- An evening mail for Augus? ta and Savannah, and for distribution beyond those offices, will cbse daily at the Post?nico at half-past 6 o'clock. PERSONAL.-Generals M. W. GABY and M. C. BUTLER arrived in this city on Saturday, and aro stopping at the Mills House. WE aro indebted toDMr. B. DOSCRER for late copies of Harper's Weekly, the Now York Inde? pendent, Round Table, etc. THE FARMER.-This sterling magazine, published by Messrs. ELLIOTT & SHIELDS, at Richmond, Va., is before ns. It contains the usual amount of use? ful miscellaneous reading, and will be lound an addition to every farmer's library. THE PRINTER'S CIRCULAR.-WO have received the July number of this magazine, published at Philadelphia. It is interesting principally to typos and parties engaged in affairs editorial, as it gives the prices of printing material, reports of | typographical conventions, and snoh matters. AT THE quarterly meeting of the Board of Di? rectors of the South Carolina Railroad Company, held on the 24th instant, Mr. Louis D. DESAUS SKBEwas unanimously elected a Director to fill the vacancy caused by tho death of the late Wai. C. DUKES. THE FARM AND GARDEN.-Wo have received the August number of this agricultural magazine, published at Clinton, S. C., by JAMES R. JACOBS & Co. It ;s, we believe, tho only agricultural news? paper in this State, and is replete with useful in? formation to both the farmer and housekeeper. The editor was long a resident of this city, and is a graduate of Charleston College, and we com? mend his journal to the public LABOE AUCTION SALE OF DEV GOODS.-We direct attention to the sale of dry goods which will take place this day at the store of Messrs. EPSTLN & ZEMANSKY, bf Messrs. MCKAY & CAMPBELL. These goods are the stock of a well known King street store, and comprise every article to be found in a well conducted establishment. Catalogues will be furnished, and purchasers will have every facility offered them which can assist their selections. SATURN- AND HIS RINGS.-Persons desirous of having a view of the planet Saturn and his circu? lar ornaments, can obtain it by turning a good perspective glass toward the Southern heavens. It is rather an interesting spectacle just now, as the flattened sides of the rings are presented to the observer at this point of the solar system, a circumstance that will not again occur for several years. On a clear night a good opera glass will disclose the rings. ALMOST A ROW-Yesterday afternoon, while the Mt. Pleasant ferry boat was coining to tho city, a fight .originated between some of the passengers, which culminated in a general engagement when the boat t ouch ed the wharf. The police were soon on the ground, bat in the melee were knocked down, and with difficulty succeeded in making any arrests. Two men, Germans, by name of WATER? MAN, were captured for this disorderly conduct, and will have a hearing before his Honor Mayor GAILLARD this morning. WM. J. NEVILLE, travelling agent for the Neva Era and Ladies' Home Gazette of Atlanta, tho Macon Tele? graph, Angosta Chronicle and Sentinel, LaGrange Reporter, Albany News, Griffin Herald, West Point Observer, and Am cri ina Republican, visits Charles? ton in tile interests of those papers, and they be? ing published in the richest cotton and cereal sec? tions of Georgia, oar merchants will find it a re? munerative investment to advertise with him. Coaling as he does, properly endorsed, we com? mend him to oar mercantile community. A CHANGE OF BASE.-The Daily Press, of Augus? ts, comes to ns the same in size and appearance, bot under a new name. It has been born again, and is now known aa tho National Republican, edited by D. G. COTTTNO, and published by the Georgia Printing Company, of which the former proprietor and publisher is the chief agent. In the notice of the chango the editor says: The name of the paper is a sufficient indication of its principles, as those principles are understood here-to wit, that to desire and advocate a return to the Union by the only means by which such a return can be effected, is to be Republican. Sub? ordinating au minor matters, I shall devote its columns to the great object now most prominently in view-the restoration of the Southern States tb their full participation in the Government of the Union, and the perpetuation of that Union when restored. Mr. E. H. POOHS, who first started the Press, succeeded, by his own exertions, in making it not only a popular, but a paying sheet, and as he is still connected with the paper, it is a fair pr?? somption that a change of name and principles will not affect its standing in Augusta as a first class daily. IMPORTANT TO RAILROAD MEN.-We copy from (he Savannah Republican an account of an inven? tion that is destined to revolutionize the manage? ment of railroads ; and as it is a matter of great importance, we give the piece in full ; "One of the moot valuable inventions pertaining to railroads that has over been made has recently been perfected by Mr. J. P. WHITE, a Savannah mechanic. The invention, for which he has secur? ed a patent, was conceived and perfected by him while guarding a railroad during the war. The main feature of the switch is that tho engineer has in his own hands the machinery by which ho can switch the train from the main to the outside track while the train is in mo? tion. It is adjusted by levers attached to the locomotive in front of the forward wheels, and so arranged as to be easily managed while tho cars are in fall motion. These levers coming in con? tact with others attached to tho switch itself, pro? duces the desired chango immediately. Caro, however, most be takon that tho lever opposite the desired course is used. As soon as the switch is moved from one side to tho other it locks by means of levers, and remains so until another change is effected. "From tho above it will be aeon that great time and expense is saved, as tho switches oau be man? aged by the engineer, thus abolishing switch tenders. This invention is also a *ure preventive of cars running off tho track, and there can bo no danger of loss of life by the neglect or carelessness of switch tenders. For railroads it is really inval? uable, and we cordially recommond it to our rail? road friends." MAYOR'S COURT.