FRIDAY MOItNTNG, APRIL 26, 1867. LOCAIS MALTERS. .-' . fe 9 .? ' 1 To Correspondents. We are continually receiving communications on political and other matters from persons who do Lot attach their proper names to tho articles sen*; r. vi we take this occasion of repeating that nothing cnn he published in TUE DAILY NEWS without being indorsed by some responsible individual. Tm: BATHING HOUSE.-Now that we have had a taste of tho forthcoming wann weather, it is really pleasing to observo by our paper this mern ii:g, that -Mr. P. KILROY will open the Battery Ba? thing House on May tho first, and wo refer our readers with pleasuro to his advertisement. TJLXFA LIME!-We invite attention to tho adver? tisement of Messrs. OLNEY <fc Co., who offer to the p.tblic a large supply of Kmc, plaster, brick, tiles and building material. Mechanics, builders, or contractors will find it to their interest to give tl:em a call. AT THE 21st Anniversary Meeting of tho South Carolina Masonic Benevolent Society, heh1- at Ma Bonic Hall, on Thursday evening, April 25th, 1S67, tho following Brethren wero elected for tho en? suing year: Bro. J. CORBY, President. Bro. A. LINDSTROM, vice-President. Bro. E. THAYER, Treasurer. Bro. W. A. WILSON, Socrotary. Bro. GEO. P. WOOD, Steward. I. O. O. F.-To-day will be celebrated as a day of thanksgiving and prayer by tho different lod?es of this Order throughout the Uidte 1 States, and the members connected with th? most excellont fra? ternity in onr city will observe the day with partic lar respect. They will assemble 'Ins evening at the Odd Fellows' Hall, and, after appropriate exor? cises, an addi ess will be deliver? 3 by P. ?. Master R. S. DURYEA, which we are satisfied will afford pleasuro and instruction to the many who feel a deep inter?s;', in this charitable order. GEOLOGICAL LECTURES FOR YOUNG LADLES.-The first of the series of lectures promised by Prof. F. S. HOLMES, came off last evening, at the Charles? ton College, and was attended by some hundred or more young ladies, who compose his class. The Professor spoke in his usual happy style, in ?tractive and highly entertaining to ah*. Tho course, of which this is tb G first, promises to be a treat rarely offered in this city. The Pro? fessor announced that the next lecture will tako place on Thursday evening next, instead of Wed ~r nesday, as previously arranged. CLOTHING.-That man "wants but Little here bolow," is a positive certainty, and Charleston is the fortunate possessor of that "LITTLE" who can supply the wants of both men and boys. We re? fer to the large clothing establishment of Messrs. GEO. LIITLE & Co., No. 213 King street, in Victoria R inge. These gentlemen have a complete stock of every article in their line, and offer inducements to their patrons and the public that have rarely been equalled. All persons who have not pur? chased their summer outfit should give them a call, for they will be easily suited, and will have no difficulty in making a selection from the stock be? fore them. THE WEATHER.-For some time past sweet April had not shed her tears, and the consequence is that the earth had become dry, and tho city dusty. But on yesterday morninr a sweet and steady rain was met by the earliest riflers, which continued for a great portion of the forenoon; and while it laid the dust and rendered riding in the street cars perfectly agreeable, it did immense benefit to tho different farms and gardens around, improving doubtlessly the alroady largo supply of early vege? tables, &c. The great fear, seems now to bo that to-morrow may-Tte rainy "and destroy delightful an ticipations-of enjoyment'at the firemen's parade; ' hut from present indication we are led to believe that tho day will be a delightful one. THE PENITENTIARY.-Since tho inauguration : of this enterprise considerable anxiety has been inanifested^ by the; peopleat . ?argento learn .the progress bf the" work. The papers haye, from time to time, brought the sabject before tho pub? lic, but it has only been recently that any definite information has been obtained concerning either the budding or its proposed inmates. One of our exchanges says that tho convicts at tho State Peni? tentiary aro to be clad in particular costume, and divided into working gangs, who will be kept con? stantly under guard by day and under bolt at night. j Ti icy will commence operations .about the first of May. There will then he a pretty general jail delivery, which will relieve the State of mach expense, and the unfortunate convicts will bo re? lieved from the horrors ol dungeon lite. THE FrREMEH's-PARADE.