The last descendautof M mitin Luther, has just died at Mariahilf. ??er name was Catiiahink Luther. 8he was a Catholic, and so was her father. Mariahilf is well known for a celebrated pilgrimage in honor of the Virgin Mary, which takes place thero ovory year. The intornal rnvenao receipts of last Wednes day wore $32,000,000. The Secretary of the Treas ury will bo able, in his next statement of the pub lic debt, to show ita dacreaso by about $15,000,000 since June 30. Nearly all of the certificates of in debtedness have been callo l in. The Cbicopee manufacturing company used, during the last year, 5872 bales of cotton, and made 9,007,325 yards of goods. The revenue tax of 6 per cent, on sales amounted to $110,863.36, or 26 per cent, of the capital stock. Dividends of 45 per cent, havo been paid during the year. Among tho emigrants who passed through St. Paul, Minnesota, recently, representing almost every European nationality, wero a party of Fins or Laplanders, from the extreme north of Europe. They attracted a good deil of attention from their peculiar style of dress. They were, per haps, the first emigrants that ever came from that country to this. Now York City pays about 40 per cent, of the taxeB levied for the support of the New York State Government, and the value ot the taxable property is c-titnated at *622,59510_0) whilst that of the remainder of the State is $928,280,445, the total being $1,550,879,685. The latter wore not injure?.), but wero simply warned to ke?p within doors, the house being guarded on all sides by red skin?, ten of whom remained around the building until their comrades had gone to a safe distance. They then mounted their hornes and galloped away. A dispatch' from Memphis says that further searoheB into tbe counterfeit cave, discovered on July 25, discloses a mnoh larger amount of cur renoy than was anticipated. In addition to the articles previouRly mentioned, were fonnd $15,400 in United States compound interest notes, and 5 and 10 cents revenue stampa. The first train over the Southern Pacific Rail road, from Shroveport to Marshall, Texas, was run on Saturday last. Everything worked nicely and in perfect order. August 1 waa the time Bet for the completiou of this section of the road, but it was done four days ahead of that time. The CommisBionera of the Government will inspect the road early next month. Freight engage ments have already been made for over a month ahead, and the profits of the road will be $1000 per day. The New York News ot a late date says : ''Yes terday P. Y. CHARLESTON. ?i* WEPNE8DAY MORNING. AUGUST 8, 1866. "A WORD OF ADVICE." Thora is nothing people aro so liberal in bCBtowing as advice ; it is on? of tho fow commodities in which the usual quid pro quo is magnanimously dispensed with. On the othor hand, thore ie alt-o nothing rated so cheaply, valued so littlo, as tbiB same adviae ; and espcoially is this the cneo wben it iston dorod utiauked, and by parties not entitled to tbo position of counsel lore. Rut if tho un f irtunnto objoot of tho homily woro diepoeod to let even all this pass, and give tbo preacher a patient and roppnetful hearing, the "old Adam" would inevitably be aroused, upon his Hoeing the adviser assume a conscious air of superiority, patting the advipoe on the head, and with a patronizing tone of eolf rightoouBnees cast up all his peccadilloes, ronl or imputed- and perfectly intolerable becomes the mockery, when the derelict in dividual finds his Mentor notually ignorant of the subject on which he presumes to lectare. We are led to theso reflections by a very prolix ..loader" in the Washington "National Republican" of AugoBt 4, beaded '?A word of ndvico to the people of the South rospeoting the two Philadelphia Conventions." Know ing the Republican to be a conservative paper, we read the nrtiolo with an honest purpose to "mark and inwardly digest" the whole some counsel we there expeoted to find. But, sad to say, we were grievously disappointed. Tho writer opens his sermon with Judge Un derwood, not a very felicitous exordium. Ile says: "Judge John C. Underwood, of Virginia, and twonty-six others, residents of the 8tat?-s now un represented iu Congress, having eruburked in an effort to divide tho booth if not to defeat alto gether the friends of the Administration, to afford t lui Hunt horn people an opportunity for a heariog, of which they have hitherto been deprived by Congress, it seems to us proper to tender a word of advice upon the subject." If the "advice" ia specially intended for Messrs. Underwood & Co., the Republican might have saved its ink, for nothing uttered by any conservative organ stands even a shadow of a chance of icing read by that model judge or any of his notable confrater nity. A sentence, a little further on, however, shows us the mistake into which the writer has fullenv and which accounts for the singa lar inappropriatoness of the whole article. Ile says : .'Defeated in your pff?>r'a to break up tho re public, and loft, according to the ropresentatiouu of your leading men, more terrioly punished for your presumption th*n any peo ile in modern times, it naturally enough follow'?-d that you sub mitted to tin? Naiiomil Power with more or Kss appri-hcnaion for the future." Now we know very well that such im maculate "original loyalist!