The Dai Iv ISTews, TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 14, I860. LARGEST CLRtDLATIOPi ES THE STATE. LARGEST CIRCULATION Ci THE CITY. WT THE LIST O?r ijorrTB?RS re analning in the Postoffloe at tho end ot ?aoh week is published officially Im TECK DAILY NEWS every fri? day moralrw._ LOCAL MATTERS. tO- 8KB'SECOND AND THIRD PAGES. ~m OUBBELVES.-To-day, the fourteenth of August, eighteen hundred and sixty-six-being the first anniversary of the establishment of THE DAILY NEWS, and, consequently, also of the putting in position of the present "Local," it seems that a word or two will be expeoted from the placid youth who holds that distinguished position in this very popular journal. We are aware that in i many other newspapers gentlemen having posses? sion of that reputable situation have ondeavored to make everybody believe that the place they held was the most onerous in the world,-tbafc the duties ?re of the most laborious kind, and their remu? neration much lighter than an antiquated hank officer's head-in short, that they ure mill horses who do all the work and are only told of their' pay but these horrible insinuations we are compelled .m-jtftaMoally to deny, for we are more fat to-day by forty pounds than wo were a year ago. We admit that wa believe our constitution, in a great measure; has sustained us, and chat it may be partially the effect of education, for when we carefully reflect on the eating and drinking we have gone through for the twelve months we have been seated ia the "Local Editor's"' chair, we are convinced that a man must have served some time at it in youth to have been as successful as ourselves. The pleasant puff afforded na by the segare of TOGNI, C?OHBODEE, LORENTZ, &C, and the delightful and oooliug reflections which the cakes and eream so kindly bestowed on us by Madame FA - TIBS, TBABY and TULLY, are not to be effaced; while the generous wines and wholesome whiskeys whioh KEGLER, MOEAY, KERRIGAN, DAVIS, CHAFEE, BA DHNBOP and othera have strewn in oar path, are like roses that may have faded bat left a flavor that shall always float around us; and as for the beauties of the gin of RISLEY, they are only to be ima-</in>ed. We have, als", endeavored while here, to relieve the groaning tables of the Charleston, Mill* and Pavilion Hotels on several ocoasions, and have succeeded beyond oar most sanguine expectations. We have kindly accepted many in? vitations to private parties, where we have been a? pleased, and partaken of the hospitality ex? tended, to snob a degree, that we have never again been asked to return. We have, also, re? luctantly stood by and seen fire engines throwing up fabulous quantities of water, and then turned in with the companies and assisted in throwing down large modioums of the ardent, whioh we conceive has added largely to nnr reputation A* ?r Local. In X*ot, w^Wrcnjuttitrted ?io'oppoi'tunity to benefit the paper, and at the same time to allay our appetite, and if we have failed in either, it has sot btca for watt of proper exertion. Wo make these little confessions merely to show that the position of a Local Editor is not as die agreeable as the keeper of a penitentiary, and afso as a kind of hint that if ihe paper and we should live another year, that we will be prepared to accept similar, nay, greater, favors from our kind patrous. TEE CRYSTAL PALACE.-There was a crystal pal? ace in London, and there was a crystal palace in Paris, and there was yet again a orystal palace in New York, bat the Crystal Palace is, was, and is to be, in Charleston. It leas in the court, area or hollow square of the'Charleston Hotel-an un? sightly circular structure of dingy glass-within the luminous precincts of whioh people drank sherry cobblers and pkyed billiards, and drew largely on a vivid imagination to suppose them? selves within the luxurious domain of a grand .aloon. That stage of its existence passed away some months ago; the hotel court is empty and more pleasant, and the bar is in lees pretentious, but more comfortable, quarters. The Crystal Palace waB next a pile of rubbish that incom? moded Hayne utreet. Then, a mysterious circu? lar foundation might be seen at the southwest corner of King and Queen streets, and since that time the mystery has been developed with marvellous slowness. First, the half of a rusty iron column, and then another and another, until now it is very evident that the Crystal Palace is to reappear upon the face of the earth. For what purpose it is to be used, is a part of the mystery whioh the slow working Sphynx has not yet allow? ed to be unravelled. There were reports of ice? cream and strawberries in the first month of its transition, but they have vanished like a tale that ie told. It seems probable, now, that the spirits that haunted the palace of old will again make it merry with their sparkling ebullitions, and that its future will take its cue from its past. Commend ns to the Crystal Palace as an emblem of progress in Charleston. A Miss.