Tiie itally JSfews. TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 28, 1866. [ADVERTISEMENT.] Firm ?n's Report to the Publisher of the New "fc ork I'ribnne on the Merits of Dr. J. P. Boynton's Gas Light Multiplier. No. 1147 BROADWAY A NOS. 64 A 68 MAIDEN LANE, 1 .Tune 1st,'1866. j To Samuel Sinclair, Esq., Publisher of the New York | i 2>t'6?ne: DEAR SIB: In accordance with your request, I have confidentially made such inquiries and investigations as I have deemed necessary to demonstrate to my own satisfaction the oharaoter and value of the new dis? coveries and invention of Dr. J. F. BOYKTON, and to enable me to state the grounds for expecting success in bringing these discoveries and invention toto general nae. I made myself acquainted with 'he statements put ? forth by the representative of Dr. BOYNTON which you handed me, and the leoorts from reliable scientific authorities, in relation to hi?Gas Multiplier discoveries and invention. I also made myself familiar with the very effl ient illustrative and testing apparatus for the practical comparison of the relative power of illumina? tion of the oity gas as usually burned, and the same j gas when passed through' BOYNTON'S Multiplier, to j which you called my attention. From this point I at once sought the proof in the nsnal manner-by practical observations with the test metre and photom?tre. I noticed what appeared to me to oe ^contradictions In statement and results, varying, m my of them, from my experience and contradictory to each other. These aberrations, however, were only apparent; for, upon examination, I found they arose from omissions in the reports of the different observers in regard to chances of pressure, burners, kc, at which and through which the gas was consumed. The emo? tion which every one mast experience upon first seeing the light as produced by the "Multiplier," is one of mingled surprise and admiration for its clear, mild, yet still and brilliant qualities, tho flame being much [ steadier without a chimney-burning in the open air than - the Aime of tho common gas with a chimney, a I most valuable property, which perfectly mc?:? a very grave objection and remedies a very serious defect in the light from ordiuary illuminating gas, and one which Is the chief ciuso ot its Injurious effects upon tho eye- , sight Notwithstanding the new light is much more brilliant, it is milder, mere grateful and very much less oppressive to the eye than the light of the common gas. I made the following experiment with an accurate test metre: With the pressure gauge atone inoh, the oity gas was consumed through a common 2>i feet Scotch Tip without the Multiplier, and the quantity of | light was only equal to the light produced by the Mul? tiplier with the consumption of 6-10 of a foot of gas. Hie quantity consumed of the oity gas without the Multiplier waa 25-10 of a foot, showing a clear saving of a fraction of over 75 per cent, in gas in favor of the | Multiplier. The nexc experiment was made with a 1% foot burner-a Scotch Tip. ; With this, under a 1 inch pressure, without the Multiplier, 12-10 of a foot of gas were consumed; with the Multiplier attached the con? sumption was only 2-10 of a foot, producing the same quantity pf light. These experiments were repeated to the point of en? tire and absolute demonstration, and proved beyond all ? doubt the extraordinary economy of the Multiplier, and its surprising power and capaoity for increasing the illu? minating properties nf city gas, as well as its remarka? ble steadying influence upon the light. In addition to those experiments, I did uot deem it nec? essary to pursue any very lengthened series of tests on my own account, as experts of undoubted character and ability had already reoorded tyir experience in every variety of form, and in a manner which fully confirmed the correctness of my own tests. Fearing that I might, by recording these remarkable facts, lead you and other friends Into error, I concluded to extend my observations and teats to the material contained in the "Multiplier," and whioh, through it, Imparts to the ordinary oity gas the greatly increased power of illumi? nation lndioated in the foregoing experiments. I de? cided to conclusively determine its nature and quali? ties, with reference to its gaiety as regards accidents by j careless usage, etc To do thia, Iprooured a vessel con? taining a portion of it, and submitted it to every re? quired teat, until I became satisfied that there was no J more danger In it than In oomoion alcohol. Ita re? markable property of increasing the brilliancy of flame la calculated to excite fears lest lt should prove (like naphtha and other carbonisera which have been brought into UBO from time to time only to be abac doned) tobe explosive and dangerous to handle. This I found was sot the case with regard to this new material, which is called by ita discoverer (Dr. BOYNTON) "Oarboline." I therefore unqualifiedly pronounce it neither dangerous nor offen(ivo, so far as its practical uses are concerned. Some eoores of attempts have been made during the i last few years to produce similar results to those I have | just desoribed, by carbonising coal gas, all of whioh bave practically failed. I have examined the effects of | many of the new contrivances, whioh have appeared to produce similar resulta as regards brilliancy, steadiness Of flame, economy, etc. Soma have had ona defeot, and some another. Most of them have had the unfortunate tendenoy to olog or stop up tne tubes after being used a short time; and, with all, some material defeot, upon a close inspection, ia invariably found. With BOYNTON'S Oarboline, however, judging by the condition of the burners after long-continued use, and from the state? ments of those who have used the "Multiplier" for two or three years, and tested the Oarboline in every way, there need be no fears ot tho want of success irom thia cause. In conclusion, I desire to remark that I hail this improvement as one of the greatest practical ? achievements of the age-not second even to the dis? covery of illuminating gas itself; because, by Dr. BOYN? TON'S discoveries and invention, light and heat, in their j most beneficial, inexpensive, and convenient forms, are brought within the reach of all.- I have thus far Bald nothing about the advantages whioh this new discovery affords for heating purposes. It will be found to be as useful in this direction as it is for lighting. Rooms can be warmed, food oan be cooked to perfection by it. Every variety of heating furnaces, even to the smelting of metals, and for glass manufacturing, and for innu? merable practical uses, oas bo heated very cheaply by it. Very respectfully yours, JOHN FIRMIN. METROPOLITAN GAS WORKS, ENGINEER'S OFFICE, 1 NEW YORK, July 17,1805. J To WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I cerlify that on the I7th of July, 1865, 1 made the fol? lowing tests of Dr. BOYNTON'S new improvement for in? creasing the illuminating power of coal-gas manufaotur ed by all companies of the United States, and applicable to public lampe, factories, dwellings, etc. These tests were made with the following results: TEST FIRST.
