Thai excellent Weekly the " Eeo wee Courter," published at Pi okena Court House, has been en? larged to its "ante-war standard, '' which it pleases ns much to notice. Mr. LITTLE, the editor of the Eastern Journal, Bennettsville, 8. C., paid ns a hasty visit on Monday night. He informs ns that things work along quietly up fa the northeastern section of the State. Crops lively, politics doll and decliniug. Tn BOMBAY. -This fine American shiD, which has been loading for Liverpool by Messrs. COUBTZ NAY & TBXHHOLM, has nearly completed her cargo, aa she needs at present only 450 balee of cotton. We can safely recommend the Bombay to ship pera as a mst, commodious and superior vessel. WK call attention to the advertisement of a fine assortment of Travelling Trunks at No. 137 Meet? ing street, up-stairs. The Eugenia Patent Trunk ia worthy of inspection-it is a complete wardrobe combined in a medium size trunk, the price of | which is $25. All tourist should have one. SOSA WATER.-The cooling properties of this drink are too well known to need % eulogy, but we would refer particularly to that dispensed by Messrs. H. Boes & Ca, at their different stands in the city. TA Hasel street, near the Pavilion Hotel, can be found a stand that is par excellence the coolest, cosiest retreat in the city. Messrs. Bu ex Sc Co. have spared no pains to make their Soda Water establishments attractive to the pub? lic, and the patronage they receive is a sure sign of their success Cm lxFBOVXMZirrs.-Notwithstanding the hard times, the marah of progress still continues and the etty improvement? though slow are sure. Al? ready the appearance of many of the side-walks has been improved, and on the side streets new wooden our be have I "en laid and pavements form? ed of the hard earth. This is eepecially noticeable in the side streets where the side-walks have been sadly in need of reconstruction. The west end of j Queen street is now being arranged' in this man? ner, and when completed the street will become a pleasant promenade instead of an uneven, danger? ous walk aa at present. MAYOB'S CoVBT-June ll.-Ann Leahy, one of | the moat pugnacious of women, who had been brought from the street in a state of intoxication, win sn eye ffiuminabid by several colors, and when called befare his Honor rushed in dealing tjrtiantin> "dabs'* upon every.member of the police wno came in her way, WM sentenced to be looked up ten deja, and* was carried out of court just as I abe seemed tb be warming up to her pugilistic work. Father RYAN'S reputation aa a poet, patriot and Christian, is so well known that he will have no . difficulty in obtaining a full audience at his lec? tures, and we hope that hie tour will not be con? fined to Augusta; hut that inducements will be offered him to pay the "City hy the Sea" a visit. A lecture delivered by him would always command attention, sad if in aid of the orphans of tile Sisters of Mercy, would realise a handsome amount for their support. Tnt Cm FLORA. -Th e burnt district of Charles? ton now oilers rare inducements for a botanical visit, and a ramble through that once desolate sec? tion will convince the, beholder that nature has been prodigal of her treasures and has covered the unsightly ruins with a flowery carpet. It is true that the different floral specimens are easily counted, but the desert is now blossoming like the rose, and the chango from desolation to beauty wfll at once attract the attention, and the eye will return with pleasure to the wavy sea of green veg? etation variegated with white and yellow flowers. At present these so-called weeds have complete possession of the burnt district and have grown and flourished to the exclusion of the grass which wan formerly sparsely scattered around the burnt bricks. The cowa, deprived of their accustomed meale, have deserted this unpromising locality and have betaken themselves to the side and back street?, where the grass grows on the pavements, and between the cobble-stones with wild luxuri? ance. The scarcity of labor and the necessity for retrenchment have induced the City Council to let this grass flourish unmolested, subject only to the attacks of the ravenous kine who roam in those sections. Aa the season advances the vegetation will in" croase, and different plants will be propagated from seeds that have been lodged by the wind. Already we notice several varieties of fennel, the wild ohammomile, the poke, and the Jamestown bushes, the TWO latter having attained a vigorous growth. The berries of the poke have been used for dyeing, and would make a homely rouge for the complexion, while the leaves, when properly cooked, are an excellent substitute for greens, and were much sought after, by the Confederate sol? diers as a great addition to the army rations. Of the Jamestown weed it ia almost useless to speak, its virtues are well known, and it ia recommended by the "yarb doctora" as an infallible cure for numerous diseases. When dried and sr ?oked in a pipe it imme? diately relieves asthmatics, and in its various pre? parations is an important addition to the "yerb biflt's" stock of simples, bu i we would advise the ignorant to handle it carefully, as on account of its poisonous qualities it often kills, instead of curing. The appearance of the burnt district has been much improved by these efforts of Nature to as? sert hex supremacy, and the vegetation now cover? ing this spot is far more pleasing to the eye than the bare earth and the burnt bricks that were once visible. As it is impossible to expect, in the pres? ent depressed state of finances, that any general efforts will be made to rebuild this section, we are pleased to see that some improvement has been m?A? in its appearance, and though it will never btSBjaj a pleasure ground, it is no longer an eye? sore. ' THOMAS S. LEB, Esq., who was formerly con? nected with the State Bank, has been Appointed Surveyor-General by his Excellency Governor OBS. A notice of importance to Deputy Surveyors is published in yesterday morning's Columbia Phamix. THE