-Some ?f our vigilant detective officers having, by their sharpness, obtained the ill-will of a portion of the gentry who can't understand the difference between meum and teum, several threats on the part of the latter have lately been made against the former, and- " letting daylight in," and " blowing out brains," and other awfully sanguinary expressions, have boen repeatedly heard in localities where these excellent young men mostly congregate. The officers heard of these gentle kindnesses towards themselves, but suffeied them to pa^s by as the idle wind.'believ ing, with tho rest of the world, that there was lit tle danger tobe anticipated from thieves; but on Sunday evening officer FARRELL, to his astonish? ment, was shot at ia his house, and, on coming to the door, another ball whizzed by him, both, fortunately, without effect. Tnese " taking gentle? men'had better stick to their old business, and leave off playing with firearms, else they may get their fingers, or some other portion of their bodv burnt. J' THE FINEST OF THE SEASON-WO have received through the kindness of Mr. E. 0. THARIN, Flour Inspector, a few bunches of the finest grapes we have seen this season. Mr. T. has our most grateful thanks for his courtesy. THE WORLD LAUGBS in its sleeve at the efforts of a few envious dentists to decry the SOZODONT. It is natural, perhaps, that they should dislike it sinoe its popularity interferes with the sale of their wares, but how ridiculous in thejn to show their spite when its animus is so palpable ! tus2 CiTiL BIGHTS BILL.-This mighty effort of th late Radical Congress, which has been conteste and contemned wherever it has reared its hydr head, has at last come up for a parting kick in th Palmetto City. A colored sergeant, stationed i this city, obtained some soda water tickets is sued by Messrs. E. E. BEDFORD & Co. Not wist: ing to let this capital lie idle, he essayed to quencl his thirst with a glass of soda, and tendered ticket in payment. To his utter astonishment hi moderate demands were refused, though the prc priolor offered to refund him for the tickets whia he had. The irate sergeant "'would listen to n such proposition, but immediately instituted pro i ceedings in the Provost Court against MessrB. I E. BEDFORD & Co. A colored lawyer conducto the prosecution, placed his client on tho broa* basis of the Civil Rights Bill, and defied th world. Unfortunately for their cause, this bi! has a very shaky platform, and one tilt from th( Court brought it once more to the ground. I was decided that a merchant has a perfect righ to raake any regulations he pleases and to stati to whom he will sell this question has beei contested in other cities with the same result, am the Court refusing to try it farther, it was ex punged from the docket. MAYOR'S COURT, August 13.-A sailor, who wat found lying down drunk in the street, and wh< stated that he had been hit on the head by th( boom of the vessel, so that two small drinks only affected him, was fined two dollars, and advisee hereafter to stoop whenever the sheet jibed. A baker, who certainly did not belong to the upper crust, for be was brought in as a loafer, picked up from a lot near the market, was also fined twt> dollars for sleeping out in ^the open air, A Milesian female, who had had a difference with a Teutonic woman, was placed before His Honor, and they both having stated their cass in a m'es olear and comprehensive manner, tho lady b: Irish descent was fined ten dollars, which she de dined paying for eleven reasons, the first o; which was that she hadn't it, and the Mayor begged to be exoused from hearing the other ten A man who was occupying much more of th? pavement than he was entitled to, and who said that he had not slept for two nights, was Anec five dollars, which not having tho ability to meet, he was persuaded to take charge ef the breac and water department for tho balance of the week, where he can enjoy any amount of sleep without the slightest fear of interruption. PROVOST COURT, August 13.-United States vs. Sol Swinton and Ben Swinton, colored.