Charleston has the ropulation abroad of boing a city of old fogies, whoro me chanics hava. not half a chanco, and somo of our ownoitizons axe inclined to indulge in tho same belief ; but wo intend to atato a fow facts, in tho course of tliis article, which wo hope will seno to abrogate any such notion from the minds of our roadors. "VYo shall mention the 'various machino shops topographically, commencing at Line-street, as if wo had just popped in from tho country and woro bent on finding some nondescript engine, which, after all, was not tojbo found. The first establishment that wo strike on this route is, of course, tho SOUTH CAT.OIJNA- nAILUOAD CAB SHOPS. Those aro situated north of Lino street, and are tho most exlonsivo works of tho kind in tho city. Here freight, mail and socond and first class pas senger cara ara mado out and out. Thcro aro seve ral cars now on tho stocks, among which aro a mail car, to run on tho through routo from Augusta to lung ville, and a commissary car, built expressly for tho commisaary of this department, to trans port provisions to the troops in tho interior. Wo saw horo two tools that wo did not see in any oi the othor shops. Ouo was a trip-hanmior, worked by machinery that could bo so rogulatod as to strike a blow hoavio: than that of a giant or aa light as that of an infant. Tho other wau an In* Btrumout i'or palling off car whools from tho nxlos. It is so powerful that it sometime? snaps in two one of its iron parts that is six inches wido and six inches thick. Tho South Carolina Railroad Company now mako all their own cars, aud tharc are different departments in the shops for iron work, carpenter's work, painting, seating and tin ning, so that when tho car is turned out it is in running order and doos not need any additional work whatovor. Among the curiositioa of the placo is a car mado ontholy of iron. It was for merly tho headquarters car of Major-Goneral THOMAS, and was bought by Superintendent PEAKE at a Government solo in Nashville It is divided into threo compartments-ouo is a kitchen, an other a dining room, and tho third ?B furnished with soato that may bo changed into comfortable beds. On each door is painted ''Headquarters De partment of the Cumberland." Wo supposo that tho General must havo had this car manufactured to ordor, to enablo him to travel in the stylo suited to his position without fear of guerilla ri?o balls. Tho work dono boro is exclusively wood work, BUOh as building cara, planing boards, grooving and tonguoing, rabiting, &o., &o. Tho principal jobs now on hand otp somo freight cara for tho Northoastorn Railroful and thoCheraw and Dal lington ltailroad, and tho shaping of tho stringers for the City Railroad. Tho shaping of a stringer, which ia tho stick of lumbor on which tho iron ia laid, is performed in a Bingle operation, and dooa not toko more than half a minuto. Messrs. Thoro aro two tracks loading into the round-houso, and in tho contro is a turn-tablo, by moan? of which tho engines can bo shifted on to any one of the short tracks proparcd for their reception. Thora aro oighteon of thoso, and of courso that number of locomotives can bo housed at ono time, but thcro aro at prosont only twolvo under repair. Tho roiuid-hoiiBO is tho feature which distinguishes theso shops from any others in town, and tho making and repair of difforont parts of locomotives is tho principal work done. BASONS' FOUNDltY AND MACHINE SHOPS nro situated at tho cornor of Columbus nnd Nassau Htreotu, and have sovoral times boen described in tho columns of this paper. They wcro extensively patronized by tho Confcdorato Government, and afterwards very much injured by tho Fedoral forces. Relics of tho Govornmont work aro still to ho scon lying about tho yard, in the shape of piceos of cannon and steamboat propellers. The ongincs and saw frames manufactured by tho Messrs. EASON have a wida reputation for durability and choapnosH, and aro said to surpass all Northern made engines in both thoso respects. Tho Messrs. EASON also manufacturo in great numbera the centrifugal pump, invented hy Mr. LEBUY, of th?B city. Tho firm consists of two brothers, Messrs. J. M. EASON nnd T. D. EASON. both well known as skillful mechanics, ontorprising capitalists, and public-spirited citizens, whoso business under takings havo resulted in immouso good to thiB oitv. W. t?. HACKEn'S CAB SHOPS, arc situated in King ?lroot, on tho east side, above John street. Before tho war Mr. HACKEU had an oxtonsivo car factory, nud being thoroughly con versant with the busiuosa, ho is rapidly rooupeva ting his rosourcos. Ho has now on hand a number of freight cars, and is proparcd to do planing, grooviug and tongueing, &c, &o. Tho engine which runs Mr. HACKOB'S machinen.- also supphos tho power for a grist mill next door, which belongs to anothor party. Mr. IlACKEn's yard pr?senla a neat and cleanly appearance, and in this rcspoct is an oxcoption to moat of the workshop yards that wo havo soon. THE PAEMETTO IB?N WORKS. Messrs. FBEEMAN &> PONDT, lato of FBEEMAN, PONDT ?fc Co., whoso establishment was at tho foot of Pinclmey stroot, now occupy tho old stand of Messrs. LOCKWOOD & JOHNSON, and do an exten sivo business in manufacturing and repairing ma rino and stationary boilers and enginos. Their foundry is extensive and complote, and they do a groat deal o? brass moulding and finishing. Just at the close of the war they did all tho United States Govornmont work, and wore constantly on gngod. in repairing tho machinery of tho many Govornmont steamers that WCTO thon in the port. They oipect soon to remove to a moro convenient and commodious situation. PHOSNIX IB?N WOBKS. Messrs. JOHN F. TAYLOB & Co. have an exten sivo foundry and finishing'*establi8hment, on tho north eido of Pinckney stroot, noar Cooper River; nud to judge by appoarnnco of industry nnd onterpriuo thcro oxhibitod, have as much work on hand aa they can well attend to. Mr. TAYLOB, tho aonior member of tho firm, was formerly tho scien tific machinist of tho old house o? CAMKBON & Co., and it was, to the best of our recollection, to his moohanical skill, knowloDgo anti attainments, that South Carolina was indobtcd for tho first machine ry manufactured in the State for tho purpose of rifling cannon. ^ WOBKBUOP8 OF MB. Mr. MOLEISH manufactures carts, drays, wagons, and plows, and repairs all k?Als of machinery. Ho is well known, and hiB businoss is extensivo. MESSES, WIGHTMAN AND onAPMAN Havo just oponed a machino shop in Quoen strcot, noar tho Mills Houoo, and are prepared to do all kinds of work in their line. Their front window is ornamontod with a modol engino woll worthy n visit from tho curious. From a cursory inspection of thou* premises and maohinory, wo judgo that they aro proparcd to outer upon a long and pros perous caroor of onterpriso, industry and onorgy. CONCLUSION. Wo have now given as full a notiee aa our limits will permit of snob of the principal maebino shops of Charleston as our attention has boon called to, and if wo havo unintentionally omitted any, it will give na pleasuro to describo thom in a future arti cle.
