Tho Secretary of War reports the number of priso.ere held and died on both Bides during the war as '.follows : "Number of Union prisoners South, twt-iiiy-fix thousand nine, hundred and forty ; number of rebel prisoners North, two hun dred thousand ; number of Union prisoners diod, twenty-two thousand five hundred and twenty six ; number of robel prisoners died, twenty-six thousand four hundred and thirty-six." Tlio Qoveriior-General of Cuba has published an official contradiction of the reported insurrec tion at Puerto Principe. He says the rumor grew out of a collision between a small party of the . people di that city and a squad of Spanish boI diers, whit h amounted to nothing serious. There is no trm li in the reported landing of two thon Band Chilians and tho arming of the negroes by foi'tthe planters. The extreme boat of the preceding week ran the bill of mortality up to the extraordinary fir-ure of 716. . The United States Consul at Antwerp, writing to the State Department under date of July 1st, says: "The cholera has recently appeared in this city. The deaths from it for the last two days have been about forty, but on one or two days the deaths have been as many as seventy five. I fear we must regard it as having assumed an epidemic form. I would suggest that vessels arriving in the United States from Antwerp should be scrutinized by our quarantine." Official cou-us returns of tho city of St. Louid make tho white population 204,327. Information bas been received by the Navy De partnn-nt of the capture of a ?laver in Pensacola Bay, Florida, by the United States sloop Augustine, having on board 150 Ireedmen from Mobile- Ala., and bound for Cuba. The system has been to en list colored laborers above Mobile, run them up the railroad to Greenville, Ala., snitch on to the Pensacola Boad, and run down to a plantation in Florida, near the Escaladia Biver, place the ne groos upon flatboats, float down to tide-water, .hip thetn on board sloops, and, passing by Pen sacola, gain the sea and land their human freight in. slavery. The month of July has boen ohnrnotorized by a general .stagnation of all branohoB of bu8ine88, and our morohanta ooncur in tho opinion that greater dullness has prevailed than baa ever marked any month of previous healtby seasons. The transactions in the export trade have been exceedingly light. The stringency in the money market, with tbe limited supply of cotton on hand, combino?! with the European war,have prevented extensive purohases oither for foreign or domestio shipment. On the other hand, the impor t trade has been more activo, and the business of the past month compares favorably with any previous month of the past fiaoal year, when we take into consideration tho advanced season, the high rate of coin, and the absence of country demand. THE ANDERSON PRISONERS. For several dayB past thero have been ru mors afloat in this city regarding the fate of the Anderson prisoners, confined at Castle Pinokney, in Charleston harbor. We beard these rumors on Sunday, but as we could not trace them at tho time to any responsible source, wo refrained from giving thom pub licity. Wo now have ascertained tho facts, and take pleasure in laying thom before our roaders. While their ouse is familiaT to mnny in our community, there may be others unacquaint ed with it, nndfor their benefit we will givo a brief resume of these interesting trials. Three United States soldiers, two privates and one corporal,belonging to the First Maine Battalion of Volunteers, were murdered at Brown's Ferry, Auderson District, S. C, on Sunday night, Octobor 8, 18G5. Information was lodged next morning with the command ant at ?uderson, who instituted au investiga tion, and upon tho testimony of persons liv urnst of severul oitizens. Some of tbeso were afterwards released, but F. G. Stowers of Hart county, Ga., Crawford Keys, his son Robert Keys, and Elisha Byrem, all three of Andorson Diotrict, S. C, wero sent on to Columbia for trial. After they had remained in jail at that place Bomo weeks, tbey were brought to this city, and here tried before a Military Commission, composed of Major-General Charles Devens, Brigadier General Gakdner, Lieutenant-Colonel Clitz, Captain Pyne, and Lieutenant Bailey; Lieu tenant-Colonel A. J. Willard, 35th U. S. C. T., being the Judge Advooate. The trial was very long and tedious, and at last resulted in the conviction of the prison ers, who wero sontenoed to death. General Sickles, in revising the findings of tho Com mission, approved the sentence of Stowers and Crawford Keys, but commuted that of tho other two to imprisonment for life in the penitentiary of Now Hampshire. Tho time for the execution of the sentence had been Bet, when exeoutive olemenoy was in terposed iu their favor,-the President of the United States having Bent a reprieve. Nothing further was heard or done in the matter till about three wooka ago, when ap plication was roado to the Judge of tho Uni ted States Court of the District of South Carolina for a writ of Habeas Corpus, to be served on General Daniel E. Sickles, the Commanding General of this Department, requiring him to produce the said prisoners, confined under his charge in Castle Pinokney. The writ was issued, but the prisoners were not brought into Court; General Sickles as signing as hiB reasons, 1. That those parties Jiad been tried, convioted, and sentenoed by a Court, acoording to the proclamations and ordern of the competent Department of the Government. 2. That these partieB had laid the whole matter before the President, whose order touching their disposition is binding upon bim [Gen. Sickles]. And, 3d. That he hod no power by which he oould ?'in any manner interfere with the present disposition of these parties, without the further order of the President of the United States." Upon motion of the prisoners' counsel, tbe mattor was then referrod to the President.
