There is nothing 1 hand to'disturb the. even flow of its existen shows of any description, and the old ci have to hunt about for some amusement to a little life in the community, and give th idea of the outside world. During^ the time the HASLOHS were with 1 were 'suffering from a very disagreeable at t. . the weather, which operated against tho T 'vary unfavorably., Notwithstanding the AC co dation afforded by the street cars," many wei able to attend, and -it was a subject of uni' regret that the skies were so unpropitious. We have seldom enjoyed the pleasure of s a performance in which, the actors were moi fait in their profession, and where their feats more astounding. . Notwithstanding the smaJ of the Hall, and the absence of ail facilities t< play their their talents, the: audiences were 1 . means small, and when the inclemency 0 . weather is considered, Charleston was nigh th represented. The HANLONS take with them our best w fer their future success, and we sincerely hope they may not encounter in Augusta such wet skies as greeted them in tins city. ' MAYOR'S COURT, February 9.-Samuel Orr, a 1 M family man of color, whoso fugar, coffee, had been consumed by an extravagant house] but who was determined they should never . for more as long as he had hands to grab, ma raid on the groceries of a gentleman and sup] himself quite liberally. But his charitable de was frustrated by an officer of the law, and hi teresting and affectionate relatives not only the necessaries of life, but ho will be compelle absent himself for a time from their pleasant t ety, while he hides his "diminished head" bel a fourth-story grated window at the Western tel x ;.'. . LIGHT j-Tim proposal .made, to the c by Mr. POZNAN^, to apply his multiplying pate to the streetrbmps7?ha?ke^ expenditure, comes before ;the City Council to-m< row night for consideration. This .subject h been laidrover at tho last two meetings, and. it fair to presume will at length be acted upon.. T. Committee who were appointed to investigate t matter reported favorably,' and but for a presan of other business the proposal would have bo considered before. One advantage resulting from the favorable o' cisi?n of the Council will be the increase of ti number of lamps, and thus give the city what a' has long needed, streets where darkness is at discount. At present many of them are unsai and a ramble in the dark may be attended with u pleasant consequence. Mr. POZNANS KI'S patent has been discussed 1 often that we do not wish to again discuss i merits; the facts are before the community, and is for them and the Council to decide, and ! wo si , cerely hopo that no farther delay will'be made bi that the subject will be thoroughly discussed ai some permanent .decision obtained. A furth* postponement can result in no good, and one moni is surely sufficient time to obtain all the informt tion necessary. 1? "< CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH.-A full audience ai sembled in this church yesterday, both in th morning and evening, tb' greet their new poste? It was the first tame since-the disastrous fire c '6*1 that the congregation had worshipped toge th ei and they gladly availed the?nselve8 of the privi lege of once more heartening to the word of G01 in their own sanctuary. Bev. W. H. Ao*T^ tb new Pastor, is a gentleman in every respect quail fled for the work he has undertaken, and his flock in tendering him a call, showed their appreciatioi of his talents. . . . . , . . His opening-discourse was entirely free from al sectional controversies, and was composed of pure gospel truths, which adapted themselves forcibly to the minds of tHoso-present Mr.' ADAMS' styh is pleasing; and bis genial maimers w?l com m enc him to his congregation. Although this, Lecture Boom is quite small, every seat has been taken, and the remaining members of Circular'Church have almost unanimously returned tq their fixai love, and their' familiar faces gave the new build? ing a home-like appearance that forcibly recalled the days before the fire. The church is a plaini but substantial structure, capable of seating the congr?gation with ease ; it is nicely carpeted, and is admirably adapted for tho purposes intended.: This is the first effort o? the church to re-establish itself, and, with a pastor liko Mr. ADAHS, and an energetic congrega tion, a successful result is certain. FROM BALTIMORE.