MAYOR'S COURT, April 10.-Robert, a colored boy, who took half of a sausage from a vender in the market, by way of a taste, was fined $2 for his fa? miliarity. A man with a very black eye, who had been ar? rested at the request of a runner of a sailor board? ing house, was discharged at his own request. A person, who was indecently drunk, was fined $5 as a lesson. A musician of talent, who is *.o fond of a horn that ho swallows it instead of playing upon it, was fined $5 so os to bring a few of tbe notes out of him. SHAKESPEARIAN READINGS.-AS a poet historian and drama List SHAKESPEARE has few superiors, and a careful perusal of his works always adds some item to the store of knowledge. In other cities readings from his plays are quite popular and are . always well attended. These entertainments arc comparatively rare in this city, and their introduc? tion at the present time proves that literary pur? suits were not entirely abandoned during the war, and the Bard of Avon still exercises his potent sway. ACCIDENTAL SHOOTLNCL-A distressing accident occurred yesterday morning, which resulted in the serious wounding of Richard Pepper, colored. Mr. JOHN- APPLE,- who keeps a store at tho forner. of-, King street * and- Burns'. Lane, had purchased 'a number, of old guns and muskets, with the inten? tion of selling them again. These gun s [were lying on his counter,'and wero being' examined by several customers, when his lituie son, while hand? ling' them, accidentally discharged one, the - ball entering Pepper's thigh, near the hip, arid passing through' the leg. The wounded man was taken to ^ the Roper Hospital, where he received every atten .' ti on. On dressing, and probing tho wound several pieces of bone wore .taken out, but: it is not sup? posed to bo necessarily mortal. The mus"ket which was discharged waa supposed to be unloaded, and the accident-is deplored hy Mx. APPLE, as he hod examined the guns and was" not aware that any were in a dangerous condition. FREEMAN, of New York, the general agent: r - - -o OUR PUBLIC ROADS.-AU persons who have re? cently driven o ?er either the King or tho Meeting street roads have a painful remembrance-of the agonizing jolting thai, was inflicted upon the un? happy traveller, and will be pleased to learn that efforts are being made to relay a portion of the road in a substantial manner! The Commission? ers of Public Roads have advertised for propo? sals to furnish from three to five hundred thousand feet of three inch plank eighteen feet in length and of the best quality, and to be delivered ? at state? inf eiwals1 along- the main road :from the city limits to the Six Mile'-House. A resolution was recently offered in Council by Alderman GERDTS that the City Engineer bo em powered to furnish estimates for making a shell or plank road in tho city limits. These were pre? sented to Council at tho last meeting, but in con? sequence of tho emptiness of the treasury no ac? tion was taken, and tho report was received as in? formation. Mr. BAEBOT'S report stated tho differ? ence between the two roads, and proved that the annual expense of repairing a shell road v. .>uld be far less than a plank road, as tho repairs to the former only added strength and solidify to the road-bed. \\ It is evident that tho city can take no steps in the matter at present, but as their finances be? come improved, it will be necessary to pay some attention to these roads, as theil* present condi? tion is shocking. A plank road will be the least expensive, but it does not possess sufficient dura oility to recommend it forgeneial use, and it is constantly requiring repairs. The best policy would be for the Commissioners of Roads and the city authoritien to unite on tho same plan of rood and thus moke a public drive that will be an ornament to the city. II operations are com? menced at once, the entire route can be finished Lefore next year, but if delayed until the summer, when dirt digging is prohibited, the work will be pecessarily protracted. j .-TTHX GEBMAN BBUDI?BLIOBB BUND -will give a musical and theatrical entertainment this* evening, at their Hall in Bong, opposite Clifford street. We all remember the enthusiasm which greeted this tuno, and the rousing cheers which wore given when tho chorus, "Hurrah for thc homespun dresses the Southern ladies wear, was sung. With the cause homespun went up, and the two prevailJng ideas were thon calico and reconstruction, both of which havo been liberally furnished since the crash. Messrs. STOLL, WEBB & Co., knowing that the demand for ca';co is never satiated, have offered to their lady customers 3000 yards at 12Jc. lt is only slightly damaged, and that can easily wash out. This remark may appear rather harsh, coming from one of the maligned sex, but those who have once gloried in the possession of a new suit can hardly deny tho assertion. Messrs.