--To-mprTOw is a bright day in our city calendar, 'and one eagerly antici? pated not only by every gallant fireman, but by the fair sex, who are almost as enthusiastic in the cause, if .the decorations of the different machines aro any criterion. The 27th. of April'is to every fireman what the 4th of July was to the amateur soldiery of "yo olden time," when at the break of day they hurriedly marched to the/Battery and ; shewed .their patriotism by firing a. fen de joie.. ? .... ? Tho militia, who wore wont to indulge in these cisplays, aro dofunct, and their swords aro idle, hut the enthusiasm is still the same; and they Tushed, into the Firo Department, .in order to have some outlet for their animal spirits. Few oities can boast of a more efficient department, and "the day they celebrate" is marked by nono of those scenes of riot that have oe our red in other and larger places. Since' the introduction of steam it has been found necessary to chango tho hour oitfie parado, and the whob day is now consumed in the per? formances. The. Charleston Fire Department is so well known that their aimtveisary "rarely"'passes ?without tho pleasure of receiving :'some visiting company. On the present occasion'the Flor nee Pire Company will visit Charleston to participate in the performances of the day'. This Company have the engine formerly owned by the ?Etna Cotn ^p any, and its re-appear an co on its old arena will be hailed with delight by the ?tnas. Preparations have already been made for tho day, and the plat? form in Broad street, and the activity to be ob? served in the engine houses, show th it the inter? est has not diminished, and this anniversary will he equal if not superior to any of its predecessors. JMAIOR'S COURT, 'April 25.-The docket to-day ?was very meagre and devoid ol' interest, there be? ing but two prisoners before his Honor. A junk shop keeper, who had purchased some scrap iron from boys, contrary to ordinance, was fined $20, and a sailor picked up ia the street, helplessly druftk, was fined $5. ^ PROVOST COURT.-James Oscar and David Ed? monds wero lound guilty of breaking into a con? tine tor's car and /Bteal?ng a revolver. M., and thc jurors answered to their names. The case of the State vs. DOMINIC CASEV, larceny ?was called. The prisoner was charged with hav? ing stolen twenty-one piccc3 of iron flanges from Hr. H. H. HICKS, said iron belonging to a house that he was erecting. CASEY had been releaser! on his own recognizance, and had absconded. No defence was made, and tho prisoner was found guilty of petit larceny. Tho Stato vs. Jas. Harris, or Harrison, was then taken up. ARTHUR P. LLMNG, Esq., appearing for the defence. This case was fully mentioned in tho NEWS at the time of the arrest, which occurred on thc 21st i pf February. Mr. KENNY, who resided in Green bill street, near tho water, bad been robbed of an iron chest, containing a largo amount in spccio, be? sides greenbacks, State bills aud Confed?rate money, also many papers of great value Ho was tho first witness for the prosecution, and lus testi? mony proved that his houso was entered on tho night of tho 20th, by a board being placed from the ground to the piazza, and the window being wrenched open, a chair was placed on tho ground and the chest handed out to some party who stood on the chair to rcccivo it. In tho morning tho board was found leaning against the piazza, out tho chair and chest wero gone, The family were not disturbed by thc noise and wer? only rwaro of their loss in the morning. Lieutenant HENDRICKS, of tho detectivo force? testified to the arrest, having been informed tho next morning of tho facts by Mr. KENNEY. Ho immediately notified his officers, appointing two to follow the trail; but ail were empowered to bo on the