THE YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION. - Tho delegates from this city to the National Convention of the Young Men's Christian Association, held at Montreal, returned on the last trip of tho Saragos? sa. They were hospitably received both at the diff?rent cities en route and at Montreal. Tho Convention met at Montreal on the 19th ult., in the Zion Congregational Church, and elected the fol? lowing officers: President, H. THANE MTT.T.TO, of Cincinnati. vice-Presidents, the Hon. F. CHAM? BERLAIN, Hartford; E. A. BURRELL, Milwaukee; A, E. BROWNE, Washington; CHABLIS YOUNO, Prince Edward's Island: F. JANES CLAXTON, Canada East; W. F. C. GREGORY, Petersburg, Ya. Secretaries, JAMES H. KELLOGG, Troy; JOHN A. DAWSON, Bos? ton; SILAS FARMER, Detroit; ALFRED LANDAU, Montrer \ In the evening a large meeting of wel? come was held in the American Presbyterian Oharoh? at which a number of addresses were made by Major General RUSSELL, E. G. B., Chair? man, Sir HBMBX HAVELOCK and Gov. POLLOCK, ol Pennsylvania, and others. Thursday, June 20th, was spent in listening to an elaborate essay on As? sociation Bible Cusses, written by Prof. DAWSON, vice-Chancellor of McGill University, Montreal, and a discussion upon it. The evening was devot? ed to a grand concert at the Victoria Skating Bink, where sacred music was sung by a chair of 150 singers, and an orchestra of 50, assisted by tho hands of one of the regiments stationed at Mon? treal. On Friday, the corresponding members from diff?rent States reported, and Mr. DAWSON'S essay was farther discussed. The remainder of the session was spent in trans? acting the business of the Association, in hearing the report* of committees, Ac. Over 000 dele? gates were present from all sections of the United States and Canada, and the greatest harmony and good fellowship prevailed. Arrangements have been made to send delegates to the World's Con? vention of Christian Associations, to be hold at Paris, August ll, 1867. BATSXBO or PUBLIC PLACES.-The heat of the summer has caused a revival of aquatic sports, and many, of the rising generation, who are almost am ph i harms in their natures, spend a greater por? tion of their time in the water. Unfortunately, this desire to keep cool has led many of them to infringe the city regulations, end though swim- I j ming in the dooks or other exposed portions of the 1( city is forbidden, when the water is once gained, they laugh at the laws and defy pursuit. This i ? habit of barbing from the wharves and other pub- 11 lie places has hexane a perfect nuisance to all per- | ( i in those neighborhoods, and stringent orders were issued by the authorities for the police to stop this amusement For some time the majesty of the law wes sufficient to preservo order, and a warning to the offenders waa all that was consider? ed necessary, bot ai last some of the boldest ven? tured to disobey, and the water was Boon thickly , covered with bobbing heads. This habit of pub- j ho bathing hos long been considered a j great evil, bot the efforts to stop it ? have so far been nugatory. It ' is not con? fined to "one section, but as both sides of ? the City are tabooed, the swimmers obstinately ] insist in infringing all mles of propriety and in- < dulge tn their sport almost openly. In former days n> was oonaidered perfectly lawful to use the mill ponda at the extreme ends of the rafts, and j while ibis privilege was allowed, the wharves and < other exposed portions were comparatively desor- | led. Tbs growth of the City has necessarily brought the swimmers into public notice, and the j West End was atoo compelled to appeal for pro- i lection. Deprived of their accustomed bathing ^ places, the swimmers have of late years been in t the habit of defying th* law, and notwithstanding c the frequent raids made upon them or their cloth- c jng, hi,ve persisted in their obnoxious practices. v Although the lower portion of the city has been tabooed, there are a number of places in the up? per wards which conk! be used with impunity, and ] if certain spots were set apart by the conned there i would be fe wei- violations of the law, and the ] wharves would be more easily kept dear than at pi ' i <- h Tn FIRST ANNTVEBSABT or niano** INDX- |! PENDEN CE or CHARLXSTON, S. C.