I'iie JL>a,iiy _LN ews. THURSDAY MOBNiNG, AUO?8T 2, 1-66. State Item?. Tho Columbia South Carolinian, o? yestorday, gives tho following further particulars of tho mur der of Mr. Lane, of Nowborry: It ia now dofinitolv known that several poreona wero engaged in tho murder of tho unfortunate victim, and all the circumstances indicate that thoy had prepared tbo way for tho committal of the crime. - Two young mon named Keller and Ln.no (a eon of tho murdered mun), woro aBleop on tho piazza and woro awakened u> dod a wliito man and three or four nogrooB Btanding ovor them. By theao thoy woro bound and kept under guard, the kill ing having already taken place and tho robbery of tbo prcmiBca commouced. tioarcoly anything of valuo was loft, oven to tho bacon and provisions. Thcro woro $8500 iu gold and silver and $2200 in gronnbacka in tbo house, all of wbi.h we loam waa taken. Au soon as the robbora had disappeared, tho young mon freed themselves from thoir bonds, and thon for tbo first timo the full measure of the crime was unwin known. Tho alarm was imme diately given, and parties commenced to search for the perpotrators. One of tho teamsters on the plantation, who but recently accompanied Mr. Lane to Columbia, was arrested and made to bring hack a quantity of bacon, which he did att<-r tho iapse of an hour; and, on a second trip, which lasted only fifteen minutos, he brought back moro bacon and the dogs that had proviously been taken away. He is said to be tho brother of the man John, killed near Columbia by Mr. Starling, and, with three others, is oonfln.d in tho Nowborry Jail. Of the white man nothing is yet known. At a public meeting hold at Lexington Court House on Monday last, the following gentlemon were appointed to roproeent the District in the Convention which mot yesterday at Columbia: Hon. Jj. Boozer, Dr. F. S. Lebyie, Dr. E. 8. J. Hayes, Major J. II. Koon, Oapt. G. S. Swxoebt and Major EDWARD Kinsleb. The Abbovillo Danner of yesterday says : A duel was fought at Mosoley's Ferry, on the Abbeville side of the Savannah River, on Satur day morning last, between a Captain Birch end a Mr. Knight, young lawyers from Elberton, Ga. Tho distance was eight puces, and there was to be no proposition ol' adjustment previous to the third fire. At the second Uro. bowover, Mr. Knight waa shot through both thighs. The wound, though painful, ia a noah wound, and not regard ed dangerous. As usual, the fight, we hear,- waa about a lady. Yesterday's Orangoburg Carolina Times states that they will commence work on the bridge across the Edisto at this place on August 13th next, and that no oue can pass over it for several days perhaps not for a week. The same paper also mentions that after a long spell of hot and parching weather wo were re freshed on Sunday night by a miniature deluge which may eave the corn and other plants that the sun had noarly derlroved. From all parts of the District we have hoard accounts of thin oom and small cotton, Buffering from the oombined attack of drought and grass, bat it is to be hoped that this rain will effect a change for the better, and the farmers will recover their spirits as well as their crops. -?on The Minority Report on tbe Assassination Complicity Case. Representativo RooEns, on the 29th, made a minority report, signed by himself only, as a member of tho Judiciary Committee, to which waa referred an investigation as to what compli city, if any, Jeffebson Davis and other* had in tho assassination of President Lincoln. He save for somo reason or reasons, not fully stated, the majority of the committee determined to throw in lu-* way every poeBible impediment, not only in any assistance ho might try to render them in what be considered a common task im posed upon them by the House, but even in hie working out any conclusions for himself, when it became evident that iu this thoy would not only have none of his assistance or fellowship, but rosented deeply any attempt of his to render it. The papers were put away from bim, lockod in boxee, biddon, and, wheo bo asked to hi-u them, he was told, day after day and week after week, that he conld not havo access to them. It was not until noon of Friday that he was allowed freely to look through them nnd derivo any knowledge baaed npon their ox a min at ion for the purposes of this re port. Had the majority pormitted him to use the customary privileges, but from whioh they ex cluded him, t his report would have been of moro benefit to the cause of justice and truth than he could now hopo to make it. Mr. Bogara says the main portions of the testimony alleged to connect Davis aud others with the assassina tion of President Lincoln was all ex parte, and in the absence of uny person cross-questioning and explaining it. The method of tho exami nation of Sanford Conover, tho principal witness and originator of all the oral tes timony relevant, presented by the Bureau of Military Justico to establish the guilt of Davis waa this, viz : The testimony he had given at the assassination mock trials on the 20th of May; 1865, was read to him, when he said it was all true. Mr. Bogers examined at rome length the testimony of Oonovor, Merritt and others, to show its worthlessnesa and total unreliability-that of the last named boiug wholly invalidated by bis con tradictions, would amount to nothing unsup ported, with its evident perjuries unexplained, when Mr. Holt forwarded it with the rest, he ac companied the wholo of it with an explanatory argument, every scntenoo of which is redolent with the logic of prosecution, and to him (Bog ers) it almost felt as if it revealed something of personal motive in tho conviction. The sending of any argument to convince the committee waaia itself a btef>-of doubtful propriety, in conclusion, he say.-*: '*I cannot agree with the statement made iu the concluding paragraphs of the majority re port, 'that it is tho duty of the Executive Depart ment of the Go vor nmen i, for a reaaonable time and by tho proper means, to pursue the investi gations for tbo purpose of ascertaining the truth.' The Government," Mr. Bogota* says, "through tho Bureau of Military Justice, has pursued Ita investigations over one year with the rigor of military power and the expenditure of vast amounts, and in Conover, Campbell, Snevel &, Co. we have the result of iheir labors. How long is this man to ho under these imputations without even a preliminary examination ? This is worse than the treatmt iib of D'Enghein-worse than the quicker cruoltios of an auto da fe. Disagree ing with the majority report on this point as on most othors, I beliovo it to bo the duty of tho authorities holding Davis to give bim a prelimi nary examination, as proscribed by the usages and practices of all civilized nation?. If in that examination it be found that there remains any thing unsatisfied,' it is the duty of the Govern ment to immediately hand him to the civil author? ities, that he and the others accused may have opportunity to show to the world the malice and falsehood of theso wicked accusations. Mho dis coveries of the doings of the Bureau of Military Justice render it a duty that whatever bo done in this matter hereafter be done in a loss suspicious locality, and freed from secrecy. Evil.motives alone fear the light. The Government' of this country should have in this matter nothing to hide or fabricate in darkness. As regards the trial for troaeoii, that is already boforo the proper tribunal, and I havo only to exprese surprise that the judicial branch of tho Government should have so loug deferred the trial, and that a prison er could be ready for trial so long, ask for it so Eorsistcutly, and yet, in defianco of law and usage, e so long douiod." -8 e> ? A faetX young fellow in the stsgo box of a Paris theatre wrote this note in pencil, and sent it by tho box-openor to a pretty aotress, who, while playing, had won his heart: "Mademoiselle, wheu one sees you, ono loves you. When one lev s you, one would confess It te you. When confession is made, one would provo it to you-so won't you do mo the pleasure to sup with me after the perform ance? My name is Thousand France." Tho ac tress at once replied : "Sir, I havo received your noto; there aro stupider mun. I have reon your face; th?re aro uglier men. I live Bue de Ia Vic . ;2'""o. You will itnow.no more, for my name is More Than That." . ?? *' .?.. . . ' ' e . . . . '. ?? . . . -, <K M-??S Pu&K. BAOUN bTHlPS, i,.Uli), IX I It A FLOUR, (HF.Ksi?, ?V.o.
