ACCIDENT.-A lad named DONOVANT was acci? dentally run over by a carriage last night, in Meet? ing street. His wounds, we leam, are not regarded as dangerous, though the little fellow was badly bruised. SALE OF RF. AT, ESTATE.-Mr. T. A. WHITNEY, yes? terday sold a large amount of landed property, belonging to the estate of the late DONALD MACK? INTOSH; and we were pleased to see that he had a large audience, and that the bidding was prompt and brisk. From what we know of the houses and lots sold, we incline to the opinion that the proper? ty brought very good prices; altogether one of-the hest signs of the growing prosperity of a commu? nity. . No. 26 Vanderhorst street sold for $2275. No. 103 Wentworth street brought $5350. No. 529 King street, at present occupied by Mr. C. H. BEHBE, brought $3000. No. 531 sold for $3400. The house next north of Mackintosh's Court wont for S5750. The house occupied by Lawrence Campbell, the barber, brought $2C50. The other lots brought $600, $325, $1850, $1800, $2910, and $1700 respect? ively, in the order in which they had been pub? lished in the advertisement of the sale. This property was sold by order of the executor. LOCKED UP.-An in dividual (sailing himself CHAS. HASTINGS, and professing to be from Canada, was lodged in the Upper Wards Guard House on Men day afternoon last, by Mr. J. C. BICKLEY, who, hav? ing visited his home in Summerville a day or two ago, found that it had been broken open, and sev? eral articles stolen, among them a gun and two or three flasks of powder. In examining the interior of the premises, Mr. B. happened to open a closet, where he found HASTINGS nicely ensconced; and taking him in possession, he brought him to town, and lodged him as above. He has since been com? mitted to jail by a magistrate. MASONIC-At the Annual Communication of St. Andrews Lodge, No. 10, A. F. WHISKEY.-This is a beverage which they say editors and printers have a partiality for, and that "Locals" are slightly addicted to ; but, without any reference to the first parties named, we can certify for ourselves that we know the difference, on a fair taste, between "old rye" and cod liver oil. And we must admit that lately we have been thinking, when we have gone into the "pure stuff," or rather the pure stuff into ns, that we were bilious, or perhaps troubled with a decayed tooth, the taste in our month has been so peculiar; but the recent seizure and inspection of whiskey in the New York distilleries settles the matter for ns with? out farther doubt, as this delightful tonio, it ap? pears, is now compounded under the following re? cipe: "To forty gallons of common whiskey add thirty gallons of water, five gallons of tincture of Guinea pepper, one quart of tincture of pelf tory, two ounces of acetic ethgr, one and a half gallons of strong tea, and three ounces of pulverized char? coal." Being now in possession of this extraordi? nary piece of information, we have concluded, so far as we are individually concerned, to call for some other liquid after raw oysters. WOFFOBD COLLEGE.-The second term of the j thirteenth session of this institution, as will be seen from an advertisement in our columns this morning, commences on the 8th of January. The College, during the thirteen years of its ex? istence, has made for itself:, an enviable mame. Her graduates are to be foui;d in, all ranks and in all professions; some- tilling their irabiv? soil, and others holding offices of honor and responsibility bestowed up?n them by their fellow-citizens. The Faculty is one of the best in the country. President SHIPP, for years connected with the Uni? versity of North Carolina, stands nigh among the ? scholars and educators of the South', Prof. DUN? CAN is a most finished classical, scholar, and an ex- I cellent teacher. Dr. WHTTEFOOKD SMITH is too well known in this his native city to need any common dation from our pen. Prof. JAMES H. CARLISLE, who. flTto the chair of Mathematics, has been devoted j to the teacher's profossion.for a number of years, and we know not his rival as an instructor.- Prof. DTJPBZ, the accomplished lecturer on Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Geology, understands how to throw a charm around every subject he handles, and ha? tho knack of always.interesting- bis hear erB.~Pr?f.
