The following letter from JOHN MOBBIBSET is published in the New York papers: ANSON HOUSE, SPRING STREET, > NEW YOBKJJNovember. 3,1866. J 3b Vic Editor of the New York Herald : SIB: My attention has been called to an editorial article in the Herald of thin date, in whioh it is stated that I have been indicted for "burglary and ~ther offences." It is a duty not only to myself, to tho people of the Fifth Congressional Dis t, for whose support I am a candidate, that I aid state the facto. When I was a boy, but ixteen years of ago, I and a few friends were en gaged in an altercation with a party of young men, and in that altercation thero was a door of a house ' kicked open. It waa charged that I was ono of those who kicked open the door and struck one of the opposing party. An affidavit was made hy one of the men engaged in the quarrel that I had broken open the door and struck him: I was in dieted for burglary and asBanlt and battery. The indictment for burglary waa never tried. The District Attorney regarded the charge as too frivo lous to be prosecuted, and summarily dismissed it. I was tried for the assault and battery, and found i guilty. lioforo entering upon my canvass for the posi tion to which I aspire, I referred to my past life, which, until within the last eight yoars, was one of adventure, in consequonce of tho poverty of my parents and tho few advantages I boa in my early youth. I commenced to labor for my own liveli hood and to assist in the support of my father and mother at the early age of ten years. At that time most boys ore under tho influences of domestic discipline, and have the advantage of regular edu cational training. Is it, thorofore, strange that I should have committed errors in my early lifo ? There aro few boys that have not been guilty of a ' ifling assault and battery. If I had. had innuen 1 1 parente and friends I would have been permit -irobably, to have escaped with a reprimand; aving no ono to say one kind word for me-a r, rough boy. working in a foundry-I suffered 0 slight penalty duo to my boyish folly. During my whole life no man can say that X have ever wronged him, defrauded him of a dollar, or oven broken my given word. I have bad, during the last eight years, business relations and connections with many of tho boat men of this city, and not one of them will say I am other than a man of ray word and of strict integrity. I have ondcavored ly my conduct to atono for the mistakes of my routh. Although successful in accumulating a compe nce, I have never forgotten that I was once poor. liavo never turned a poor man from my door, or oser ted a friend in his need, There has been much riticism in tho newspaper? in referen co to my bo g a candidato for Congress. It ia natural that I onld moot with groat opposition, A man who r?t$ passed through such varied and strango scones f lifo as I have must expect to make bitter ono lcs and warm friends, and je&louaios and hostili ce aro inseparable from political contests. But, r. Editor, I wi/1 stato to you my motives in being candidate for Congress. I have ono boy. who now twolvo yotwB of ago. who will havo tho none of the liest education this country can afford, '1 will have better opportunities than I had, bis ago, to start upon an honorable career. I _? a duty that I owe to him, my only child, to iy record as clear and honorable as posai tat my manhood may atono for tho folly and *oia of my youth, ond loavo behind mo mora orien which my son, in after years, may bo proud, and at will cast no shadow upon his path through I rospoctfully solicit, as an act of justice, that s reply should ho published in your paper. j- _JOHN MOBBfeSEY.
