It cannot be denied th-t 'hero is at the present day more indications of progress and advance ment of the general interests of this section of our State than any anterior period has ever wit nessed; and it may not prove uninteresting to our readers to compare our present condition to that of Southwestern Georgia some thirty years ago. Notwithstanding the fact that her pooplo are still to a great extent laboring under the effects of tho late war, thero is a display of more enterprise and business energy than at any previous time. Many yours ago the Stato of Georgia, by lot tery, gave her public lands to hor ci tizona in that part of the State known as Southwestern Georgia. They were laid off in large tracte, the lots in some - count ioa containing four hundred and ninety acres. At that timo these lands were thought to be worthless, and many fortunate drawers of these land lotteries never granted them?that is, paid the sum of five dollars for tbo grant. About 1830 some investigation proved much of the land to tho valuable, wliioh induced specu lators to buy it up, osoecially that portion situated between tho Ghattahoocboo and Flint Bivers. These lands were in a short time populated with emigrants from this and other States, and so rapid was tbo improvement that 1860 found the flourishing cities of Savannah, Macon and Colum bus, and the towns of Albany and Fort Gaines, connected by railroads, and a number of other important railroads projected?some of them par tially complotod. So many of thoso great arteries of trade, so recently made in a new country, are certainly sufficient evidence of its great im portance. So, it will be seen that in the space of less than thirty years, we find the foreste of pine, tbe imaginary sea of swampB, jungles and "worth less lands" of thoso* who did not oare to pay the amount of five dollars for the grant of lots drawn from tbe public lottery, converged into a modern Egypt?the Eden ot the sunny South ?% land pre eminent in agriculture, great in commerce, and literally of "milk and honey." Within a fow months we have known more than one of tbe citiz? ns of our own county to make tours of inspection in other parte?a little dis couraged by the present state of affairs?princi pally in most oases by the loss of so ?muob of the cotton crop by tbe indisposition of so many of the freedmeo to work. But what do they say when they return? "This is about as good as any." Considering the condition of our whole country, politically, there is no eoction in tbe late Confede racy which has been leas affected by the unnatu ral changes in our social system, brought about by tbe war, than our own. The diabolical at tempts of quasi philanthropists to damage our lanas still more by the instigation of a war of races, bas met ?nth poor success, and we find the negroes generally nearer their proper sphero than in many other section?). Yodno Women im America.?On this subject a German writer in Leipsio Gartenlaube ponders as follows: "It is a singular phenomenon that beau ty on the American continent has been republican ized. There the fair sex has not only every where the same feelings, wonts and passions, which it acqflires in tho institutions formed in the whole country after ono model, but likewise tbe same external charms, which it possesses in a higher . degree than' ?h'y other nation. This seems tobo .* /the result of the uniformity of manners, cue torn a and tbe social position, and an American salon filled with young girls, in fact resemblos a bod of hyacinth)?. You no where meet with coarse, un couth features, or striking corporeal deformity, and there no one could say 'le laid c'est le beau? (whatis ugly la beautiful). These charms of ex ternal appearance, however, belong rather to the facial features than to the figuro or deportment. A o assio figure, a full, round arm, and well pro portioned limbs, are rarities."
