PAINFUL ACC?DENT.-We are informed that a young lady of this city was seriously and painfully burnt yesterday morning by her clothes taking fire from the grate. She was standing with hor back to the fire at the time, and the draft drew her frock into the blaze. Becoming alarmed, she ran from the room into tho kitchen, and if hor screams had not brought assistance, would have been burnt to death, ?overa! gentlemen hearing lier cries rush? ed in and succeeded in smothering tho fiamos in time to save her lifo, but the action of the fire had already burnt her terribly. "RINO OCT THE OLD, ring in the now," says TEN? NYSON, and by way of oarrying out this injunction, the United States Gth Infantry Band started out from their quarters about midnight-tho dividing line between '68 and '(?7-on a serenading tour to then- friends in different ports of thc city. The Band was in fine tune; which, indeed, is always tho case. Wo came up to the Charleston Hotel just as SCHUBERT'S Serenade was sending forth its dulcet notes. Tho young year was recoived in most hospitable style Dy the merry party at tho Charleston. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.-Wo had occasion a few days since to speak of tho Charleston Alms House, and remarked that we had found tho in? mates in unbUssful ignorance in respect to all that pertains to Christmas. ST. NICE, they said, bad passed them by. We now learn that the feast had only been postponed, and Christmas came off on New Year's Bay. The Commissioners,-whother incited thereunto by tho noble oiample given thom by our thoughtful City Registrar,-by our remarks in THE DAILY NEWS, br proivptod by their own' generous impulse?,-gave tho inmates of the Ahns House a fine dinner on Tuosday, the 1st of January. Several of tho Commissioners, we learn, went to greftt trouble about it, determined the poor creatures should havo a good dinner for once in their lives. The very efficient MiBter ondbtho Matron deserve a groat deal of credit for the satis? factory manner in which it was prepared, and the very pleasant style in which it was served. THE STREET RAILWAY CABS.-AB our peoplo have had an opportunity of observing, for some time psst, the conveniences of this improved style of city travelling, ?nd especially in all the great changes of weather which we have raently had to endure, and as all arc apparently sd well pleased with the introduction of the railway among us, it seems that we should throw in our little mite of praise to the President and Direction for the very able manner in which every thing has been carried out in connection with the whole undertaking, aud that we should, at the same time, say, that in their selection of conductors for both lines, they have employed gentlemen whose attention and polite? ness to all passengers is worthy of high commen? dation, and whose efforts to please must enhance still more the popularity of this accommodating line. .
