Cardoza, a col? ored roan, originally from this city, some time ago arrested for embezzling letters and money, under sn assumed name, from the postoffice in Brooklyn, on Tuesda.- ?ast was admitted to bail in tue sum of $1,500 before Judge BENEDICT. The case has been transferred for trial to the Circuit Court. THE SIXTH INFANTRY BAND.- Tired nature was completed restored'lost-night by tho delicious rnusio of the Sixth Band; wno were performing at the Charleston Hotel. We have missed the music of the band for some time, and hail its reappear? ance with pleasure os the best antidote to the blues that can bo found.' Tho sorenado of last night caused the hours to glide swiftly away, and the pen moved smoothly along keeping time with the different tua cs. EAST BAY.-The paving of this street has greatly improved its appoarance and given perfect B?tie faction, b?t the recent heavy rains have caused certain portions to eave in, and ugly puddles were formed. The workmen have been engaged, when? ever the weather permitted, in repairing these damages, and rf the sun continues to shine for a fow days in succession, the street will be again in thorough order. So _ far, only the portion from ' Eraser's Wharf to the Battery hos beau paved, the gap being left to await the straightening of the street by the city authorities. R?solutions to this effect were poss 3d in Council, and arrangements made to procure the necessary ground from the U. S. Government. ENTERPRISING FREEDMEN.-The aptitude of Sambo to acquire knowledge hos been often dis? played, but in some few cases their acquirements Bave not conferred on them mach renown. Cer? tain enterprising colored men have made them? selves proficients in several confidence games, ona wander about the wharves and wagon yards prey? ing upon the credulity of the country negroes. The rictimized, when they discover their losses, are furious, bat the gay deceivers are ihen minus and their haunts unknown. The boldness with which this cheating is performed impeses upon the strange darkies, and they bet without suspi? cion, but "the best laid schemes of mice and men oft gang aglee," and the cheats ore frequently dis? covered by the detectives and housed in jail. A raid was made yesterday upon a gang of these villains who had their headquarters at the James Island landing, and when discovered, had swindled from their unsuspecting victims $23 and a cow. The detectives soon overhauled the party, and they were mode to return their ill-gotten spoils. . MAYOR'S COURT, March 29.-William Peterson, a hopeful youth of color, wLo was discharged on the 28th, after a week's confinement, for making free with other peoples' property, was again brought up for stealing railroad iron; and the theft being proved upon him, he was ordered to be imprisoned two weeks. William Cuthbert, a colored scholar of the Morris street school, who, believing rn -the doctrine that he must "drink deep" from the stream of knowledge, filched several books from his fellow students; but being detected, he was arraigned before bis Honor, who locked him np for a week in the cells, where he can take his books, and all he can't read, be can tear ont. Andrew, a black knight of*the scraper and brush, who was indulging with some of his brother sweeps in throwing bricks ia the street, and unfor? tunately struck a gentleman who haulod him up, was fined $2. Jano Poinsett, a female of color, who owns a fractious cow, that took the child of George Smith upon her hornB and tossed him, thereby breaking his log, was brought up by the said Smith y to answer, but ths Mayor referred him to a higher court, os he had not the power to assess damages in such cases. David Morrison and Charles Brown, two inter? esting young gemmans of dusky hue. who helped themselves to a hat ada pair of shoes from the store of a King street merchant, who declined prosecuting, as tho stolen property had been re? stored, were imprisoned ten clays each. According to their statement, it was a hard case to be locked up, for they had been presented with the articles by a young man in the street, who pressed them upon them, and they thought ii would have boen rude not to accept. As to tho running, they ad? mitted they did move rapidly upon the occasion, but the police were going with all thc speed they could, and us they have lately been spoken to by many persons who are running for office, they thought perhaps it was the fashionable gait. A well dressed female, who had boen looking at somebody drinking, and who had boen brought to tho Guara House as limp as a rsg-baby, was dis? charged os she had no money, and as she insisted that the whole difficulty arose from her having tho toothache^ and in her attempting to put a little laudanum into the hollow, a few drops must have gone down her throat, v. A sailor who had just come as/tor* and got drunk, T and then occupied a board was fined $5. ? THE OLOTHXNC? HOUSE OF CHARLESTON.-Thia is a bold assertion, but is sustained by facts. It suffered, in common with other mercantile houses, from the exigencies of tho times, but the business was re ! sumed at the close of tho war and the establish j ment is now fully prepared to sustain its past rep? utation. THE NEW OBGAN.-It was cm- privilege last night, in company with hundreds of others, to be present at the trial of the new organ, just completed for Grace ohurch. This organ was constructed in Charleston by ono of our citizens, Mr. JOHN BAEEB, a highly skilled organ builder, of moro than 80 years' experience. Tho church was filiad to its ut? most oapacity, and the majestic notes of tho ATo i522m Organum were received with silent rapture by an appreciative audience. The organ was tested by Professor BaBKHaar, organist of Grace Church, Prof. RUDDOCK, of Central Church, Prof. CNEALE, of the Huguenot Church, Prof. ECKEL, of St. Paul's Church, RADCLXFFEBOBO, and Prof. HARRISON, of the German Lutheran Church. The organ, under the touch of these master hands, was made to give forth the entire compass and the utmost volume of its sounds. We regret being unacquainted with ihe divine science, and our consequent inability to criticize the instrument in suitable language. But we can speak of its effect on untutored ears, both for ourselves and from what we heard others say, that the music was pleasing in thc highest degree. Tho effect of the voxhumana and tr?mulo stops combined, when played by a skilled organist, is truly enchant? ing. The imitation's of the human voice is almost perfect. The organ is "divided," allowing the splendid Gothic window in front to be Been between its two halves. By this arrangement the organist sits at right angles to tho pulpit, and not with his back to it, as is usually the case. There axe a great many of the very latest improvements oh this*] organ not to be found on any other in the c; ty; and while in sweetness of tone and completeness ba all its parts it is equal to any organ in the city, it is also equal in power to all save one, and vorr nearly equal to it. The wood work is finished in very handsome style, entirely in accordance with tho style of Grace Ohurch. The pinnacles, finials, are of the purest Gothic, and all the oth-r arch < tectural niceties of this order are perfectly pre? served. The organ cost: about $4000,-decidedly the finest instrument for the price we have over *oon in, our city. Wr 'congratulate the vestry, con? gregation, and cho. of Grace Church on tho ac? quisition of such an adjuvant; and congratulate Mr. BAKER on the eminent success which has crowned his labors.
