PAINFUL ACCIDENT.-Wo aro informed that a young lady of this city was seriously and painfully burnt yesterday morning by her clothes taking fire from tho grate. She was standing with her back to tho fire at tho time, and the draft drew her frock into the blaze. Becoming alarmed, she ran from the room into tho kitchen, and .f her screams had not brought assistance, would have been burnt lo death. Several gentlemen hearing her crie3 repli? ed in and succeeded in smothering the flames in time to 6ave her lifo, but the action ol' the tiro had alreadv burnt her torribly. "RING OUT TEE OLD, ring in the new." says TEN? NYSON, and by way of carrying out this injunction, the United States 6th Infantry Band started out from their quarters about midnight-the dividing lino botweon 'OG and '07-on a serenading tour to their friends iu different parts of tho city. The Band was in fino tune; which, indeed, is always tho case. We carno up to the Charleston Hotel just aa SCHUBERT'S Serenade was sending forth its dulcet notes. Our friend MIXES, never found nap? ping, was wido awake, aa usual, gracefully per? forming thc duties of thc attentive host." The ?oung year was received in most hospitable stvle y the merry party at the Charleston. BETTES LATE TUAN NEVER.-We had occasion a few days since to speak of tho Charleston Alms House, and remarked that wo had found thc in? mates in unblissft? ignorance in respect to all that pertains to Christmas. ST. NICK, they said, had passed them by. We now learn that the feast had only been postponed, and Christmas came off on New Year's Day. The Commissioners,-whother incited thereunto by the noble oxample given them by our thoughtful City Rogistrar,-by our remarks in THE DAILT NEWS, br prompted by'then own generous impulses,-gave the inmates "of tho *-lmn House a fino dinner on Tuesd*y, the 1st of January. Several of tho Commissioners, we loam, went to groat trouble about ii, determined tho poor creatures should havo a good dinner for onco m their lives. Tho very efficient Master and tho Matron deserve a great deal of credit for the satis? factory manner in which it was prepared, and the very pleasant style in which it was served. THE STREET BAH.war CABS.-As our people havo had an opportunity of observing, fer some time past, the convoniences of this impnved stylo of city travelling, and especially in all the great changes of weather which we have recently had to endure, and aa all ai e apparently so well "pleased with the introduction of the railway among ns, it seems that we should throw in our little mite of ' praise to the President and Direction for thc very able manner in which every thing has been camed out in connection with thc whole undertaking, and ' that we should, at the same timo, say, that in their selection of conductors for both lines, they havo employed gentlemen whose attention and polite ness to all passengers is worthy of high commcn- I dation, and whoso efforts to please must enhance c still more the popularitv of this accommodating ! MAYOR'S COUBT, January 3-The docket this morning was very light, although a wet night like the last is usually selected by bummers and others for soaking "red-eye" (on "the counter-irritation ginciple), to keep off the outside damp, and as e bar-keepers, when closing np, generally put these aleepmg customers in a part of the street where they will receive oarly attention from the police and be carried to the Guard House to dry, still on the present occasion there were none even of this class for us to note. Two men, a white and;black, who wore drunk and noisy, were fined $5 each. An Individual who had gone into a bar-room to take a drink, but made a mistake and took a ten dollar bill from the counter, was sent to a magis? trate to discuss the matter and explain how the error occurred.
