THE SANANNAH STEAM FIRS ENGINES. -The three engines belonging to our sister city had a trial of j skill on Tuesday last, in presence of the Oglethorpe fire Company No. 2, of Macon, who had paid them a visit, and the following wis the result : Engine John J. Weaver, of the Gei mania Com. pany, two hundred and twenty-one feet ; John VY. Anderson, of the Oglethorpe, two hundred and thirty-two feet, six inches ; F. S. Bartow, of the Metropolitans, two hundred and thirty-six feet, nine inched. THB RAILROAD WARFARE ENDED.-The Columbia Pluenix of Saturday brings the intelligence that the difficulty between the Sooth Carolina Railroad and tho Columbia and Augusta Railroad was set? tled on Friday morning, by tho municipal authori? ties. Mr. .BaBCKOBtV Chief of Police, under the direction of the City Coan eil, proceeded to the di? pated point of territory, and, after a formal verbal j protest from the agent of the South Carolina Rail? road, directed Policeman COOPER to remove the engine, which waa done, and the crossing was piomptly laid. This is the result, as we premised. A LASOS TURTLE.-The visitors to the fish mar? ket on Saturday were regaled with the sight of a monster turtle who was reclining on his bock ap? parently mach to his disgust. This dweller in the great deep was captured on the fishing banks and from his appearance had been roaming through the world of wafc.ru Cor many years, for his shell was covered with barnacles, and his eye hud a fishy glare uko that of the aociont mariner. His fate ia ?Mied, and though he may haves few days respite he wm be ultimately sentenced to death, bat hk memory will h ve in the shape of a savory soap or tender steaks which we hope to see served up at some of our restaurante. ' .' >? On or the most pleasant and gracefully ar? ranged ice cream gardens'in the city is that of | Mrs. OL DONKZKAW, near the corner of Nassau and Columbus street, where the very choicest ices, Bherbot, lernonade, and confectionery of every de~ aoription, tempt even the most fastidious epicure. The proceeds this week, we are informed by an advertisement in to-day's News, will be devoted io the furtherance cf ? good cause, sis; the building of the new German Lutheran Church There is to be STSsflent momo also doting several evenings this week at this garden; and we doubt not Mrs. D. ?nil find plenty to do, with all her starL to servo the numerous customers attracted to her estab? lishment by the raiding of thia pail. EXPORTS TO NJCW Talk.-It is pleasing, amid the general dullness of the summer season, to notice the activity still display od along the wharves. The steamers to New York havo been carrying un- ' freights of cotton, naval stores, *c. - the Manhattanand ,Scuder left their wharves crowded with passengors, and with foll assorted cargoes of cotton, naval atores, vegetables and new potatoes. A singular addition to i usual Creight nats was the large number of mock? ing birds that were being sent North. A quantity of-these .Southern songsters have been captured, and large oonsig^runente are now made by the deafen to Northern ports, where they find a ready sale and command a high price. The labors of tbs stevedores waro frequently interrupted oh fl?jqwiay by the brimant notes that ware produced by the feathered warblers, and the passengers will forget tho dangers of these* in listening to their sweet notes. To THB FXEKKSN.-Wo have often wondered at the pertinacity of firemen in wearing the unwieldy ?and oucomfbrtable regnlaticn hat^ but presumed they were governed by some red tape principle, as the slightest regard to comfort would have induced a change. These hats weigh from fourteen to siTtsan ounoee, sad ? long run or hard poll at the ropes on ? hot day, Boon renders them ahnest an hssTsMe. The necessity for a change baa long boro mit, btu thc love of old customs and habits fcssprthe beary hat still in ase, though it is never donned without an anathema. ' ' Tho firemen in tho Northern ciMco Lave borne with this evil for many years, bot a ' movement is being made that will create ^revolution in the fire bat business. In Phi?sdelphis, several of tho fire con plaina hara adopted a new and. light fire cap, with a wreath in ?ro?al containing the number of j theoosopany. These cape sra somewhat in the ; .Jgrjb of those won, by: the nary officers, and haye i been found to be Hghter and mof? comfortable than tbs discarded hat. If these changes have been made in Philadelphia, they are certainly j 1 in this city, where the ehmste is much and we commend the subject to the at- ? tamtion o/our firemen. Ts wu the Jolly old Falstaff who made the re? mark "cannot I take mine ease in mine inn," and Uta old knight had too thorough a knowledge of the good things of tl us life to have made such an assertien without