-We have before ns a copy of the South Carolina and American General Gazette, dated Thursday, Jory 10,1777. It is volume 30, number 906, and was printed in Charlestown, by B? WELLS A SON, at tho old print, jng house, great stationery and book store. The quaint style and antiquated appearance of the pa per at once attract attention, bat it is chiefly n'a able because it contains an account of the first celebration of the 4th of Joly as a national anni? versary. The article is so interesting that we re? publish it entire, and oar readers can compare the sayings and doings, of ye olden time with those of the present day "Last Friday, Joly i, being the first anniversary oftbat memorable ?SRA, AMERICAN INDEPENDENCY, was ushered in with the ringing of bells and a general display of tho Ammioan colors on all tho .forts and shipping. The Charleston militia and artillery wera reviewed by his Excellency the President, his Honor the Vice-President, tho Hon? orable Members of the Privy Council, ftc. At 1 o'clock the great guns of the rti*?rmt forts (Fort* Moultrie beginning) were fired to the number of seventy-six, altading to the year 1776, when tho ihirteen United States emandpated themselves from the British yoko. An elegant entertainment was given at the Council Chamber by his Excel laney the President to such of the members of tho Legislature as were in town, to the clergy, civil and military officers; and a number of other gen? tlemen. After dinner, the following thirteen toasts -were given, each accompanied by thirteen dis 4 charges from the field pieces belonging to Captain GBIMBALL'S Artillery Company, viz: 1st. In the evening there were illuminations and fire? works and the whole happily concluded without ]esst accident or disturbance. In the same paper are several proclamations Irani his excellency Jiro? RUTLXDQB, the Governor of the State, which recall fordbly the stirring times through which we hate just passed. The Gazelle ,4 was one of the first papers printed in Charles? ton and its time stained columns contain many names that are familiar, and others who have all passed away in the nicety years interim between \ tit? lat celebration, of th? ito and to-day. Tn CITADEL, WO tindera tau d, ia to bo brilliantly illuminated this ovcning. A promenade concert will be given by the officers of the garrison, to which a number of our citizens have boen invited. Later in tho evening thero will bo a pyrotechnic display on the Green, which will make that spot the centro of attraction to the admiring orowd. FOE.- At 10 P. M., last evening, the alarm of fire brought out the engines, and the smoke issu? ing from tho paint and oil store of Mr. DAVID BBIQOS, on East Bay, near Elliott street, soon drew them to that spot. It was evidently the work of a.T. incendiary, as Officer LEVY, of the Detective force, had passed tho store but a fow minutos be foro the alarm. The fire was discovered in tho front of the building, near tho door, but tho promptness of tho firemon soon subdued the flames. Mr. BEIOOS was insured in TUPPER & LAKE'S insurance agencies, but the stock is only slightly injured. THE STREET Cass AND THE FOURTH.-Notwith? standing .tho application made, tho cars will not bo stopped on tho 4th, the Company believing tbat, as caterers to tho public, they wero compelled to run tho machine in spite of tho Declaration of In? dependence, GEORGE WASHINGTON, or any other man. It was 'considered by somo parties that to have tho day observed properly, a thorough sus? pension of all business was necessary, and that few persons were mora entitled to a holiday than the conductors and drivers of the street cars.* Un? fortunately for them, this doctrine has not found favor in the eyes of the powers that be, and they will bavo to pursuo their weary rounds, notwith? standing the national holiday. COURT OF GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMMON FLEAS, Hon. F. J. MOSES presiding.-The trial of Smart Chisolm, for the murder of his stop-daughter, Cornelia Verdior, was continued, and the remain? ing w.tnesscs were examined. The cntiro morn? ing was consumed in hearing this testimony, and the Court took a recess from 2 to 3 J?. M. In tho afternoon the argument for the defence was open? ed by Wit. TENNENT, Esq., who in an eloquent speech hud the case of his client before the jury; he reviewed the testimony advanced, and showed that ho was indicted solely on circumstantial evi? dence, and thero was not sufficient proof to base ? conviction upon. Mr. TENNENT's argument waa clear, sound and logical, and though but a young lawyer, bas shown that ho has not mistokon bis calling, but will evidently mount tho legal ladder. H. W. SCHROEDER, Esq., followed Mr. TENNENT, and was replied to by tho Attorney-General. Judge HOSES charged tho jury, who retired to their room, and at a late hour brought in a verdict of Guilty, with a recommendation to mercy. UNITED STATES CiuoTrrr COURT, Hon. GEORGE 3. BRYAN, presid:ng.