TUESDAY MORNING, JANUART 22, 18?7._ LOCAL MATTERS. WE ABE indebted to M. M. QUINN for DemoresCs MonUily Magazine for February. Copies eau bo obtained at bis Up-Towu News Depot. PARADISE LOST.-Tho Panorama last night was a splendid success. Tho Hall was crowded, with old and young ; and all seemed tc enjoy the beautiful pictures. Those who, from a .'-nowledgo of MIL TON and ST. JOHN, wero ablo co appreciate tho powor of tho artist in illustrating these authors, could not withhold their admiration, while tho juvenile portion of tho audienco wore perfectly en? chanted with the views of Paradise, and alt the pretty birds and beases aboding therein. WELL DONE.-We would'call the attention of our readers to a new invention, that is well calculated to produce a commotion among the well-diggers, Within the Artesian Well enclosure, corner of Mooting and Wentworth strcots, .may bo seen a now Btyle of pump, having a piece of common gas piping attached. This requires no digging, as was wont to bo the case with wells, but is drivon down by a slcdgo hammer to the depth of ton or fifteen feet. You pour a little water into the pump, and you aro woll rewarded by an ample never-failing supply of water. Well-a-day, what nest? WE copy the following from the Halifax (N. Si) Evening -Express, of the 9th instant, becauso we know that tho many admirers of the Roseneath, and the old firm friends of Captain AULD, will be happy to hear of the continued prosperity of both : The fine iron ship Roseneath, Auld master, ;a frequent visitor to . our pert, recently made the . passago from Montreal to the Clyde in fifteen days and four hours, which is tho quickest made during ?. tho past season, and ono of the fastest runs over made by any sailing ship. She beat her sister ship, the Shandon, which sailed from Montreal at the same time, by some days. THE COURT OF GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMMON PLEAS.-The Court met at 10 A. M. yesterday, Judge T. Ni DAWKINS presiding. Tho Juries wore called, but only a fow answorod to their names, and tho Clerk was ordered to make ont a now talcs and venire; ponding which tho Court adjourned. An important case has been assigned for trial to-day, and Jurors aro reqnestod to bc punctual in their attendance. DISTRICT COURT, Judgo LOGAN presiding.-Tho Court met at tho usual hour, and tho cases assign? ed for thc day taken np. ?Tho State os. Thos. Kelly and Thos. Ellis-As? sault and battery. R. W. SEYMOUR, Esq.. appear? ed for the d?fonce. Verdict not guilty. The State vs. Charles Ellington end Jacob Small -Larceny. H. W. SCHROEDER, Esq., for tho do fence. Verdict not guilty for Ellington ; guilty or Small. Tho State vs. Michael Darcy and John Darcy ssanlt and Battery. R. W. SE?MOUR, Esq., for defence. Not guilty. The Stato vs. Thos. Moran and Horace Latimcr -Assault and Battery. These being cross indict? ments, wero taken up together, H. W. SCHROE ER, Esq., for Moran ; T. P. RYAN, E?q., for Lati mer. Verdict guilty for Moran ; not guilty for Latimer. I f The Stato vs. Jackson aiinsRomo Smith- | f Larceny. Guilty. Tho State vs. Jno. Hainan-Assault and Battery. Continued. ! It would bo proper in this connection to stato t hat the light character of tho punishments im osed in some cases on Saturday, was not owin_ to any partiality or to extenuating circumstances, * b ut in those cases the prisoners had already boen 1 c onfined in the Jail for several months, and an ad- ] ditional punishment would havo boen cruel and ' ncalled for. The sentences were based upon tho i character of tho offence and tho longth of time thc 1 arties havo been previously confined, and this J tatement is made to explain thc seeming dis- * ere paney in tho punishments imposed by Judge i LoO-iN. ' ( -o-' MAYOR'S COURT, January 21.