ATTENTION of dealers is invited to the auc? tion Bale of thc cargo of Molasses, ex schooner Azdda & Laura, from Caibarien, at ll o'clock this day, on KERB'S Wharf, by Messrs. J. A. ENSLOw ? Co. There are few persons who are not familiar with the fun and drollery of au Ethiopian Troupe, and it is at once Been that the Harmonious make no false pretensions, but are equal to any that have visited the city. The mo? desty of the performers has induced them to as? sume false nam es, but neither that or their color? ed faces could destroy their identity, as their reputation as vocalists had long been es? tablished. The comic songs were rendered with such a mirth provoking effect that they were repeatedly applauded, while the "happy colored boy, 5 with his rolling eyes, witty tongue, and small handkerchief, kept up the enjoyment by a succession of comic anecdotes that had the great advantage of being original. It would be useless to criticise, for all were perfect from the singist to the dancist. We learn that the troupe have been induced to continue their performances, and haw? engaged the Hibernian Hall for the remainder of the week. As. the weather is now prosperous, the moon bright, and the skiea clear, there will be no difficulty presented, and wo advise all who can to attend, and they will hear good music and enjoy a hearty laugh. STEELE'S invitation to his fellow citizens to call in a friendly way and pasa their opinion upon his new summer styles, has rendered his spacious es? tablishment a sort of World's Fair for several days past. His leading styles-the most beautiful, highly finished, and classic models ever submitted to the taste and fashion in the South, are a lure not to be resisted, especially when these gems of the season, notwithstanding their palpable supe? riority of any others in the city, are sold at low figures. STEELE'S Hat Hall is at No. SIS King street, between Wentworth and Liberty streets, sign of the "Big Hat." 2 MAB&TXKH'S PECTORAL BALM cures all cases of Whooping Cough. DO WIE A MOISE, Agents. SELBY, Proprietor, February 26 Colombia, S. A National Medicine. One can hardly pick op a newspaper or tum a street corner now-a-daya that ha does not find, staring him tn the face, the announcement that Prof. So-and-so has jost discovered s medicine which ls a panacea for aU the His that flesh ia, or may be heir to. These ..wonderful" discoveries usually have an existence of a few months, then disappear from public notice. The reason of their sodden extinguishment is apparent They were hum? bugs. At Ute outset sh medicinal preparations have an equal chance for success, as aU are equally unknown; but the chaff is soon winnowed from the grain by the practical test which an unprejudiced public applies to all things. There are bat lew preparations of medicine which have withstood the impartial judgment of the people for any length of time. One of Ute few which we have now in mind, and which has been a long time fa? miliar to nearly every household in the land, ls the cele? brated HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. Their almost universal sale and use, and their emphatic en? dorsement from ail portions of the country, compel the admission that thev must be a specific for the ailments for which they are recommended. Letters before us attest their efficacy In dis oases of the throat, bowels and liver. In that truly terrible complaint dyspepsia, they aro regarded as a sure cure. In Pittsburgh, where these Bitters are manufactured, their sale fdr home use is im? mense. This fact alone speaks vol?mes In their favor. Extracts from Ike Muicatine Courier, Iowa, Feb. 7, 1867. Maj 23 Imo SARATOGA "EXCELSIOR" SPRING WATER. nrVflE WATER OF THIS SPRING IS BELIEVED TO X he unequalled by that of any other in the far-famed valley of Saratoga. Its virtues are such as have secured it the high encomiums of all who have used it, possess? ing, as it does, in an eminent degree, cathartic, diuretic, alterative and tonio qualities. From SAMUEL HENRY DICKSON, UL D., Professor Practice of Physic, Jefferson Medical College, Phila? delphia, formerly of Charleston ,s. C. PuILAOELPHIA, November 15, I860. I have been for a year or more past in the habit ol taking the water of the "Excelsior" Spring of Saratoga. Accustomed during the great portion of my Invalid hie to use the different waters of the several fountains which boil up along mat remarkable valley, dependent, indeed, upon them lor much of the comfort I enjoy, I am satis fled that the Excelsior Water ls as well adapted as any other among thom, if not more io, to the purpose:) for which they are generally o mployed. Il is very agreeable, strongly impregnated with the carbonic acid, hvely and sparkling. * * * I can heartily and conscientiously recommend it to all who need a gent?o cathartic and diuretic. SAMUEL HENRY DICKSON. M. D. The Water is put up in Pint and Quart bottles, and packed in good order for snipping, Pints in boxe? ot tour dozen each, and Quarts in boxes of two dozen each SOLO AT WHOLESALE B7 GOODRICH, WIN?M1N & CO., Importers and Wholesale Druggists, No. 153 MEETING STREET, OPPOSITE CHARLESTON HOTEL. SHEFFIELD SCIENTIFIC SCHOOL, ) ENOINEEP.INO DEPARTMENT, [ YALE COLLEUE, November 16, 1866. ) I have always recommended the Faber Polygrade Lead Pencils as tho only pencils fitted for both ornamen? tal and mathematical drawing; but, after a thorough trial of the American Polygrade Lead Pencils, man? ufactured by the American Lead Pencil Company, New York, I find them superior to any pencil in use, even to tbe Faber or thc old English Cumberland Lead Pencil, being a superior pencil tor sketching, ornamental and mechanical drawing, and all the ordinary uses of a lead pencil. These pencils are very finely graded and have a very smooth load; even the sottest pencils hold the point well; they are all that can bc desired in a pencil, lt gives mo great pleasure to be able to aseure Americans that they will no longer be compelled to depend upon Germany or any other ioreigu nurbel for pcnp'la.