look-out. A clue was soon found, and on examination tho suspected parties wore arrested, and proved to bo participants in the robbery. They were found at a dance in Cannon street, and when arrested were dressed in gorgeous array. They gave thoir names as Harris and Sbidell, and when carried to tthe office, Shidell turned State's ovidenco. On soarching them, pocket-books were found on each-that on Harris containing S75 in gold, 75 cents in silver, and $31 in bills.. Officer HEIDT deposed that ho obtained a clue, and by following it up discovered Harris and Shedoll in a dance houso in Cannon street. He climbed over tho fence and arrested them in the house. From tho ovidenco furnished by Shedell, Liout. HENDRICKS and himself went to a house at tlu corner of King a;id Lamboll streets, occupied by Nolaon Berwick, and found tho chest in an old woll and the papers and Confederate monoy in the privy. They have never boen able to catch Berwick, as he left the city immediately aflor tho robbery. John Shedell substantiated this testimony, and >aid that bo had gone to Berwick's house on the night of tho 20th to pay a visit, and laiow nothing of the robbery. About 12 he.heard Berwick and Harris go out, and followed them to the Mr. KENNY'S honse, and saw Harris enter and hand tho chest to Borwick. He did not participate in tho robbery, and was given a portion of tho spoils merely as hush money. Tho chest was broken open with an axo in Berwick's yard ; and after the contents were taken out, it was thrown into the Did well, and the papers into the privy. He went out with Harris and Berwick to several stores, and purchased clothing, &c; left Eerwick, and went with Harris to the bail. He identified tho papers, pocket books, and a knife that had been [bund in Harris' pocket. ISADORE LEWIS identified both Shedell and Han-is, and testified to soiling thom clothes and changing a $100 bOl for Harris. This closed the testimony for the prosecution, and none appearing for the defence, the Attor? ney-General briefly reviewed tho case, and stated that he would waive the indictment for burglary md simply request a verdict of larceny, as that crime could bo punished by the State laws. ARTHUR P. LININO, Esq., replied for tho defence, and presented the case in its most favorable light to the consideration of the jury. Judge MUNRO, in a few words, charged the jury, who, without leaving the box, returned a verdict in accordance with his charge-Guilty of Grand Lar? ceny. The State vs. JOHN PENDERS, JAS. SMITH and THOS. RTLET, for boarding a vessel and not wearing a, license, was called. R. W. SEVMOUR, Esq., for thc defence. A sealed verdict was loft by the jury. UNITED STATES Crnourr COURT-Hon. GEO. S. BRYAN presiding.-Messrs. W. B. WILSON, Tn os. E. DUDLEY, RICHARD B. CARPENTER, and D. G. MCINTOSH, wera admitted to practice in the Courts of the United States for South Carolina. Mr. M. W. GARY was admitted as Proctor on motion of Sen. JAS. CONNER. Tho United States vs. W. G. VARDELL, fora violation of the Internal Revenue laws, regarding stamps, was tried, and it appearing that Mr. VAR DELL had neglected to affix the stamps required by law on certain receipts, a verdict o? guilty wis rendered, and the penalties duo this violation (vere enforced. The United States vs. JNO. D. JOHNSON-Em? bezzlement. It was ordered that a bench-warrant ?JG issued to arrest the said JOHNSON to answer in the said Court. The United States vs. W. H. KIDD & Co.-Vio? lation of tho Internal Revenuo Laws, as distiller, ?vas called, but the Court adjourned when tho wit? less for the prosecution had concluded. Tho Hon. RICHARD BUSTEED, Unitod States Tudge for Alabama, was present and took a soat vi th Judge BESAN. DISTRICT C?URT POE BERKLEY DISTRICT-Hon. F. D. RICHARDSON presiding.-Tho State cs. Cloe iltas Mary Macfiold, Poggy Macfiold and Carolina Davis-Larceny and receiving stolen goods. The prisoners plead guilty, but tho two last having jem in confinement for some time, were roleased. An appeal was taken by R. W. SEYMOUR, Esq., in ? e case of Fred. Mullen or Mullhausen, found rnilty of Larceny and receiving stolon goods. Wednesday has been appointed to call the Con ingent Docket.
