THUBSDAY MOBNINO, AT It IL 4,1807. AGITATION. there is one thing which is repulsive to our pcoplo just now it is political Agitation. Wo have gone through so exhausting a strogglo tiltil wo liavo scarcely the energy for furthor contest. We have been so deceived in our cal culations, so disappointed in our hopes that wp have lost all fnith in adrico from any quarter. Our individual embarrassments aro so pressing I that wohavo neither tho time nor the temper to Iliink of public interests, and wo are tempt ed in utter despair lo confino ouiu- " s to the hard work of making our daily i.ead and leaving to Providonco to accomplish results which wo cannot anticipato. But tho issue which is upon us is ono which will notici usatone. Not only is thcro no safety in passivo submission but there is n? rest for us until that issuo is settled, Wo oro not permitted simply to eutfor, we aro forced to do. What in our condition ? wholo pop ulation has been mado voters and to them wo nro compelled in a few months to submit tho complete revolution of our politioal society. This privilege of voting is to them tho consum umtion of their freedom?there -not ono who docs not regard its exercise as tho final nnd triumphant proof that ho'has been made a freo . It is the powor by which he has been governed and he looks to it as the powor by which his further wants nro to ho supplied.! The more ignorant tho voter the moro import ance will be attached to tho privilogo which i? to guarantee his full equality with tho white man. Every colored oilizon of this Stato will vole, in him there is no apathy to - overcome, no despair to counteract, no need of party con trivance to stimulate. Ho is all hope ami energy and activity. He has interests which lia docs not fully comprehend and prejudices which it is not easy to overcome, and to-day, and from to-day on to tho end, thoro are and will be, busy, indefatigable, unscrupulous men; nclually at work to misrepresent theso inter ests, excite nnd misdirect theso prejudices. There is not an intelligent man in ine Slate, white or black, who docs not know that thO' while people of the State cannot be put in a condition of political inferiority without infin ite disturbance and terrible danger. Thcro is not ono whito or blnok who docs not know that such a condition, if over rr-vrhed, could not last, and would euro itself at tho cost of much suf fering to the whito race, but at the price of de struction to tho blaok. And there is not ono who docs not know that the only way to pre vent such a consummation is the earnest union of the whito vote with the intelligent and re spectable colored voto. How is that union to bo brought aboulT It uialLcrs not a straw whether men call thein SUllCft i.v.b?.?^ wi 'WueciTDtiiii, uc-l?DtIVUAI or Union Republicans; all mon can work to gether now who honestly desire to securo the adoption of a sound and healthy Stale Consti tution, who wish tolay the foundations wisely of that local legislation whiph is to determino our taxation, cnoourage education, govorn the re lations of daily life?in a word, protect life, liberty nnd properly. When we have restored tho State, there will bo time enough to decido what tho politics of tho Stato should be. Let all those who desire this earnestly go to work faithfully, and before very long they will find themselves working together. It i not our purjipsc, perhaps it is not our duty, to givo advice to tho colorad votera. ' ? yet they have not given us the opportunity, but u-o can speak to,the white voters of this eity. It <is perfectly clear that, with the'numerical majority of the colored vote, if it aots In com bined antagonism to you, it defeats you. That vote can be driven' into antagonism by injudi cious opposition, or by continued neglect. At present there ia every reason to believe 'that ' the better class of the colored volere do not de sire an unnecessary hostility,' They'know, as General Sicklks bo judiciously advised them, that their interests aro identical with ours, that I if thoy possess some, we possess others of those elements, tho combination-of which is necesga iry to their prosperity, and th?t, thewoMt.aoV visers they can have are those who would:sow tho seeds of auimosity between the races. Why not then at onoe proceed to the practi cal work of effecting that union 'as far' ae.lies [in our power? :,?:. j .. Let us do that work not in the spirit of buy ing and Belling, which' tho ^Northern'' press seems to consider tho only motive, powor of po litical action, but with the.'open, and resoluto determination to do justice to ail classes of Our' citi ions ; with tho manly avowal that hoivover we'may regret tho change, wo intend to use it,', i.f possible, for the advantage and prosperity, of the whole State, and with tho fixed purpose to preservo, an we are bound to do, in tho intcreBt of every man, white or black. In this Stale, that influ'enco which belongs to brains, character, and properly. .-.Better, for n* to .do this boldly and promptly than to allow malignant and pas-' al?nate men to appeal to selfishness, ignorance, and pr?judice in the manner indicated in the following editorial from the Ntraidt <?
