MONDAY MORNING, MAY 27, 1867. LOCAL MATTERS. JOB WORK.-We have now completed our office so as to execute, in tho shortest possible time ATT. KINDS OP JOB WORK, and we most re? spectfully ask the patronage of om* friends. Post Office Notice. ' POST OFFICE, | CHARLESTON, S. C., May 6,18C7. J Hereafter, until furthei notice, tho Northeastern Mails will dose at 1.15 P. M., and arriving at tho Depot at 9.45 A. M. will be ready for delivery at ll o'clock. On Sundays the Post Office will open at 12.30 P. M. for one hour. The Mails for South Carolina Railroad will con? tinue to oloso daily at 6 o'clock A M., and for tho Savannah and Charleston Railroad at CAM. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. _ "STAN LEY G. TROTT, P. M. y MB. VOGLER, No. 108 Market street, has our thanks ior late New York papers, weekly and daily. DEATH or AH OLD CHARLVSTONIAN.-The Colum? bia Phoenix bringa tho sod intelligence of tho death of Mr. C. J. ELFORD, on old citizen of Charleston, but f r nome time a resident of Green? ville, South Carolina. Mr. ELFORD was a promi? nent and energetic citizen of Greenville, and his death will be felt by that community. ALARU or FTES.-On Saturday afternoon, an j alarm of .fire was given, which was traced to MARSH'S Wharf, but was found to be caused by the occidental burning of some shavings at a work shop. No damage was done, and though the en? gines turned ont promptly, the bells were not nmg and the fire was soon extinguished. ACCIDENT.- Hr. EDWARD BAKER, an employee of the South Carolina Railroad, had his hand severe? ly mashed on Saturday, in a turning lathe, at the company's shop, j The fingers of the right hand were mashed off, and amputation was found to he necessary. Medical advice was promptly called in, and at last accounts Mr. BAKER was doing well. DOWNFALL.-Many of our readers will be griev? ed to learn that the large tree which formerly stood 4 near the corner ol King and Yanderhorst Streets, was blown down hythe wind of yesterday morning. This tree was quite old and partially decayed, and wanted merely a slight blow to prostrate it. The soldiers and others were busy in cutting np . and removing the trunk yesterday, and there will soon he no vestige of the tree remaining." ATLANTA TURNVEREIN.-lt will, doubtless, sur? prise some of our German fellow-citizens to learn that Atlanta has a Turnverein. Such we find, however, to be the case, and on Tuesday last, they celebrated their anniversary, had tumblings, ?Vc, Ac., and di txibution of prizes. Mr. M. L. LlCH TRNBTADT, the New Era informs ns, delivered a very handsome speech, "a tine effort," "in the pur_ est of all idioms, the German language." The af? fair passed off very happily, and seems to have ex? cited a good deal of attention among the dwellers of the Gate City. AN OPTICER'S REMAINS.-The body of Col. W. D. DESAU asuma, who commanded the 15th Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers in the late war, and who was Killed in the terrible struggle at Gettys? burg, arrived here yesterday in the steamship Falcon, from Baltimore. The deceased served through the Mexican war as Captain in the Pal? metto Regiment; was twice wounded at Chumbus oo, and'distinguished at the DeBe.in gate; in ?0. March, 1855, he was appointed Captain in the 1st Cavalry ?. 8. A., in which regiment he served, mainly in the West, until tho commencement of tho late war. HOMESTEAD BUILDING AND LOAN ASSOCIATION. This association held their first meeting Saturday evening, at which the following officers were elected: ' W. G. WHTLDEN, President' a P. AIM AR, Director. H. B. OLNEY, Director. 8. 0. BLACK. Director. JNO. HEISEMAN, Director. Fifteen hundred shares have been taken, and there is every prospect that the association will he favorably received hy the community. For the present the office of the company will be found at the atora'of Messrs. W. G. WHXLDBN ? Co., corner of King and Beaniain afreets. PALMETTO- BASE BALL CLUB.-This club played their usual game on Saturday afternoon, bnt th ore waa a larger attonclance and more spirit shown in the playing than usual. The knowledge that a rival club had been established may have added to the interest, as the Ater?s an? ticipate a* contest when they are sufficiently drilled. But, from the performance of the Palmettos on Saturday, they will have a severe struggle before them. Six innings were played on Saturday, and the winning aide made thirty-two runs, to twenty? -one made by their opponents, i he dub was equally divided, and the playing attracted consid? erable attention from the number of spectators who wera on tho ground. j? " FIRE.