-A man who waa j ] detected concealed in a steamship on Saturday last, and upon whom some letters were found, 11 hrowing considerable suspicion upon him as hav? ing been engaged in some nefarious transaction* was brought before his Honor for examination, ind ordered to be detained. Elias Perry, tho "gentle youth of color who has eon several timos before this Court, under chargea of attempting to steal, and carrying false keys in his pocket, was again put to the bar suffering from the same complaint. The keys being confiscable, were put to tho credit of tho city, and tho illustri? ons Perry will havo charge of tho interior of a cell for ten~daya. * Several "peep's day" boys who wero engaged in the streets in "midnight shout and revelry," and firing pistols occasionally at each other by way of o nhvening the scene, wero sont io a magistrate to answer for a riot. A young negro woman who has gone crazy on tho subject of freedom, was sont to tho asylum connected with th? City Hospital. A man who was found lying down drunk in tho street, but who was indignant that such an intima? tion should bo made by the policeman, and said he had been two weeks sick, and that his doctor had given him u large dose of opium, which ovorcam? him whilo ho was walking, was fined $5 for taking physic that smelt so mnch liko whiskey. A Teutonic youth of nolicsomo proclivities, who was delighting himself with tho intellectual amuse? ment of ringing door bettr, was mado to pTiy $5 for the laughable entertainment. Two very email specimens of tho colored race were fined $2 each for fighting " dorgs " in tho street. r UNITED'STATES DISTRICT COURT-Hon. GEO. S. BRYAN presiding Judge.-Tho Libel case of tho United States vs. the,, schooner #rcpes&of)was r esumed. Mr. CHARLES H. GROVES, Deputy Col? le ctor, and Mr. NEIL, Dr. EDWARD EEOEELZY and Mr. JOSEPHUS WOODRUFF, Custom House Li spee? wa, deposed that they were engaged in tho seizure, storage and 6ale of certain segara and rum found on board of the schooner Grapeshot in July last. The articles weie taken from the forecastle, and it was stated at tho timo that they bolonged to tho seamen, and the Captain appealed to the Collector to release the goods, as the sailors did not know that they had violated tho Rovenue Laws. This was not done, and thejgoods were Bold for $250. The District Attorney proposed at this stago to introduce GEOEQE SMITH, Captain of tho Rebecca Hurst, to substantiate the testimony o if CAMPS. This was objected to by tho respondents, and tho objection sustained by tho Judge. Tho case was then closed, but tho counsel for the defenco petitioned Court to bo allowed to ro produco Mr. BANCROFT and Mr. BLACK, who, as experts, could testjfy to the quality of the segars. After some discussion from tho opposite sido thia was granted, and it was stated that tho price in thia markot would bo $35 per 1000 for tho cheaper and $45 per 1000 for the better brand. The tobac? co was very light and flimsy, and it would cost more to import them than they could possibly be sold for. Baracoa tobacco was of the most in? ferior character, and was never or Bcldom im? ported, as there was no sale for it, and cargoes had been shipped to Europe i:i order to dispose of them. Capt. D. B. VINCENT testified that he has been to Baracoa s: voral times, and has bought many thousand segars at Havana, and did not think that those shown in Court wero at all saleable, and would not bring moro than $25 to $40 per thou? sand. The evidenco on the part of both tho defenco and prosecution being closed, W. E. MIKELL, Esq., oponed the argument for tho defenco. Ho first commenced by reviewing the testimony advanced on the part of the prosecution, and showed that tho character of their principal witnesses was ou tirely unreliable, and their statements wore thrown out by tho Grand Jury, who returned No Bill in the cases which they had for thoir consideration. He criticised thc conduct of tho Custom House officials'scvcrely, and commented upon the ques? tionable evidence offered by their paid spies and informers. He also touched upon tho appraise? ment of the segars by theso officials, and reviowod their past career, showing that their knowledge of tobacco was very limited, ne paid a glowing tributo to thc testimony of Abram Vincent, a color? ed witness, whoso truthful statements wero worthy of