Then the rich, rei color ' of the mest was a pleasing contrast to tho white fat that covered it; but this is now changed, and neither the quantity nor the quality are the same. A walk through the markets produces only vexa? tion of spirit, for the skinny, dark meat offered for r,ssis is not sufficiently tempting to invite 'pur? chasers, while from the prices demanded-35@30 oente per pound-only a few are enabled to invest. , Thia' condition of the meat murkets has driven .many pereons to the ash stalls, where they oap obtain s dinner within the limit of their purees. 1 The butchers of Charleston aro, perhaps, not responsible for the lean and soraggy look of their meat, for the State has been entire y drained of all .'good beef cattle, end it is frequently impossible to \ obtain thom from Tennessee and the other States . that iormeriy supplied this market. At the close _ of the war every farmer was anxious to obtain a fsw of the coveted greenb:oks, and his cattle were si once driven to Charleston and sold. Since that time the failure of the crops and the want of sufficient attention has made the few remaining bee vee to be found in the country poor and m bad oondition. A good meat market is almost indispensible to the health of a city, for vegetables and fU'h aro of ' ten tabooed in the summer, and to a laboring man beef is a necessity, but the deleterious character of that now offered for sale frequently prevents its use. During the summer months this evil will be increased, and, though kept in ice, the meat deal? ers will find their stock become "stale, flat and un proHtable." . : Formerly many head of cattle were brought from Florida, and as that State did not suffer to any extent during the war, large droves are still to be obtained from the same source. The differ? ent boats plying between this city and Florida do not pey much over their expenses in the summer months; but if some enterprising character could DS found who would give the cattle trade an im? petus, it would prove a remunerative speculation. By the mt reduction of good moat into the mar? ket, tbs villainous substitute now offered for sale would disappear, the prices would fall, and th J market bocome'improved. THEFT or MONEY DHAWXH,-Some excitement was created oh. Saturday afternoon by a negro ma i named Edward Laurens, who dashed into the a torfe of Mr. H. BAHHTQX, on the corner of Franklin an I Queen streets, and struck Mrs. BAHHTQX, whil ) ho endeavored to seize the money drawer. He succeeded in grasping only a small portion of the money, and made his pscape; bnt his action was seen by several colored men, who immediately gave obese, and after sa exciting nm over and around the burnt district, Laurens was captured, the money recovered, and he was lodged in the Guard House. " RCEEKBT.-On the 25th ult., SxroLDia's mnsio store was entered from the yard by some thieves ir ho jumped the fence on Bean rain street, end by wrenching open a window obtained an entranoe.