knowing, that it was correct. Since his day an inn has always been considered the resort for all who wish to enjoy themselves and to experience that comfort found only around asocial hearth. Thegwd old daya when these runs flourished have long since passed away, but their memory still lives, and a recent military or- I dar has infused new vitality into their remains, and an inn is now all that it was when eulogized by Sir JOSTS. -To the old citiseos of Charleston tbs name of | Kaoxo is a famfHar- Bound, and they know that he is ono of the few who can keep a hotel. His up? town retreat will long bo remembered by those who fought around Charleston, and the knowledge that he hao re-opened in Wentwortn street, near j the Masonic Hail, will ensure him hosts of custom era. Mr. Ksoxo aspires to keep an Inn as it should be kept, i. e.: he has accommodations for both man and beast, and is prepared to give all a hoe-1 pitsble reception. 1 We commend his establish ment to the public, knowing that he is a good Sam? aritan who wiU take them in and treat them to the best the market can Bupply. EXCURSION ABOUND THE HARBOR.-The excur? sion party who went with the SL Helena oe her trip around the harbor on Saturday night last, ?are unanimous in their praises of the boat, the weather and "the music, and voted tire trip a per? fect success. The sky was illumined by the sil? very rays of the moon, and the rippling waters seemed like a brilliant sea, while the sweet sounds of music added a new charm to the scene, and made the SL Helena appear like a thing of life. Ample preparations had boen made for the trip, and the number of passengers present proved that the charms of the night were too powerful an at? traction to be resisted, und a life cn the ocean war? was ander some circumstances, the happiest that could be chosen. The usual route pursued by the excursion boats was altered, and the St. Helena stopped al Mount Pleasant both going abd returning, and many of the villagers were thus enabled to join the pleas? ure party. On leaving Mount Pleasant, the vessel ?teamed around the harbor, allowing her passen? gers an opportunity to seo Sumter's grim walls lighted up with a halo of glory, besides going near enough to recognize Fort Johnson and tho batteries on Morris and Sullivan's Islands. James Island, was wondrously beautiful, and the tall pines glistened in the moonlight, and looked like au- army of* giants, whose - serried ranks would never be broken by the woodman's ax ->. Indeed, avery object was so much improved in appearance, and the beauty of the whole waa sb striking, that it would be hard to specify any in particular. The Bight will long be remembered by the excursion porty, and we trust (hat this will be but the first of many similar trips that will be made by the St. DEATH or MSB. MIXES.-Our friend and noigh I bor, QB o. G. MIXES, Esq., has our sincero sympa? thy in the BOTO bereavement which he has been ced!ed upon to undergo. Mrs. MXXXB died on Sat? urday morning, after a brief firness*Jeaving. chree little children. Her funeral obsequies were hold at Grace Church yesterday afternoon, attended by a large number of friends. Her remains were placed in the receiving vault at Magnolia, whence they ore to be taken to the North, to be deposited by the aide of her family. THE HABMONIANS to-night will give another en? tertainment at Hibernian Hall, for the benefit of that prince of minstrels, Mr. W. BOYCE, who is a great favorite with the public. They had a fine house on Saturday evening, and called our risible muscles into frequent and violent play. The Har? monious have some excellent voices in their troupe and quite a respectable orchestra. The two "end players" are geniuses in their line, gro? tesque almost to extravagance, yet sufficiently true to nature to be very funny. We hope they will have a fine house to-night, so that Mr. BOYCE'S benefit may result in something more than a mere empty compliment. FntE.-At half-past 10, P. M., Saturday, smoke was discovered issuing from a house in Tradd street, near King, occupied by Mrs. HJBSH FIELDT. The alarm was immediately given, but by the exertions of Messrs. MATTHEWES and ALLY, the dames were subdued before the arrival of the engines. It was evidently the work of an incendiary, as the lathing under the staircase had been broken, and a quantity of pine straw anl lightwood shavings stoned in the opening. This was ignited by the incendiaries, but the fortunate arrival of the assistance mentioned above, saved the house from being destroyed. The case has been put in the hands of the detectives, and it is hoped that the guilty party will soon be caught and punished. SUICIDE. -At Sf P. M. on Suturday a negro in? formed th? police that a man wan. ly in g down in a small ?bed on Anson street, near CLATJ&SEN'S old mill. On rerjairing to tho spot it was found that Mr. CLAUEN cit WOOLV has selected that place for the purpose of commit Ling anicide, which was done by drinking laudanum, a bottle of which was found near him '. He had removed his coat and turned it wrong side out, and had scraped up the shavings to serve as a pillow. When found he bad evidently been dead for some time. In his pocket was a note giving his reason for the rash deed; he sta ted that he was tired of life, and on aooount of ? some family differences had determined to leave this world. Coroner WHITLNO was at once notified to hold an inquest, and the Jury returned a verdict of ] Feh de se. . RALE OT DBI Goose.