THE CHARLESTON MARKET. rOB THE WEEK ENDING THURSDAY EVENINO, DECEM? BER 27. COTTON.-The continually receding price of gold, and ; the consequent decline in thc rate for sterling bills, has had a depressing influence on thc Cotton market ? throughout the week; this, with a slight faffing off in price at liverpool, say from 14??d. to 14><d., have been ,the most prominent causes for keeping the staple in a dull and declining condition. Under these adverse in? fluences thc article has come down in price about 2 cents IB lb. from our quotations of Friday last, with very lim- ! ited sales, factors in many instances preferring to take the chances of the future and hold their stocks, to selling at | the prevailing figures. The receipts at this point have :,been ? lao bales of ah. kinds this week, against 6969 the '"'week before. The exports have been 7783 bales, and the week previous 2429. Tho vlaily features of the trade here for thc past week are as follows: A rapid decline in gold caused a dull market on Friday, " purchasern acting with caution, and factors who were disposed to realize had to sell at about }<c. off. Sales some 330 bales, the closing quotations being 32>?@33c for Low Middling, 33><c. for Middling, and 34>?@35c. for Strict Middling Cotton. On Saturday thc downward tendency of prices con? tinued, and the rates fell off fully lc. fi Rs, with sales of | 100 bales-prices too irregular to be quoted. On Monday, dullness 6till characterized the market, tho transaclions being generally in" favor of the buyer, .with sales of 175 bales, on the basis of 32c. fl 16 for Mid? dling Cotton. Tuesday being Christmas, there was no business trans- ; acted. On Wednesday buyers were disposed to operate, but holders wore in many cases withholding their Cotton, expecting a favorable change in the market, and the transactions were about 231 bales, Middling Cotton sell- j ing for 31>:a32c. Yeatorday the market was flat, and prices declined a half cant fi lb. Sales about 200 bales, viz: 17 at 29; 21 at SO; 65 at 31; 41 at 31}<; 21 at 32 ; 6 at 32 }?. Wcquote: Low Middling.30>?@31 . NEW ORLEANS, Dece nber 22.-COTTON-The market j opened this morning subject to thc same influences that prevailed yesterday, and has continued duU and droop? ing throughout the day. The offerings were quite libe? ral, and tactor s were disposed to scU, but buyers showed little willingness to oporate unless at concessions to which the former were ill-inclined to submit. Under these circumstances thc sales were of a restricted character, footing up at the close barely 2100 bales, taken by four? teen brokers, at prices indicating a decided tendency to inside figures. Referring to the above remarks, we re? peat as follows, assimilating to tho Liverpool classifica? tions: Ordinary, 26a27c; good ordinary, 28a29c; low mid? dling, 30a31c, and middl ng 32c.