-On motion of D. T. CORBIN, Esq., District Attorney, the order for a new jury list, tho samo ns that gi von in tho District Court, was issued. No business of importance was transacted. THE DAY WE CELEBRATE. -- The anniver? sary of the Declaration of Independence on Inly 4th, 1776, has over since boen celebrated as a groat national festival throughout tho Uni tod States and wherever Americans are assem? bled over tho whole world. From Maine to Ore? gon, from the great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, in every town and village thia day has been ushered in with the ringing of bolls, the firing or cannon, tho display of the national flag, and other evidences rf public rejoicing. A national salute is fired at junrise, noon, and at sunset from every fort and man-of-war ; tho troops and patriotic processions parade tho streets, the Declaration 4B read ind Fourth of July orations delivered. This was the programmo in tho past, but tho re? sent war has materially changed the public senti? ment regarding tho day. In the South there will probably bo few cities where the fourth will ro reivo tho same observances as wore customary six years ago. The present poverty of the coun? try and the absence of the militia displays, have tended in a great measure to destroy the old en? thusiasm felt for the fourth. Charleston will be enlivened on thia occasion by the usual salutes, and by a liberal display of bunt? ing Crom tho pnblio build-nga and shipping, though it has been with great difficulty that a sur? soient number of flags could bo obtained, as for jomo years past they have boon at a discount in ihe South. There will bo a procession of different K>oioliee in tho morning, which, Judging from the published programme, will be quite an afluir. The greatest feature of the day, however, and me which will recall more pleasing memories than iny other, will bo the sweet sound of St. Michaels sbimcs, which are to be rung during tho day. rhere are few persons who have not always associ? ated tho day with the sound of these bells, and tho mttsio that will float in the air to-day will have a nore powerfc'. effect in reconciling na to tho pre? sent than any display that could be made. lithe afternoon those parties who are so dis? posed can- leave the city and visit the different points pf interest in the harbor. Tho Fannie, 3apt. PECK, and the SL Helena, Capt. BOWLEY, viii make excursion tripa around the harbor. (These boats will be well supplied with music and ?efreshments, and afford the passengers a splen lid opportunity to enjoy the scenery and breathe ihe fresh air. The state of the thermometer will com pol many ?reons to exercise their ingenuity in trying to coop cool, and they can kill lime and invigorate heir heated systems by taking ices at the differ mt gardens. As a holiday the day oomee very pportunely, and is welcomed by none with moro inthuBiasm than by the typos, who are a hard rorking class and have few seasons of enjoyment. Little el Marshall : GENTLEMEN : I used, during tho past season, ono of "Ingersoll's Portabio Cotton Presses," purchased of you lost September. I have always been prejudiced in favor of the "Screw Press," and nothing but dire necessity in? duced me to try any other. I toko pleasure, however, In adding my testimony in favor of its eu tiru adaptation to tho wants of a cotton plantation. It has surpassed my most sanguine expectations. I have packed with but two hands, yot I prefer four-two at each levor. My balea all weighed over 600 lbs. Tho first lot I sent to market averaged 662 lbs. My impression is that 600 lbs. la about the capacity of tho Prose, and a greater number of pounds subject tho fbllow-block to too much risk, un? less tho sides of tho cotton box was increased. It would add greatly to the valu o of tho Press if tho cotton box was ten inches longer. In haste, I om, very respectfully, Your obedient servant, Ac, B. W. LAWTON. P. Tho Press I used in packing my cotton last year worked admirably, packing, with caso from 600 to 625 lbs. With good active hands to work it, I am satisfied that from eighteen to twenty bolos might readily be packed in a day. . This Press combines tho advantages of lightness, and consequent portability and simplicity (hoing easily man? aged by any ono of ordinary intelligence).