-Saturday proved to bo a dull day in legal matters, and little business was trans? acted by any of tho Courts. The Mayor's Court was apparently deserted, and the few caso3 on the docket only occupied a Bb ort time. The usual number of stray bovines were captured and pounded, bat the fondness of thc owners lor the lacteal fluid soon induced them tu edeet thc re? lease of their cattlo and send them again to tho burnt district, where th 3 j would stand a chance of being recaptured. Some colored youths to fortuno and to fame un? known, forgot the instructions of Dr. WATTS, and let their hands tear at each ot her's eyes. As if to add to tho enormity of tho offence, they fought under the very dropping of tho sanctuary, having chosen the vicinity of Grace Church as the spot for their little mid. As tho culprits evidently did not heed the admonitions of the Scripture, it was determin? ed to try tho terrors of tho law, and they wcro fined 15 each. Ono lucky fellow saw it and left, but the others did not como up to time, aud were jagged immediately. -o- . COURT or GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMMON PLEAS-Hon. F. J. MOSES presiding.-The Court was ocoupied up to the time of adjournment m hearing civil casos of no public interest. At 1 P. M. the Court was adjourned, bat soveral important motions will bo made before bia Honor Judge MOSES to-day. DISTRICT COURT-Hon. GEO. W. LOO AN presiding. ?--Saturday having been set apart as Sentence Day the following prisoners were brought to the Bar and received their sentences: * Christian James-Larceny. In sentencing the prisoners, Judge LOGAN repre? sented to them tho ouormity of their offences, and endeavored to show that the punishment was just recompense for their misdeeds. Some of tho the prisoners having committed flagrant breaches of peace and order, were sentenced to the peniten? tiary for a term of two years, while others received a punishment commensurate with tho crime. Hamilton Brown, who struck a white boy, was fined but $5, while another case, in which the person struck was a colored boy, was con lem ned to pay $50. In each of these cases the Judge was gov? erned iu his decision by the nature of tho offence, and the punishment was inflicted only after a patient hearing of tho matter before a jury. Tho District Court has effected great good sinco it has been established in this city, and has not only boon a terror to evil-doers, but has assisted many who wero wrongly accused. CHEAP CXOTHXKO.-Messrs. MACULLAB, WIL? LIAMS & Co, of the fashionable clothing depot at the corner of King and Hazel streets, have deter? mined to be up to the requirement of the times, and have consequently considerably reduced their prices. Sinco this store was established, it has gradually increased in popularity, until it is now known over tho entire State. The proprietors have recently lowcrod their tariff of prices considera? bly, and are now prepared to offer bargains that .cannot be equalled. Tho well-known refutation of tho storo was sufficient to ensuro custom, but they now present inducements that are almost irresistible. The stock is full and complete, and we advise all 'of our leaders who wish to improve the outer man, at s small expense, to pay Messrs. MA? CULLAB, WILLIAMS ? PARKER a visit and they can easily suit themselves. H. H. If you want cheat. For Convenience, Economy and Cheapness, thc greatest Labor diving Machine that can bc put on a Plantation. OPINIONS OF TUB PEOPLE I ALLENDALE, BARNWELL DISTRICT. 8. C., ) March 1, 1867. J Merni. Lilllrd- Marthall: GENTLEMEN : I used, during tho past season, ono of "Ingersoll's Portable Cotton Presses," purchased of you last september. I have always been piojlldlced in favor of tho "Screw Press," and nothing but dlro necessity in? duced mc to try any other. I take pleasure, however, in adding my testimony in favor of its entire adaptation to tho wants ot a cotton plantation. It hos surpassed my most sanguine expectations. I have packed with but two bands, yet I prefer four-two at each lover. My bales all weighed over ROO lbs. Thc first lot I sent to market averaged 662 los. My impression is that 500 lbs. is about thc capacity of the* Press, and a greater number of pounds subject tho foilow-block to too much risk, un? less tho sides of thc cotton box was increased. It would a. id greatly to the value of tho Press if thc cotton box was ton inches longer. In baste, I om, very respectfully, Your obedient servanr, Ac B. W. LAWTON. P. S. I took my I Tess down and carried it some fou. miles to pack the crop of a neighbor, who failed ti have a "Screw" built; ho was so much pleased that he has determined to abandon tho "Screw" and purchase "In? gersoll's Press." B. W. L. OFFICE OF KING'S MOUNTAIN RAILROAD COMTANT, 1 YORKVILLE, S. C., April 15. 1867. J GENTLEMEN : I have just received your letter ol Feb? ruary Uth-upon my return to this placo, after an ab? sence of two montlis-and this roply may be too late for your "Descriptive Circular of Ingersoll's Cotton Press." Tho Press I used in packing my cotton last year worked admirably, packing, with easo from 500 to 625 lbs. With good active hands to work it, I am satisfied that from eighteen to twenty bales might readily be packed in a day. This Pr ss combines the advantages of lightness, and consequent portubdity and simplicity (being easily man? aged bj any one of ordinary Intelligence). Groat com? pressing forco, w.th little motive power, and "last, but not least," it is worked entirely by hand, thus saving for the farm horses tlie haul labor imposed upon them by the use of tho ordinary "Screw." Respectfully, kc, yours, E. M. LAW. To LITTLE A MARSHALL, Charleston, S. C. For DESCRIPTIVE CIRCULAR and PRICE LIST address LITTLE & MARSHALL, Agents for the Ingersoll Cotton Press.