-At an auction sale of dry goods held by Messrs. ESCAPE CROM JAIL.-At 8* A. M. Sunday Thoa. Williams, a colored prisoner confined in the jail, duooeeded in wrenching the look from the gate on Magasina street, and made his escape His flight was seen by the police on guard, and Williams was closely pursued, and, after an exciting chase, captured near the corner of Smith and Calhoun streets. It - to fortunato that the police guard are vigilant, for they have frequently prevented escapes that have been almost completed. The prisoners are allowed certain hours of the day for relaxation, bot these are more frequently employed in devising and perfecting plans of escape It to ? singular that the recent attempts to escape have been made in the day time, when it is presumed the turnkeys and jailors would detect any viola? tions of the prison rules. The police who guard the outside have strict orders not to leave their posts, except on a cry of murder, and by their attention to their duties they have been enabled to frustrate several attempts that were well planned. MAYOS's COTJBT, Jose 15.-Jim Jones, a youth? ful darkey, who has been several times before His Honor for throwing bricks in the street, was ap for the same offends, and was ordered to be locked up for ten days. Charlea Williams, a man of color, and one of a | class of students devoted to the science of mirth ology, who had taken a lot of fowls of difieren t ages and appearance to experiment upon, was brought up to be examined, and, as he proved himself well np in his profession, he was desired to go toto retirement for ten days, during which time he can issue a treatise on n fine pair of j chickens that were missing, and which, we have no doubt, he has already "fflustratecr with plates," Nancy alias Hannah Reese, a colored damsel from one of the country villages, who, being in want of clothing, helped herself to a bundle be? longing to another party, and was arraigned for the offence, and had just pleaded guilty when another female complainant appeared and stated that about a month ago she had been asked by the prisoner for a place to sleep in, and that she landry allowed her to sleep with her, the com? plainant, and that the defendant, on the following day, got into tho room and carried off all the por? table property Which her means of transportation allowed her to take She waa immediately incar? cerated for two weeks. PrrnoLBpat STOBEHOUSK.-By a recent city ordi? nance , it becomes rintowful from this date, to keep more than fifty gallons Petroleum, Kerosins, Bock Oil, Benzine, Benzole, or any other inflammable oil or oils on storage or for sale, in any store or build- \ ing south of Line street. The penalty attached to a violation of thia ordinance, (a fine of two hun? dred dollars,) is severe, and we trust that the citi? zens will at once make arrangements to comply pith ft? provisions, and have their surplus stock of oils removed to some suitable store house Messrs. SPBAGTJE ft VINOXKT have recently erected a large and commodious warehouse on the King i tree t road, two hundred yards above Sheppard, which, to admirably adapted far this purpose. It to erne hundred and four feet long, by thirty wide, and te built of brick and wood, covered by a fire? proof shed. The provisions of the act require that a warehouse should be employed that will be large enough to accommodate the stock of oils, and will yet be of convenient access to the city. That built by Messrs. SPBAO CB & VINCENT answers these ends admirably, aa it is but a short distance from the business centre of the city, and can be easily communicated with by drays. Messrs. SFBABUB SC VINCENT are prepared to take orders for storing these oils, and have made arrange? ments by which they can be drayed to or from the warehouse at a considerable reduction on the usual prices. The gentlemen who have inaugurated this enterprise are young men of ability and en? ergy, and we feel confident in saying that their present undertaking will prove a success, and in commending them to the patronage of the mer? chants. THE MOONLIGHT BEBENAUE.