CHANGE OF RAILROAD STATIONS.-The North? eastern Bailroad Company bavd discontinued the two stations formerly kuown as Strawberry and Gaillards, and have substituted one which will be called Oakley. MUBBAY, bo favorably known to au tim travening pub?To before the war, as master in'tho' Old and favorite line of New York steamships. -o WHITEWASHING. -As this is tho time of year when one desires to renovate tho interior of his d wolling as well os to improvo the appearance of his fencos and outhouses, we place before our readers a most excellent recipe for mixing white? wash: "Take a clean, water-tight barrel, or other suitable cask, and put into it a half bushel of lime. ' Slack it by pouring water over it, boiling hot, and in sufficient quantity to cover it five inches deep,, and stir it in water, and add two pounds of sul? phate of zinc and one of common salt.. These will cause the wash to harden, and prevent its crack? ing, which gives on unseemly appearance to the work. If desirable, a beautiful cream color may be -added to the above wash, by adding three pounds of yellow ochre; or a good pearl or lead color, %y adding lamp, vine or ivory block. For. J fiwm color, add four pounds of amber, Turkish br American-the latter is the cheapest-one pound ot Indian red, and one pound common lamp-black. MAYOR'S COURT-April 24.-James Gaillard, a colored inexperienced youth, to whom was given a five dollar bill, by one J. Lopez, that he might take ton cents out of it to pay himself fer o job, and who went to change the bill, but never came bock, and who whon he w*s caught, admitted he hod bought a pair of shoes with part of the money, was locked up for ten days, which will save so much wear,of his sole loather., . .' Julia Smoke, a colored woman who .vas brought to the Guard House in a cart, and did not make' her appearance before bis honor, was accused by a girl named Elvira, of steal? ing a few days ago. a sum of money from out the mattress of the p'resecatrix and ?bf bowing it ont, and, also of visiting her room en Tuesday night and attempting to carry off a bundle of clothes, but being detected and threatened with the police, laid the apparel on the bed, and finish? ed the evenings performance by raising the window, which wos near thirty feet high, and making on extraordinary leap to the ground; AB there appa? rently were no bones broken, it is rational to sup? pose that her head struck first. His Honor decided that if she was really hurt she should be sent to the hospital, but if uninjured she should be locked np fdr ten days. Two or three cases of determined opposition to the present temperance agitation which is perva? ding the Eastern States were brought up, and dis? cussed, with his honor, who to judge by his manner seemed to hayethe best of the argument. COURT OF GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMMON PLEAS-Judge MUNROE presiding.-The Court was opened at the usual hour, and the Jury answering to their names, the case of the State vs. HELENA PLODGER, nee SOUTH, for receiving etolen goods, was called, JOHN PHILLIPS, Esq., appearing for the defence. After some challenges the Jury were organized and the witnesses were examined. From their testimony it appeared that shortly after the close o? the war some Cotton was stolon from the plan? tation of Mr. MUIRHEAD, in Christ Church Pariah, which was subsequently found ho be in the posses? sion of .HELENA PLODGER, then SMITH, who kept a store at the corner of Concord and March streets. The prosecution went to prove that the Cotton was received^ knowing it to be stolen, and was purchased from irresponsible parties, but the de? fence argued that when tho Cotton was rafted tc the city by the negroes it was at that time whei; no questions were asked os to the ownership, bul barg?iii3 were made by every one, especially re gardmg Cotton. The Judge briefly summed up tho leading points and charged tho Jury, who, without leaving theil scats, returned a verdict of not guilty, and th< prisoner was disgorged. SOMETHESO NEW.-Tho citizens of this staid old town wero somewhat startled yesterday after ternoon, to observe a high buggy rapidly moving down the street boh ind four pair of fine horses. The four-in-hand te tm attracted considerable at? tention, and was supposed by some uncivilized heathens to be the forerunner of a circus, but the warheads marvelled and thought of tho time when the Jockey club was in its glory, and a four-in hand not such a rare sight. Wo congratulate the for? tunate possessor on his acquisition, and trust that bis fancy terni will inlroduco new lifo among us, if it does not produce a revolution in tho present style of vehicles, but until this does taite place, he will continue to be thu centre of attraction. SOUTHERN LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY.-The ne? cessity for insuring property has long boon known but it is only recently that the principle of extend? ing this insurance to the life of tho party was adopted. Since that time numerous companies have been formed for this purpose, and the patron? age of the public proves that they have established themselves firmly in their confidence. In our own city several companies have opened offices and the agents proffer their services to the people. Among these we would direct attention to tho Southern Life Insurance Company. Few corporations can show a more healthy exhibit of their assets and liabilities than is presented in their advertisement in another column, and as the principal object is to be insured in a strong and good company, wo would advise those wishing to insure to apply to Mr. W. POMOLOGY.-There ore few cities without a sub? urban population, who, apart from the smoke, dust and noise of the streets, can employ their time in raisin j the " kindly fruits of tho earth." This " rus in urbe" is ono of the principal charms of a large city, and tho farms that aro on the outskirts are both a sourc 3 of profit to tho own or, and of pleasure to the citizen. Charleston Neck was once composed wholly of these farms, but as the property increased in value it was cut up into buUdhvg lots, and the farmers moved furthezyinto the country. At present, Line street is the boundary of the city proper, but be? yond that, the cultivated lands commence, and thc farms are of all sizes, from a few acres to a young plantadon. The completion of the street railroad to the hoad of Butledge street, enabled many persons to visit these farms, and from the time thc first strawber? ry was seen above ground there has beon a con? stant stream of customers. NUNAN'S farm, on the street of the same namo has long been the rendezvous for epic?rea, and tho roputation of his early strawberries extends from Charleston to tho Hub. They have been shipped by every steamor, yet the supply eeems inexhaustible, and promises to continue during the summer. To those inter? ested in agrioulture .'1 visit to NTTNAN'S farm would both please and interest ; for his timo is not devo? ted to strawberries, but is divided between the dif? ferent products to be found on a well conducted farm. To speak of the early peas, cabbages, toma? toes, oranges, grapes, and the combination of fruita, flowers and vegetables that grow in luxuri? ance on this spot, would be an impossibility, and we advise all who wish to spend a few hours pleas? antly to pay Mr. NUNAN a visit-certainly before the strawberry season is over. Evory thing must be dono in a hurry, fi ora reconstruction down, without making any allow? ances whatever. Somo people would grumble if they ware in Paradise, "Sich, however, says SAM SLIOK, i- nater." We havo recently heard several, yes divers com olaints alleged against the Greenville and Colum? bia Railroad in respect to transportation of freight. New, if thoHo who make these complaints under? stood the peculiar difficulties under which this road labors at the present, and has for sometime, they would, likely, bo more indulgent. The Greenville and Columbia Bailroad bas, to our knowledge, only about thirty-five oars for transportation of freight. They have been receiv? ing on an average per day for months thirty car loads of freight from the South Carolina Bailroad alone, also freight frcm the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad, besides local freight from tho city. It is impossible for the agent at Columbia to have on hand, at any time, moro than fifteen cars, for some must always bb on the road. It will be seen, theroforo, by any reasonable mau that it is a matter of impossibility for the agent to send off the freight at once wbon he receives far more "than he has cars for transportation. Hence the cause of delay. We know tho agent (Mr. B. H. WALTON). Ho is an obliging, stirring man, and has done evory thing in his power-to fa? cilitate the transportation of freight. Undor his charge are three dorks, who labor assiduously and diligently from 6 A. M. until 9 P. M. Now what more can be done ?
