Next there was a play, "Thc Ahxandrines, or Corporal Puflke in Presdeii." Next, "Thirty-three Minutes in Granc berg," or "Tho Half Way." Dancing concluded tho festivities of the ovoning. MIKELL, Esq., for the defence. After hearing the case the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. THE NEW BANE PROPOSED FOR CHARLESTON. ? The following paragraph, from tho Boston Post . of the 18th, will be read with interest : A subscription book for a National Bank in Charleston, S. C., has been opened at the office of J. W. Davis, Banker, No. 25 State street. The prospectus says the small bank capital there of five hundred thousand dollars is found to be in? adequate. . Capital is so much needed that money easily commands eighteen per cent, per annum, the laws against usury having been abolished in that State. The two banks in operation in Charles? ton have paid a dividend of twenty-four per cent, on' their capital from the profits of the last year. The Stay Law passed by the Legislature has "boon pronounced unconstitutional by the highest judicial authority; tho samo is null and void, and debts can be.enforced now in the same manner as formerly. The citizens of Charleston have sub? scribed for five hundred and sixty-six shares, oqual to fifty-six thousand six nundrod dollars, to the proposed bank. This subscription can easily be raised to one hundred thousand dollars, as it is ascertained that the bank can be put into opera? tion. The citizens Gf Charleston, individually as v, eil as the banks, having suffered greatly in their fortunes by the results of tho war, have not sufficient funds to enable them to subscribe the full amount of tho capital stock of the proposed bank, and therefore capital from abroad has to be sought for. The proposed capital is three hun-' dred thousand dollars, divided into three thou? sand shares, of one hundred dollars each. SALE OF KALMIA MILLS.-The salo of this valua? ble property takes place to-day at Lt A. M., at the Old Exchange. These nulls Bftve been in course of erection for some time, and they are now able to receive the machinery and other appurtenances ^necessary to commence operations. The grounds belonging to the company amount to 4259 acres, and are situated immediately on the South Caroli? na Railroad, extending from near the Gram te ville Depot to within one mile of the 2.-th Paper Mill, and eight miles of the city of Augusta, Georgia, on the waters of Big Horse Creek. The Cotton Factory (within one hundred feet of the railroad) is a two story brick building, one hundred and four (104) feet wide by two hunched and twenty-seven (227) feet long, designed to contain ton thousand spindles and three hundred and twenty looms, and is four-fifths completed. There are on the land sexenty-eight neat and commodious cottages for operatives, completed and in course of erection ; a first-class steam saw mill in complete working order ; a good grist mill ; a carpenter shop with steam engine and boiler ; planing machine, tools, &c; blacksmith shop, with complete set of tools ; machine shop, with steam engine and boiler, lathe, drill press, Ac The machinery, water power, and all the acces? sories o' the property are such as to adapt it tor first-class cotton and paper factories, and the sale should command the attention of capitalists, as the-terms are mod?rate and the enterprise, when. completed, will be a paying success. There is now" on the land sawed lumber sufficient to complete all the buildings; the dam and other appurtenances j ^3are four-fifths completed, and the purchaser would have no difficulty in at once commencing Opera? tions. MAYOB'S COURT, April 22.-Edward Hartshorn, a colored seaman, who had gone on board' of ihe steamer Josephine on Friday night to sleep with a friend, and when ho went off in the morning took the mattress with him as a kind of travelling com? panion, but having been followed by two of the hands of tho boat, who with sound argument and an unsound hatchet, convinced him that he bad better give up th<? article, was discharged, the Mayor thinking that ibo two days' confinement he had received was sufficient punishment, and as the parties had got back their bedding. John Anderson, a drinking darkey, who cursed and swore in the srroets, and "allowed" chat B?X policemen couldn't take him, bnt withdrew the ex? pression in open court, and admitted that he was slightly under the influence of hquor, from tne fact of having eaten no breakfast, was fined *~, Nicholas Boag, a colored man, who got drunk, and knocked at a door so loudly that nobody came to let him in, but a policeman stepped up to "carry him out," was made to pay $2 for annoying the neighbors. A. Bollinger, a very black man, who hadn't on his Sunday suit, and who was found lying in a shady part of the street, so as to avoid the influ? ence of the moon, was fined $5. ' Sam Clark, a very little and quito intelligent colored boy, was fined $2 for throwing bricks in the street. . . The present hard times, has compelled some of that portion of tho colored population "vot vont York," to go into the -'grab game," which is to loaf in parts of tho city where tho passers-by are not numerous, and to snatch from thc hands of ladies and children their purses, reticules, &c., and as Mr. Ben. Wilson engaged liimself on Saturday afternoon in that pleasant pastime, and made $LG2 out of. a little girl, ho was introduced to the Court by Lieut. HENTT^KS, and witnesses of bis own color proved the fact on him so conclusively that he was sentenced to ten days' imprisonment, or tho case be sent to a magistrate. Peter Morris, a particularly dark and dirty youth, who had lent out Iiis hat and jacket to a friend, but who had stolen a pair of pantaloons from a lady who keeps thoao things for the benefit of gen? tlemen, was locked up for ten days. Aman of great nervousness', who had got high, and consequently my giddy, was fined ?5 for fal jng in the street. j r WE ABE indebted to Mr. YOGLEB for copies of the Bound Table and New York Slaa? There will be a Queen of Love, Beauty and Floweri, and the coronation of each will be in a different language. The first in French, tho second in German, and tho third in flowery English. The young ladies of this school and then.* talented preceptors deservo great credit for theil- efforts to celebrate May day as in Auld Lang Syne. Mr. ADAMS, Pastor of the Circular Church, delivered an eloquent and impressive discourse before the Association, in the Citadel Square Baptist Church. The sermon showed great ability on the part of the minister, and we predict for him a successful ministry in our community. ? This evening the Union Prayer Meeting, under the auspices of the Association, will be held, as usual, in Trinity Church; services to commence at 8 o'clock.