*" as Underwood, Hamilton & Co. would not feel compliment ed at being addressed in such a strain. They very properly would retort that they never made any "efforts to break up the republic" Even those of the signers to the call ot the Southern Loyalists' Convention, whoso record has not always been anti-Confederate, are now so thoroughly repentant of the error of their ways, that they have altogether for gotten they ever had such disreputablo con nections. Yet the writer in the Republican makes the singular mistake of considering these rene gades and Radical tools as the accredited rep resentatives of the South. Utterly oblivious, too, of the fact that every one of theno men belongs, soul and body, to the Radicals, and are merely acting at their bidding, the writer launches columns of "advice" at their deaf ears. We Bhonld, of course, have no objec tion whatever at his preaobing to Under wood, Hamilton, Wardwell and others (einoe these miserable sinners doubtless stand in great need of good preaching), but we pro test against these men being in any, even the most restricted sense, considered the repre sentatives of the South or her people. To be scolded, reprehended, and even threatened with serious punishment,-all for what we cannot help, is hard,-and we feel it due to ourselves, and the Southern people generally, to enter this protest. We have, in those oolumns, again and again urged the aooeptanco of the President's terms of reconstruction ; and we know of not a single ex-Confederate in the South who is not ready fully to co-operate with President Johnson and his friends. We bave ndvo. oated the Philadelphia August Union Con vention from the very commencement, lind were ploased to li d our sentiments favorably responded to from every quarter of the South. Every one of the StateB of the late Oonfede raoy will be fully represented in Philadel phia on Wednesday next. Tho signers of the call to the Loyalists Convention are faotionieb--men without po sition or influence, representing no one ; in the pay of the Radicale of the North, to get np another revolution. Their efforts unfor tunately have met with signal success in TVnnosseo, Now Orleans, Kiu_rm?ud and utlior places. Their path ia marked with blond. A wnr of races seems to bo their object. We want no Buota representatives, and wo desire tbo world to know that they aro nono of uh. ? ?. FIIlST-IiA TE SENSE. "VVo bavo lookod throughout our Southorn and Northern exchange, to find tho general tempor of the publio spirit at this critical junoture in tho afluir, of the nation, and cannot but expresa our lively admiratiou in the marked contrast in spirit ovincod. While the Northern Radical journals are manufac turing tolegramB and Bpeoial lettors from imaginary correspondent., filled with false statements with reforonoe to the recent outbreak in New Orleans, the leading South orn papora are counselling oalmnesB, o~be dienootolaw, and warning the id.ii.hho s against the arte and machinations of demagogues and designing men. In a late number of the New Orleans Picayune wo find the following, which is worthy of attention : "There- can bo no doubt in tho minds of all ob eorviug and honest porsons, that tho tempor, tho desiro and disposition of all classes of our puopln aro for peace, quiot and ordor, and that thuro ia not tho slightest occasion or excuso for any dis turbance of this condition of the popular mind. Artor the terrible scenes of commotion, war and trouble through which the country has passed, thoro was never ao groat a n.ocBBity, and ao oarnest a longing in the popular hcurt for a re sumption of tho nid rolati?>ns and ways of peace ful industry, social quiot and friendly feeling, which ODCo made this so happy and flourishing a country. Left to themselves, all clasBeB of our society would pursue t ?eir proper courin e, and maintain relations of a peaceiul and friendly cha ractor. Why, thou, aro thoy continually dis turbed, agitated and embroiled ? Why are trado, poacohil induftry, social confidence, interrupted and imperilled by tho alarms, apprehensions and exeitemuntB, which havo their origin in the d?ma gogie- plots of a Bet of drones who, unwilling to ougago in any useful employment, devote them selves entirely to the unholy and despicable busi ness of political agitation and pur tizan strife? It appears to us that our people, of all classes, belie their own claims to independence of charac ter, freedom, of opinion, and hostility to 'every form of tyranny over tho mind of man,' winn they permit themselves to be affected, innuonced and controlled by a gang of adventurers, whose only hopo of notoriety and profit is from tho revo lution and convulsion of society, and tbo over throw ot existing order and institutions? Why honst of the heroism of our ancestors, in tramp ling upon the sooptre of George III., when we are ready to yield to the silly and violent harangues of every conniving and audacious d?'magoguo who may 'split our cara' with bia valorous vaporing, and his incendi ,ry appeals to the lower passions and prejudices of our nature ? Is not tho tyranny of the so-called faction or party-leaders -dema gogues of the very lowest character which now prevails ia this country-one of the most repul sivo forms of despotism to which an enlightened people oao be subjected ? A melancholy sight it is to seo the most intelligent, spirited and nigb minded people in the world controlled by a class of men, for whom they have no personal respect; whom they would not trust in any of the affaira of life, who are socially tabooed for their vices or their worthleeenese, and yet iu politics are per mitted to exert no small power over the public sentiment?, and tho order and peace of society, and the integrity and Justice of the Government? When are wo to be rid of this baneful thraldom, of this dohaeing subjection, and the hone.-t people restored to their free and unbiased direction of their own alTuir?, opinions and feelings ?" WANTS.
