The team belonged to Mr. Prank Mott, son of Col. Mott, and was being driven along an open road from Dover to Mr. M.*B plantation, a short distance off. Only the front portion of the '"log wagon"-was being used. A man a short dis? tance od' saw the occurrence. , Everything about the'wagon dropped instantaneously with the flash. At last accounts he had not boon arrested, but it was not believed he would attempt to escape from the law.-Macon Tt?egraplu A HOMICIDE.-Saturday afternoon last, at about 4 o'clock, the usual quiet of our city was broken by a report of a pistol, and the subsequent death of a young colored woman, named Anna Gardner, well known in the community, as a girl of easy virtue. This tragedy occurred upon Bay street, in the office occupied by Mr. It. Hopkins. The ac? counts of tho transaction aro so conflicting, and the surmises growing out of it so various in their; -nature, that without"-attempting to give the par? ticulars, we will simt?y-stateHbal; the said colored ; woman, Anna Gardner;' m?trher^de?thlrom' a pis-1 , tod shot, fired by Mr. Hopkins, in the room of the " latter.". She; aft?? being wounded, rushed out on ; the sidewalk" on Bay street, where, she fell, and j died almost instantly. The ball penetrated her left breast, and death ensued from internal hemor? rhage. -'-.. - - ? '?'?' i . We purposely relrain from entering into afurther detail of thia sad case, otherwise than stating that, according to the statement of the only 'witness present when the shooting took place, that, it was accidental sd far as" the woman was concerned, the., witness, Alexander Haidee (colored), being the party for whom the ball was intended, and who bad made an assault on Mr. Hopkins in hts own office. Both parties were arrested, and an exami? nation, which will be held to-day, will elicit all the facta in the case.-Sav. Republican. MEETING OF THE "SOUTHERN PRESS ASSOCIA? TION."-In the official proceedings of Council on Eridoy . night last, we Botice that- the following I preamble and - resolutions, offered by Alderman , Cox, were adopted': "":' [.yj.j j Il appearing, .from notice in the press of this : city , and other cities South; that' the' Southern I Press Association will hold its next annual meet? ing in Atlanta,on the third Wednesday, being'the ' 17th'day, of the present month; be it therefore ;-:' Resolved, .That His Honor ine. WResolted', That the proposed meeting ol' the - - Southern Press Association in this cit y is highly gratifying to its civil authorities, as they feel ? as? sured it is to: all rin teres ted ini the. prosperity of. Atlanta, and in that of the Southern press. . Wo are gratified in noticing the foregoing action >' of our City Conned, andean assure our .brethren ' bf tri? press of the South that every arrangement calculated to make thoir stay in this city agreeable I will be . made, We trust that every paper in tho South will bo represented in the meeting. The varied interests of. the press, both daily and week? ly, absolutely demand that they' should counsel . together.-Attona Intelligencer. The Athens Banner says: "Mr. S. W. ' REMOVAL OF THE DISABILITIES OF SOUTHERN PoLrnciAJ'S.-Numerous applications have been made to Congress for tho passage of laws relieving certain-of the loading politicians of the South who took part in the rebellion, in order that they may more efficiently (as-they say) support the recon? struction act of Congress. Tuns ?ar.V?ry properly, jj i?o favorable response has been made to this appli? cation, and we think we speak tho sentiments of many of the leading men in Congress when we say that-this,course will be .-persevered in until the persons whd'.ask tb beirolieved from tho dis? abilities incurred by. their treason shall prove by their conduct that they are entitled to stich - magnanimity, The : moment such proof is made clear we have no doubt (he action desired ' will follow. Why it should be insisted upon without such evidence passes our comprehen? sion. The ex-Confederate chieftain who is. really anxious to exhibit his fidelity to the country ana his willingness to assist in carrying out the act of . Congress, can make himself fir more influential by proclaiming that ho is not speaking for himself ; that he accepts, the penalties incurred by his re? bellion, but that be advises all others to obey the .? law ana to fulfil tho conditions of Congress. Such * an example would ' change" the indifference of thousands into enthusiasm, and would especially endear the man who sets it to his own people and 't?lfce Government itself. We have before fis now a letter from a loading . "Confederate," which breathes tho right sbint.' He advises a certain course, and says : "I "have, of course, no personal interest in" the' question, since I am manifestly ' within "the excluded class myself, and do not deem - my exclnsion a hardaidp in view of my past' folly, not to say ox\m&*-Wan1tingt?n Chronicle. """ " . JOSN CBTWAHAN' NEXT.