great praise. The argument was ono of great ability, and Mr. MIKELL handled his subjects without gloves, show7 ing, in tho most forcible language, the discrepan? cies in tho statements of tho different witnesses, and reviewing their past caroer and antecedents in orderte provo the inadmissibility of their evi? dence. His speech wa3 two hours in longth, and was listened to with marked attention by the Court and a largo audience. The case will bo resumed to-day at 10 A. M., .when the District Attorney will make his argu MB. JOHN FRANCIS MAGUIRE, M. P. for Cork, otc. etc.. hst night addressed a very largo audi enco of his countrymen at Hibernian Hall. He spoke at some length, and was listened to With at? tention, barring a few humorous interruptions, that helped to enliven the occasion. Mr. MAGUIRE spoko of tho condition of Ireland, but really gave nothing that wo can consider information on tho subject. His opinions and convictions were clcar ly*t variance with those of Ids audience; and he was now and then reminded t hat what ho said only represented tho Tories, and not the people of Ire? land. He mentioned that ho had written a book in defence tho Pope, for which His Holiness had honored him with a title; that ho had written another book, ?' Tho Life of Father MATHEW ;" and was now engaged in writing a third book, about "Tho Irish in America." The speaker was fre? quently applauded. Among thoso present we no? ticed Bight Rev. Bishop LYNCH and other Catholic clergy. COTTON STEALING.-For some monthB tho South Daroliua Railroad Company havo been missing ,-otton from along their lino, and havo been unable io find any cluo to thc thiovos. On thc 20th of December throe bales were missed from a cotton .rain near tho Soven Milo Pump. Lieut. HEN? DRICKS was iinmediatoly notified of tho loss, and ie put thc case in tho hands of Officers DAVIS and HEYER for iuvost igation. Thoso oflicors proceeded o the spot, and, aftor somo time spont iu examin ng tho different features of tho theft, succeeded, >n tho 17 th instant, in capturing a color od man lamed John Piocknoy, on tho Dorchester Road. Be was staying at Mr. THOS. JOHNSON'S farm, and ;he bagging, with tho private marks, and some of ?he ropo, was found at his homo. On tho same Jay, near the Six Milo House, they overhauled ono Cornelius Po-cher, who was proved to bo a partner in tho robbery. Subsequently, from information receivod, thoy arrested Rento Dunn, at Gadsden's Groen, in HARRISON'S wood yard. Stephney Wil? liams, ono of thoir confreres, was still at large, and tho indefatigable oflicers learning that ho was in tho neighborhood of Waltcrboro', proceeded there, and fouad him about nine miles from Jack aonboro', on Dr. GRORGE RIVERS' place. He was immediately placod in the Waltorboro' Jail for Bafo keoping, and afterwards transferred to Charleston: Tho quartotto aro now safely oaged, and have since made a confession, in which they stated that ono bale was thrown from the cars at Johnson's Farm, on the Dorchester Road, and another al the forks of tho samo road, near tho Six Milo House. They woro thon removed to Pincknoy's houso and cut into snail parcels, which woro carried to tho city and sold. Tho parties who bought this aro known, havo boon arrested, and as cotton stealing is a ponai offence, wo trust that they may all soon recoivo tho punishment duo their crimes. Tho partios engaged in th's transaction woro all ?olorcd, but ""woro ovidently old hands, for thoir mterprisewas managed with consummate Baili and ibility, and it nocded tho untiring porsovoraneo of ibo detectives to traco thoir guilt homo to them. Officers DAVIS and MEYER woro indefatigable iu their, researches, and they dosorvo not only tho thanks of ?ho Company, but thoso of tho whole business community, for bringing these rascals to ?. just retribution. **" -o-' SURVIVORS' ASSOCIATION.-Ino attention of mem? bers of this Association is catted to a notice in an ather column of. a special meeting for tkediscuB ?ion of important business, to be hold this oven ing, at Market Hall, at 7 o'clock.