-The Battery, which , is usually adorned of a Saturday afternoons with a 1 arge portion of the youth, and beauty of this city, who congregate there to liston to the delightful musi? of the Band of the Sixth Infantry, presented Saturday evening, not only an unusual, but a most magnificent appearance. Instead of performing in daylight aa heretofore, the musicians selected the hour of eight to commence their concert, knowing that the brightness of tho moon which j to in the full, would lend a greater charm to the j pleasant strains with which they are in the habit, i weekly, of indulging tho public. That this change coincided exactly with the views of our people, j was evidenced in the attendance of an immense throng, which filled almost every part of the walks and park of this delightful promenade. The moon shone with a peculiar brilliancy, touching the rippling river with beautiful rays of molten silver, while a refreshing breeze circulated and made the evening a most delightful one. The la? dies, to our mind, never appeared lo enjoy them? selves more, nor were the gentlemen ever happier, wlnle tho children seemed to reg aid it as the hap? piest moment of their fives. In fact, it looked to us Uko a gala night, and we inwardly wished we could see more of such evenings in our good old ci fy; When the music had ceased, and the street cars became filled with lively eyes and smiling Ups, and we observed the crowds who were in tho coaches on their way toward home, as merry as larks, we felt delighted at seeing them, on one oc? casion at least, forgetting their troubles for a tune, .and. cu torin g into an enjoyment that strong? ly reiniiidt<d-u?joi' the oWen timos. INGERSOLL'S HAND POWER COTTON PRESS. Among the numerous labor-saviug m achines that have been brought to tLo South since the war, there is none perhaps of more utility than the hand-power colton press ; it has entirely supersed? ed the old time screw formerly Been on every plantation, and wherever tried is at onoe adopted as the most suitable for the purpose. These presses are of different sizes, generally packing from three to five hundred pounds, and if the pro? per forced is used, eighteen to twenty bales might be packed in a day. As these presses are now worked entirely by band-power, the horses are saved this labor and their strength preserved for farm work. Great compressing force can be ob? tained with little motive power, and as the Press is extremely light, it can easily be carried from place to place. Those planters who have tried this Press concur in its advantages, and in the present slate of the labor question it should be used by all who wish to economise either time or money. Messrs. LITTLE & MARSHALL are the agents for this Press in this city, and any orders left at their agricultural wardrooms, No. 140 Meet? ing street, opposite the Pavilion Hotel, will meet prompt attention. OPINIONS OF THE PEOPLE t ALLENDALE, BARNWELL DISTRICT, S. 0., ) March 1,1667. I Meurt. Little <? Mar shill : GENTLEMEN : I aged, daring tho past season, one of I "Ingersoll's Portable Cotton Presses," purchased of yon last September. I have always been prejudiced in favor of the "Screw Press," and nothing but dire necessity in? duced me to try any other. I take pleasure, however, in adding my testimony in favor of its entire adaptation to the wants oi a cotton plantation. It has surpassed my most sanguino expectations. I have packed with but two hands, yet I prefer four-two at each lever. Hy balee all weighed over 600 lbs. The first lot T sent to market averaged 6621 i.s. Hy Impression ls that 600 lbs. is about the capacity of tho Press, and a greater number of pounds subject the foilow-block to too much risk, un? less the sides or the cotton box was increased. It would add greatly to the value of the Press if the cotton box was ten inches longer. In haste, I am, very respectfully. Tour obedient servant, Ac, a. w. LAWTON. P.S.I took my Press down and carried it some four miles to pack the crop of a neighbor, who failed to have a "Screw" built; he was so much pleased that he has determined to abandon the "Screw" and purchase "In? gersoll's Press." { B. The Press I used In packing my cotton last year worked admirably, packing, with ease from 600 to 626 lbs. With good active hands to work it, I am satisfied that from eighteen to twenty balee might readily be packed m adey. This Pr es combines tho advantages of lightness, and consequent portability and simplicity (being easily man? aged bj any one of ordinary Intelligence). Great com? pressing force, with little motive j power, and "last, bot not least," it ls worked entirely by hand, thus saving for the farm horses the hard labor 1 m posed upon them by the use of the ordinary "Screw."