-Riotous oonduct. Mi OH ^ EL SCANLON deposed that he is private watohman at West Point Mills, and has charge of the wholo mill; on Saturday night, about ll or 12 P. M., Ben oame in very drunk and noisy; ha came into the yard contrary to orders; Ben, when remonstrated with, cursed him, and said he would Kill him, Ac; Mr. Scanlon told him to go away and go to bed; Ben refused and was very obstreperous; the men commenoed gathering, and Mr S., fearing a disturbance, told Sol to carry his brother off; but both turned on him, and Sol threw a brick at him, and some one out him on the band with some sharp instrument; Mr. Soanlon ran then to Mr. Jordan's house, and called on him to rescue him from thom; Mr. J. came out, when Sol hit him with a stiok and brought him down; they took refuge in Mr. Jordan's house, and, alter sending for the police, Sol endeavored to esoape, when Mr. J. fired upon him and pep? pered him in the baok with small shot. Mr. R. Jordan deposed : That about half-past eleven he heard a noise and a ory of murder; ne jumped up and run out, and found Scanlon bleed? ing; he took the* two Bwiotons and carried them to their houses; on the way there, Sol struck bim and ran; afterwards, he got his gun and fired, but having only small shot, did not damage him much. Sol deposed: That he was not there at the time; was in bed; heard a pistol shot; and be? ing told that his brother was shot, he ran out and assisted him to the best of his ability; he cid not g?t up until he heard the noise, and aid not ?au>* or assist in the row in any way. Ben stated : That he oame home late, and the watohman halted hine; he refused to stop, and the watchman fired at him; he had no right to halt him, and he caused the whole row. Andrew Mitchell (colored) deposed: That ho came home with Solj slept together; they heard a noise ..and a pistol shot; Sol run out, and afterwards he went out himself; he saw Mr. Jordan fire a pistol at him, and he told him to get away at once; had nothing to do with it, and knew little about it. The ease was turned over to a Military Com? mission. United States vs. Francis Williams (colored). Stealing Clothing.-Josephine Cross (colored) do posed that the defendant stole a suit of clothes oompiete from her. The frock was a purple mus? lin. The olothes were, in her trunk, which waa open. The prisoner got in a window and took the things. She missed the things whon she got up. The articles were worth about six dollars. Othei witnesses testified pretty much to the same effect, the only evidence against him being that he was seen to sell a knifein the market which had been taken from the house. The defendant stated that he ?was not in town at the time, and did not know the girls. The Court found Francie guilty, and sentenced him to pay $20 or sixty days' hard labor. United States vs. Anna Green (colored). Stealing.-MARY BRODERICK stated that the defendant was around in the morning before she went out. The house waB closed. When she returned the windows were broken open and several articles stolen. She knew no one but the defendant who had been about the house. The evidenoe not being strong enough to eonvict the girl, the case was continued and the defendant discharged. United States vs. Alan Homer (colored)-Steal? ing a watch.-Sam Betts swore {hat he was lying down corner of Market and East Bay streets; had tho watch; when he wan asleep some one was cut? ting at his pocket which awoke him, and he" saw the prisoner, run off. Sam testified that though he was asleep the watch was running, but could not get out of his pocket without absistance. The prisoner gave an emphatic denial, and he was fierce in his gesticulations; but it was of no avail-the dread fiat wes .sounded, Guilty, and thc prisoner subsided in confusion. The case of murder, reported a few days since, was referred to a Military Commission. Monday's docket is generally full, but it is sel? dom of such a bloodthirsty character as yester? day's presented. The colored population fire their blood with bad whiskey on Saturday night, and then go forth thirsting for notoriety and free lodgings at the Guard House. NEW METHODIST CHURCH IN COLUMBIA.-In the great conflagration of Fubruarv 17,18G5, the Meth? odists lost a large and commodious house of worship, an elegant new lecture room, tho best parsonage in the State, and also a Presiding El? der's (District) parsonage. From the Patriot ot yesterday we learn that the new chapel, dedicated on Sunday last, occupies the site of the leoture room above mentioned. It ie a plain square brick structure, capable of holding about four hundred Posons, to serve till the congregation Bhall be able to build a "second Temple," more in con? formity with their tastes. Rev?. N. TALLEY, WM. fflARTHf, J. GAGE, and WM. T. CAPERS conducted tue services, whioh are reported as having been highly impressive. BUSINESS NOTICES. Aue'ion Sales This Day.