-The acrow steamship Carro?, of the Baltimore and Liverpool line, arrived hero on Saturday last, with a large cargo of corn, ba? con, and other articles greatly needed by our pro? vision merchants, whose patience had been much taxed by the delays of th-? voyage First, the ice blockade had to bogot' through with,,whioh kept the Carrol over ten days, and *fVer a rapid run of fifty-two hours to our bar, no pilot, wo learn, waB at hand to bring her into port; a heavy northeaster having driven in all the pilot boats. The pilots allege that in such weather it is too dangerous to remain outside over night, as there are no beacons lit along the shore, as there used to be in former times, to warn mariners off. After this long delay, the Carrol came np to the city, and attracted con? siderable attention. Tho pier at Union Wharves {her berth place), in spite of theinclemency of the weather, waa soon crowded with consignees, and anxious inquiries were at once set on foot after ba? con and other members of the "staff" of life. In the meanwhile another rain, storm had set in from' the southwest, and after an ineffectual attempt to deliver the cargo by Messrs. MORDECAI ?& Co., the work had to-be.rwstprae^.Tmt?MoncTay. . :;r The ?Ww belongs tbthe-Baltimore and Ohio -i. Railroad Company, and will make the outward J Voyage to Now York under the direotion of Messrs. COURTENAY & TRENHOLH; and, as she bas excel lout accommodations, will no doubt. roceive her full complement of passengers, as wall as a heavy freight. THE CARLOTTA.-The Carlotta, whoso arrival was chronicled on Friday, is the pioneer vobt?el of a now line between this port and New York, feho was built in 18G0, and was intended for the Glasgow trado, but was bought by partios who subsequent? ly resold her to Slr. QUES'TAED, of Now York. Her engines.are very powerful and sufficient to give j her a rate of speod of fifteen milos per hour. Her register is A No. 1, and her tout ensemble shows that her owners have spared no pains to mako her not only thoroughly seaworthy, out a model in every respoct. The hull is of iron, and is divided into water and air tight compartments, carefully separated from each other, so that if one alone should be damag? ed tho result would not bc disastrous. Pumps placed in different parts of the vossol connect with -.hose wells or apartments, and by the use of the engines, three of which aro attached to the ship, the water could be pumped out in a short time. She has accommodations for sixty cabin passen? gers, and her berths and staterooms are arranged with great neatness, and with overy regard to the comfort of their inmates. Her capacity is about 1200 boles of cotton, and her facilities for storing and carriage are uns ^."passed. She carries a well amidship which contains over 1000 gallons of fl esh water, and bea ides this, has a condenser which transforms tho salt water into a good and drinka? ble fluid. Messrs. STREET BROTHERS & Co; ore the agents for this line, and it is the intention of the owners and others interested to add larger vessels if thy trade Bhould demand the increase. The Carlotta brought in a fine cargo of bacon, and has cotton already engaged for the return trip. A collation was given on board last Saturday by the agents and Captain CHAS. COLLESS, who proved himself to be the very prince of hosts, and his passengers need be in no danger of starvation while under his command. Capt. COLLINS is a native of Savannah, and his nautical experience is quite large; he is th -roughly posted on marino af? fairs, and is just the Captain for the Carlotta. The owners of this vessel are merchants in Now York, of good business standing. They are able and willing to assist the South in regaining her former prosperity; and have established this line with the view of increasing the travel between the two cities, and of furnishing .large and secure transports for freight and passengers. The agents in this city, Messrs. STREET BROS. & Co., are en? terprising merchants, and any business "entrusted to their management will be so conducted as to gain the approbation of the community and to in? sure its success. IT IS but reasonable to admit the evidence of our senses when we daily hear of tho extraordi? nary cures effected by MAR8DE?TS preparation of PECTORAL BALM. I find them superior to any pencil in use, even to the Paber or Ith* old English Cumberland Lead Pencil, being a uuperiur pencil for sketching, ornamental and mechanical dixirfng, and all the ordinary uses of a lead pencil. _ These pentvuo *re very finely graded and have a very smooth lead; evan the softest pondis hold the point well; they aro all t} ut oan be desired in a poa oil. lt gives mo great pleasure to be able to assure Americans that they will no longo, r be compelled to depend upon Germany or any other ion iga market tor pencils. .