-NOW that slavery-has been abolished,' the Radical anxiety to abolish' something'..etoo is taking definite shape in tho large meetings now held va California to advocate the banishment of Chinamen from that State. The complaint is that the Chinese compete with ' native laborers by offering to work cheaper; that " they send the money they make m California to China, and thot the mtroduction of a race so to? tally foreign to the laws, langtutge, religion and civilization of-(he country, is questionable polioy. The opposition, at present, is directed against the large and wealthy companies having agento who transport coolies to California and biro out their labor sad services; but the real oBjoction seems . to be that tbi* Chinese are coming in such-numbers, and their labor can bo ?secured at such low- rates, Lab ^?f,^T1 UASB ''dl0fe' ^ other Idnds of vanta and good workmen. 'Ibu anxiety to drive tho Chin?se ?rom California will bo heightened by tho.Tribune's announcement that -'ti. o ito publican party, from the St. John to tho Pacific, is a unit for universal liberty and im? partial aullragc, regardless of caste, race or c lor." Thia gives the elective franchise to the Chin JSO as well as the colored man; and when the later ti "All 1 wights to All" manifesto reaches Calif ora a it ia highly probable that.'the Chinese will be immedi? ately requested to stand, not on the order of their going, but to go at once. On tho other hand, it is possible that Radicalism may suggest the policy of .'protecting" tho thousands' of Chinese already on | our shores, and that a now Chinese Bureau, with thousands of salaried officials, will he deemed im? peratively necessary. ' THE JEWS AN? TUE INSURANCE COMPANIES. -Tho Jews of Cincinnati have sent to their brethren in Now York the proceedings of a meeting of Israel- I ites held in that city on the 2d inst, to consider the action of several insuranco companies of this city who refused to grant policies to Jews. The following resolutions wero^adopted : "Whereas, It is known that the following in? surance companies, tho Manhattan, llanover, Miagara, Bepublio and Germania, of New York, thc last four constituting the Undei writer's Agency, havo recently issued instructions to their | agents not to insure tho property of Jews; and, whereas, such un order being opposed to the spirit of the age, and conceived m that of bigotry and fanaticism, wo deem it our duty to ourselves and uo-religionists to protest against such action of aaid companies, and to denounce it as unjust and illiberal, and which, if passed over in silence,'! might be construed as an acquiescence in such proscription; therefore, bo it : . "Resolved, That we will not insure in any of the o?ices which have adopted, or shall hereafter adopt, tho regulations mentioned above, nor will we mauro with any agenta for the above connia- ! nie?, if thc persons occupying these positions should also continue to be tho agenta for any com? pany or companies which may have adopted, or may hereafter adopt similar regulations, and that Ve "will exert all the infiaence we may respectively pouaeaa to induce others to pursue the same course we havo indicated for ouraelvos. ' "Resolved, That those of us who now have in? surance in the ?nices above designated, or in any other ?nices adopting a like policy, will, os soon as convenient, withdraw all connection therewith. "Resolved, That tho city papers be requested to publish these resolutions." Mr. John H. Law, general Cincinnati agent of tho Now York underwriters, publishes a card re? signing that position, in consequence of the action of the above companies in the exclusion of Jews. NOTICE TO THE RADICALS.-Be it known (and, if possible, behoved) to all the world, (tho Hon. Chas. Sumner included), that the Hon.
