M. yesterday, occasioned by the burning of a chimney in George street. A few engines turned out, but the excitement was soon allayed by the china noy burning out, and the engines returned bootless home. -o TflE STREET RIOTERS.--The parties concerned in tho late attempt on the street cars have all been turned over to Lieutenant JOHNSTON, and the trial of the case will take place before him at 10 A. M. to-day, it having been postponed from yesterday in order to collect the necessary evidence. PEAS, GRAIN, ?fcc.-We invite attention to the advertisement of Messrs. R. THE AMERICAN FARMER.-We have received the April number Of this magazine from Mr. S. HART, the agent for the publishers, and find that it fully sustains its reputation as the oldest and best agri? cultural publication 5n the United States. The Farmer does not confine itself to agriculture, but is foll of useful information, and is an invaluable work for the Southern planter, and should be taken by all who wish to succeed in their op?ra? tions. GRAND CONCERT.-The music-loving portion of ) our community will be pleased to learn that Mr. OSWALD MEYER and his two sons, OTTO and JULIUS MEYER, will give an instrumental concert at the Turner Hall, No. 70 Bang street, between Broad and- Tradd, on Monday next, at 8 P. Messrs.-BAVENEL & Co., agents for the LEARY line of steamers, viz : the steamships Quaker C'dy, Saragossa and Grenada, have put down their freight on cotton to New York to ono dollar per bale, which will be the rate for either Upland or Sek Island Colton. This will be an im? portant benefit to tho ootton merchants, and will xnnch facilitate the trade between the two points. STEAMSHIP SEAGULL.-We regret to learn that Capt. DUTTON'S fine steamer tho Seagull, hada trifling accident to her; machinery on ber vbyago hence to Baltimore on the 30th, and has pnt into Fortress Monroe for repair. THROWING BEIGES.-On last Monday nighi,, as Policeman TROY was performing bis dnty as door sentinel in front, of tho Guard House, a brick was thrown at bim from tho other side of tho street, wi tb such force as to leave a portion of it adhering to tho jamb of tho door, against wbicb it struck, passing just over his bead. Had tho policeman boen so unfortunate as tD bave boon hit by this missile, bo would, no doubt, have been seriously, if not fatally injured. Tbe scoundrel who took this cowardly way to burt a most excellent man made bis escape so expeditiously that no trace could be discovered of ? him, though immediate search was made. SEWING MACHINES.-These aro now indispen? sable additions to a well regulated household and tho object is always to procure one that combines the modern improvements. OUR STEAM FLEET_Yesterday afternoon four steamships could be seen making their way up thc harbour, from the offing-and as they swept upon the full flood tide, they attracted the atten? tion of many spectators congregated on the water front of the city. REED, with a very heavy freight, including 40 cavalry horses for the United States Quartermaster-and the "Patapsco" Capt. NEFF. From New York, the side-wheel steamer "Manhattan" Capt. COLLINS, and the regular line steamer "Saraqossa" Capt. CBOWELL. Since which time it has steadily increased, having now a total membership of one hundred and fifty nine, each ono of whom. I am happy t- inform you, ! has come forward and promptly paid his arrears. While our membership has been rapidly increas? ing, I am called upon to report only one resigna? tion from the entire, hst, Mr. Joseph* ?. Morgan, a member ot tho Executive Committee, and this was in consequence of his removing from the oity. QBHEBAL BUSINESS. Soon after the organization of the Board sub? committees were appointed, and various impor? tant questions referred to them for consideration. Tho Chairman of the Corrimittee on Hall, Bead? ing Boom, and Library made a report, which was roierred back to tho Eieoutive Committee for pru? dential reasons. This is a subject which has, since fhe formation of the Board, occupied its attention, and the Sec? retary begs to recommend an early action on the part of the Board. It is to bo hoped that this Board .will lead off in this grand scheme, not only for the difirision. of knowledge and intercourse among its members, but for the good of the people of our city and State. The Committees on Inland Transportation and CoaBtwieo Navigation, two of the most impor? tant of our committees, have been at wo*k the entire year, and presented several inter? esting reports. Besides these we have had i interesting debates, Reports on tho Blue Ridge Railroad from Messrs. Trenholm & Gourdin-on i the Bankrupt Law, Rates of Wharfage, on the ! construction of the Cheraw and CoalSeld Railroad, when addresses were made by Messrs. B. D. Town? send and Allen McFarland-the Usury LawB, and I many other topics. We have also put ourselves ia communication with Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade in various parts of tho United States, and have been in receipt of important communications from many of them. Altogether the CL aries ton Board of Trade has I every reason to feel gratified at the degree of suc ! cess that has crowned its new-born efforts thus far. It has often been asked, what has the Board of Trade dono ? Doubtless the objects and inten? tions of this body are, in many instfjaces, misun? derstood. It should bo impressed upon the minde of those who are apt to ask, what hau b:>en accom? plished? that the Board of Trade is uo legislative body, endowed with the privilege of enforcing its convictions in the shape of laWB upon the people about us. We have no actual po vor to improve business facilities or destroy monopolies; but we havo tho advantage of making the feeling of the community publicly known. Every merchant of our city, in whatever kind of business, has the privilege or joining oui'body, and thus secure to himself tho advantage of expres? sing publicly his ideas on the business points of the dav. Merchants of every grade and standing meet here on equal footing. All have a right to be heard, and the decision of the Board of Trade may always bo considered an index to the feelings and wishes of a majority of tho business men of our city. We pretend, through our members, to represent energy, experience and cap tal, and there is no reason why the mercantile voice of Charleston should not meet with the same attention and re? spect as is given to associations of the same character in our sister cities. Lot us not, then, grow weary in well doing, and I think we have every reason to look forward to a bright and happy futuro. FINANCE. The aggregate receipts of the past, year amount to $2163 62. Expend,tures $39151, leaving 'a bal? ance in the Treasury of $1769 ll. Before closing this report, your Secretary knows that he is expressing the s ntiment of every indi vid ml member of the Board when he mentions the many acts of kindness and attention to our body on tho uart of Messrs.
