[FROM OOH SPECIAL CORRESPONDED. ] NEW YORK, January 25.-"When the Israelites crossed the Red Sea on dry land, and FEAROAH'S hosts, attempting to perform the same feat, came tc grief and went to bottom,- tho scene mast hav been rather exciting. On last "Wednesday a some? what similar scene was enacted here on tho East BlvetfpwU .a Jews and Gentiles crossed from Brooklyn to New York on wet ice instead of dry land. As soon as it became known that an ice bridge spanned the river, thousands of reckless individuals were so anxious to imitate the Jews ?ven afc the risk of going to bottom like their fol? lowers, that hundred j of policemen strove in vain to prevent them from attempting the dangerous feat. Thousands crossed in aafetv; and although at one time, whilst hundreds wore on tho ice, it broke and parted, strange to say there were but one or two lives lost. - The fact that persons have walked across from here to Brooklyn on an ieq fridge, has suggested the ad visibility of cous tine ting anice bridge of more substantial and durable material. It is pro? posed that the bridge Bb all span the river, one end being on Brooklyn Heights, and tho other termi? nus either at Chatham Square or some point in Wall street. It will be a bridge of sighs for'tho ferry boat companies, and a bridge of great size otherwise. The excitement caused by the failure of H. J. "Meyer & Co., the wealthy Broad street brokers, has been intensified by tho startling and tragic sequel the death of Mr. Yelverton, President of the Bank of Nor|h America. Mr. Yelverton had certified checks of this firm to the amount of $250,000, con? fident that they would be made good ere the hour for (dosing: but tho day advanced, and rumors were abroad that Meyer & Co. had failed. Tho news was soon confirmed; but meanwhile lux. Yol vortod had been attacked by a fit of apoplexy, caused by over-anxiety of mind, and yesterday he breathed his last. It is aai?i that Meyer & Co. had gone too deeply into ventures in Pennsylvania stock, and have been ruined thereby. A grand gathering is expected to take place to? night at the Cooper Institute, for the purpose of devising some means for relieving the suffering in the. So nth. The papers all contain editorials call? ing upon the people to screw their generosity up to the sacking place, and the Tribune speaks as loud? ly as any. A pugilistic encounter took place yesterday be? tween a Southerner named Lloyd and an unbleach? ed cl tizon of African descent, which resulted in a -complete victory on the part of the son of Ham. Mrs. Peterson, the colored gentleman's better half, had been emploj'ed by Mrs. Lloyd to make her a dress. The dress was mode, but did not fit prop? erly, wherefore. Mrs. Lloyd sent her husband to Peterson's house, bearing, not a flag of truce, but a bundle containing the objectionable piece of work. In the Superior Court yesterday, five thousand dollars damages were awarded to a man who had been injured by the ears of the Forty-second street Railroad Company, caused by negligence on tho . part of .some o? the employees. WASHINGTON, January 25.-The seeming check received yesterday in the House by the Radicals in - their mad career of revolution, is due solely to the tone of resolution recently perceptible in the pub lie press, backed by unmistakeable signs of a spirit of r?sistance in the masses of the people. How? ever^ "We have scotched the snake, not killed ii" '" Although Mr. STEVENS acknowledged tho present defeat of his pot measure of practical revolution, let not the public therefore infor that the extreme element is powerless. The machinery of caucus dictation, I learn, will again be invoked, and it may be. successful, as m the case of Ashley's proposition for impeachment. lu some form a practical demonstration, capable of initiating a conflict and general rupture of the peaceful rela? tions of the country, would seem to be inevitable, as the Radicals are"firmly improssod with the idea that "nothing short of another physical collision can enable them to perfect their plans for the over? throw of republican government, and substituting in its stead a military despotism. "Such rapid revolutions," soys the Chronicle of this morning, "as those through which we have passed, and are passing, inspire a natural appetite for rapid legis? lation. Tins is said in reference to the failure of Stevens' "reconstruction" project, and the editor reminds his leaders, whose mordinato "appetite for rapid legislation," it seems, renders thom for? getful of the rapidity with which the revolutionists are hurrying the nation into civil war, that "tli? subj oct of impeachment itself hangs over other questions, like an ever-present obligation." In other words, the impatient "earnest men" of the party are herein told that ultra measure-? arc merely postponed until tho executive power shall have been grasped by Congress, through tho forc? ible ejection of tho President, and tho substitu tion of one of their own creatures.
