Tax Som or TEJCEBANCE.-The disastrous cflecta of the war bare been felt by the whole com munity, but it has proved a deajh blow to many societies that were flourishing bodies before that epoch. This is especially noticeable in the differ exnt texoperance organizations that, were once ' strong and active associations, but. which hare never been resnaciated since the surrender. While the wai lasted these associations drooped and lan- j guished, and finally died. This was owing to tho absence of their members in the army, and to the erU effects of camp life, which rendered it almost impossible for these principles to be preserved. That demoralizing period has fortunately passed, and the few survivors hare returned to their homes With a determination to commence life anew and to reorganise the old associations in which they were once active members. This has been done in many instances, but the cause of temperance has been neglected, and no efforts hare apparent? ly been made to revive the order. While the warjwas raging, missionaries por? trayed, in glowing colors, the evils of intemper? ance, and tho Government did all in their power I to aid' the cause by suppressing distilleries and furnishing the supplies of liquor only in limited quantities. Now, this is' ail changea, and, with the exception ot* the heavy duties, no efforts hare been made either to stop the trafilo or to reorgan? ise the different orders of the Sons of Temper? ance, the Cadets, ox the Bechabites. We do not desire to see the spirit of rabid fanaticism carried to the same extent that is visible in the Northern cities, for these wholesale restrictions only cause the rotaries of the flowing bowl to use every ef? fort to evade them, and result in the discomfit uro of the Puritans, who will find themselves unable at last to cope with the opposition. This experiment has been tried in Maine and other New England States and proved to be the grandest humbug of j the day. 1 Before the war our temperance societies were weU attended, and were the means of effecting much good in reclaiming those who only needed some controlling influence to cause them to break off from their evil associations. There are cer? tainly many old members of the different temper? ance societies who still preserve their allegiance to the cold water army, and a determined effort on their part would soon restore vitality to the order, and numbera will enroll themselves as soldiers in BxETTH SHALOM.-We direct attention to an ap? peal tobe found in another column, in behalf of the Hebrew congregation Berith Shabm, in ibis city, who solicit sid for the building ol their new synagogue. A STRANGE GUEST.-A crowd collected near the Milla House portico yesterday evening to examine a email fawn which a negro was leading by string. The little animal was very tame, and waa evidently too young to know fear, as it manifested no alarm at the crowd which surrounded it. was quite small and had not yet lost its spots. We learn that it was captured near the city. ST. BABNABS'S DAT.-Before the change in the stylo, the Uth of June was the day of the summer solstice. This was expressed proverbially in Eng? land as "Barnaby bright. The longest day and tho shortest night" It was customary on this day for the priests and clerks of the English Church to wear garlands of the rose of woodron". The day was originally celebrated in boaor of ST. BARNABAS, the Apostle, who was canonized in the first century. TEE HABMONEONS.- This Alinstrel Troupe will give another of their popular performances to? night at the Hibernian Hali. The Company have prepared the programme for to-night with gr, at care, and a visit will recompense aU who desire hearty laugh and an evening's enjoyment. This Troupe is composed of young Charles toni ina, who are a credit, both to their assumed characters, and to the city, and we predict for them a successful engagement and Ml houses. Furs PASSAGE FROM NEW YORK.-The splendid side-wheel steamship Manhattan, ot 1300 tons, Captain M. S. WOODHULL, arrived at quarantine ground, below this port, yesterday afternoon, after 4 o'clock, having left New York on Saturday last at 1 P. M., thus performing the trip between the two cities in the unusually short period of forty-eight hours, being one of the best runs ever mads be? tween the two ports, and displaying the superior management of her long tried and capable com? mander. Captain WOODHULL, who was, for many years before the war, the favorite in the old Sa? vannah line of steamers. The Manhattan has, through her attentive Purser, Mr. J. P. GABHXSB, placed us in possession of New York dates of j Saturday, being one day in advance of the land j route. The Manhattan belongs to MOBO AN a lin? of side-wheel steamships, consigned to STBXET B-OTBXBS&GO. WEHTMXNSnra ABBEY.-The reading on this sub? ject, which had been previously postponed on account of the weather, took placo last night at the drawing room of. the Carolina Hooso, in Broad street. The parlor had been fitted np for the occaeion, a raised dais having been placed at ons end, .and chairs arranged in a semicircle for the audience, A number' of ladies were present, and the chairs in both the parlor and ante? room were occupied. The talented lady waa wall acquainted with her subject, and treated it in a. very attractive style that kept the attention of her audi on ce enchained to the close. Daniel Middleton, a colorad youth, who had broken open the residence of a family of fowls and carried off the entire institution, but was caught with some of the elder members on bis arm, hav? ing disposed of a donan of their juniors, was ar? raigned, but a Large dirk having been found upon his person, ne was sent to the Provost Marshal, and on his return will be prosecuted by the owner of the poultry. A storekeeper in King street, who obstructs the sidewalk with a large glass case, was fined $6. Seven Chimney sweepers, who disturbed a con? gregation by making a noise in front of a church on Sunday, were fined ll each.