-At 3 P.M. yesterday a fire was discovered in an out-building in the rear of Messrs. SHEP? HERD <k COHEN'S tin factory and warehouse, in Baoa street. The bell soon sounded the alarm, bnt before the engines could roach the spot the names had communicated with the battery, and the scarcity of via ter prevented any efforts being made to preserve the bnildingB. Messrs. SHEPHERD ck COHEN had carefully avoided the use of fire, and had even rented the ont-bn t idings re? ferred to in order to keep strangers from tho premis?e. No fire had been need, and when the shop was closed on Saturday night everything was in good order. The out-building, it appears . from examination, nod been surreptitiously occu? pied, as when the alarm was sounded the doors were found open, and there were other signs that induced this belief. The factory and buildings being of wood, the flames spread rapidly, and in a short time the whole place was in a blaze, and very little property was saved, the machinery, tinware, dec., falling a prey to the devouring element. Al? though the engines were promptly on the ground, they were unable to exhibit their powers from ' ? want of water, and the fire was only confined to the building where it originated. The factory was the property of Mr; Duo, and was insured for $1000 in the agencies of Mr. HONOUR; bnt there was no insurance on tho stock and fixtures, and the loss in that respect will probably reach four or five thousand dollars. MELANCHOLY. ACCIDENT.-At 9 A. M. on Satur? day, while-Mr. ROBERT JORDAN, Sr., for many years the Superintendent of the Wost Point Mills, was engaged in his usual duties in the mill, he inad? vertently stepped upon a slippery stave, which precipitated him upon the circular ai- w then in oparation. In falling, Mr. JORDAN succeeded in twisting himself round, and the ' saw struck him on the right side, inflicting a severe wound back and below, the right shoulder. All of the ribs, we learn, were severed from the backbone, and the saw cut into the cavity of the chest. Mr. JORDAN succeeded in extricating himself, and, though bleeding profusely, walked to his house, some four hundred yards distant, where his daughter, with admirable presence of mind, tore np a sheet and made a bandage which controlled the hemorrhage until the arrival of the surgeon. Dr. W. C. HORLREOK was, fortunately, at the mill, attending a patient, and was immediately called in; together with Dr. A. P. PELZER, who, for some time, considered the case hopeless. Thc f. remedies applied, however, seemed to be effica? cious for th < patient enjoyed a sound sleep on Saturday night, arid the symptoms are now con? sidered moro favorable and hopes arc entertained of his ultimate recovery. Apparatus baa been ap? plied which keep the bones in position. Skillful professional attendance, good nursing aud a good constitution may enablo Mr. JORDAN to weather the B torin and make a good recovery. BAPTISM.-The steamer Planter, Captain FER? GUSON, was chartered by the congregation of Cal? vary Baptist Church (colored) to tako tho candi? dates for baptism and others to Daniel's Island, on the Wando River, where the rite of baptism was to be performed. At 10 A. M a large crowd collected at Yenning'* Wharf, and by the time the .steamer started there were fully three hundred on hoard. The day was beautiful, tho sun being somewhat shrouded by the clonds, and both ?me and tide suited admirably. At 12 M. the Planter reached the camping ground, and a tem? porary wharf having been erected by her Captain, It was immediately pressed into service by tho passenger3, who gladly took up tho line of march for the woods. Seats had been arranged under the branches of a wide-spreading oak, and the , congregation were addressed by their Pastor, the . gey. Charlea Small, and the doctrine of baptism thoroughly explained. Tents hod been erected near the shore, and preparations made for the can? didates, who -were marched from the church to the shore, and arranged in a hollow square on the bea. h. Their Pastor addressed them on the public profession they were about to make, and stated that they bad chosen this secluded spot in order to be apart from the rude and ungodly who might otherwise gather to mock them. After a prayer he went down into the water, and tho candidatos were led to bim by his assistants, and were each of them immersed. An old patriarch whose hair was of tho same color as bis gown, led the van, and some young girls brought np the rear. There were forty-six baptized, fifteen males, and thirty-one females-most of them young in years. The utmost order was preserved and the arrange? ments made for the comfort of the immersed were satisfactory. A large crowd gathered on the banks and on the steamer, to witness the spectacle, and while the candidates were going down into the water, they sang "Happy Day," and other old church tunes. The ceremony occupied one hour, and the falling tide intimating pretty strong? ly that the time waa up, tho party re turned to the steamer, which loosed from ber moorings and sped swiftly back to the city. The Calvary Church worship at Bonum's Hall, John street, and are under the charge of the Bev. Charles Small, formerly the body servant of Bishop GADSDEN. MATOB'S COURT, May 25_Maria Richardson, a woman of color, who had a lot of hogs on her pre? mises, was ordered to get clear of them in foity eigbt hours, or the officers would clear them out for ber. A man who bad been doing business as a junk shop keeper without license, and bad gone largely into the purchase of city gratings, and who was al?o brought np for lying down drunk in the street, was fined $20. Two men, dealers in "goot goots," having bad a dispute about "monish," and passed some compli? mentary expressions between them, which they concluded with a thriUing exhibition of sticks and bricks, were arraigned for disturbing the quiet of j the street and fined $5 eich, the payment of which scorned to excite as many contortions of the coun? tenance as would be caused by the drawing out of | the soundest and most useful jaw tooth. Richard Jenkins, a very small black boy, who stole a silver waiter and sold it to a keeper of a junk shop, was locked np for ten days. A person was fined $20 for not removing filth from his premises, and advised to remedy it promptly. The following extracts from Special Order No. 54 will prove of interest to our readers, aa they embrace subjeots that have attracted the attention of the community for some time. The vexed question of the street cars is now definitely Bot? tled, and we are happy to state that Dir. 8. G. SMITH will be released to-day: Headquarter* Second Military District, i CHARLESTON, & G., May 26,1M7. J [SPECIAL OBDEB No. 54.] ****** IL The testimony in the case of the Beveral parties arrested and held in custody, charged with participating in riotous and disorderly conduct in the Btreets and street cars having been forwarded to these headquarters, with the recommendations of the Provost Marshal of Charleston, and the ac? tion of the Post Commander upon the same, it is ordered that the proceedings be, and they are hereby approved. Daniel Eckhard, 8idney Mc? Guire, John Greene, Wm. Price, and Morris Smith, will be discharged. In the ca."-- o of Wm. Arthur, in view of the period of bis confinement awaiting trial, and the general good conduct of the colored population, in trusting to the action of the authorities for the recognition and enforcement of their rights and privileges, it is believed that tho ends of justice do not require the further prosecution of the offender, and he will be released. In the cases of Wm. Huger and John F. Stewart, charged with resisting and attacking the officers of the police in the performance of their dutie-; throwing missiles at the cara, and inciting others to riotous conduct, charges will be preferred against them, and sent to a Military Commission for trial ********* UL The testimony in the case of S. CALHOUN SMITH, of Charleston, supports the charge that, I on tho 27th of April, ho maliciously out and muti? lated the Garrison Flag which had been loaned to the Charleston Hook and Ladder Company to de? corate their Truck for a parade. Indeed, the only circumstance in favor of the accused is his own acknowledgement of guilt, coupled with an avowal that the act was done in a moment of undue ex I citement, and an expression of sincere contrition for the offence. A petition for the pardon of Surra, addressed to the Commanding General, has been received and considered with the respectful attention due to the representation of the prominent and iniuential citizens who have signed it. They affirm that the offence for which he is confined receives no coun? tenance in the community, and that the petition? ers, in common with all good citizens, condemn it. I he said petition having been referred to Brevet Brigadier-General H. B. Curz, U. S. A., com? manding the Poet of Charleston, has been retum I ed with the depositions, proof and papers, and a recommendation that the accused be released I from confinement and discharged from custody. It appearing that the further punishment of the ! aocused is not necessary as an example; and that the confinement he has already undergone, added to the general condemnation of the community, will sufficiently admonish bim of the consequence of misconduct; it is ordere! that be be dis? charged. ********* By command of Maj. Gen'l IX E. SICKLES. [Signed] J. W. CLOUS, Capt 38 th Inf ty, A. D. C. and A. A. A. Gen'l. INQUIRE WrrarN.-The mouth is like a house to let.
