the communication under the above head in our yester?

curred. In the sentence stilting that the policy oi the

negroes" were left out, which gave an entirely different
meaning to thejeentence.

A TOUCHING INCIDENT. - Cn the 16th Instant, the dav I
of the celebration in commemoration of the Confederate |
dead, in one of our oity grave yards, after tho ceremo?
nies had been performed and the crowd dispersed, a re?
spectable looking colored woman was seen to linger be?
hind, sit down Upon a gr,ive, bury her face in her
hands, and Weep bitterly. A friend of ours, who
holds with JUVENAL, ["NMl humanuni a se alienum
este") observing her, became very much interested.
With native kindliness of manner he addressed her and |
Inquired the cause of her j;rief. Won by his sympa?
thizing tone, she unburdened her heart to him in alter?
nate words and sobs. The grave on which sho sat was
that of her former young master, who had been killed
In battle during the late wai. He had been her charge
In his infanoy and boyhood, and In his manhood he
was her pride and her delight. His de?ds of gallant
daring had been her boast, and it was tho wish dearest
to her heart to see him relrarn victorious and honored
to the home whioh he had fought to protect Heaven
had decreed otherwise; and now while a conquered
people did honor to tho memory of thor defenders,
ehe, poor, helpless, faithful woman, wept over the grave
of him to whom sho had looked for protection and sup?
port In the days of her ago and infirmity.

' MAJOR'S COURT, WEDNESDAY MOBNINO, June 20.
One half the world does not know how the other half
Urea, and the glimpses that may be had into the ufo of
that other half every morning at the Mayor's Court are
not of a character to tempt to a further view. The few
minutes spent there this morning were enough to
tempt any one belonging to the ono half of the world to
wish for the callousness of a Podsnap, which, by the
mere waive of an ar m, could dismiss the disagreeable
other half forever from the mind.
First appeared an abjVct individual eomo fifty years
of age, without a coat, charged with being found drunk
in the streets. He had nothing to say in his defence,
and was fined $5.
Secondly there appeared a hardened, disgusting look?
ing wretch, with a beard three days old, and a mis?
shapen mouth besmeared with tobacco juice. Ho also
was drunk in the streets, and was fined $5. He depart?
ed reluctantly, being forced out by the police, while he
mumbled some unintelligible protest against the treat?
ment which ho received.
A wretched looking woman, well-known about town
asa beggar and a drunkard, appeared against a burly I
individual, likewise of ill repute, for having beat her !
With a stick. She had a horrible gash on bur forehead,
which she said was inflicted by the prisoner. But the
prisoner said that the woman waa drunk and fell out of
bcd. As neither of them looked as if they could tell the
truth, and if the charge was true the crime was too
great for the cognizance of the Court, bis Honor referred
the oase to a magistrate.
Last appeared a woe-begone and mortified Rhode
Islander, who looked as if he might once have been a
decent man. He was caught last night sleeping in a
cur with negroes. He told a doleful tate of having been
in government employ, and now having nothing to do.
Re promised to use his utmost exertions to reach a
more northern latitude, and, with a few words of warn?
ing, his Honor discharged him.
AND STILL THEY COME TO SHH.-The fam e of Prof,

slmost continually crowded, and "still they como."

POLAR ROOT BEEB-SODA WATEB-MINEBAL WATER.
A new drink, which ls very refreshing, known as the
Polar Root Beer, for what reason we cannot say, has just
been introduced into this city by Mr. E. E, BEDFORD,
To judge by the orowd which we saw in his storo in
King-street, opposite Hasel, just before dark yesterday
evening, the said Polar Root Beer is destined to become
very fashionable. Mr. BEDFORD has also constantly on
hand the greatest variety of syrups manufactured from
the original fruits, for the purpose of flavoring the deli?
cious Soda Water which is daily dispensed , to'thirsty
hundreds at his fountains. Ho has now as many as
twenty different kinda of syrup. Besides Polar Root
Beer for tb o gentlemen and Sodawater for both soies,
there can always be had at Mr. BEDFORD'S establishment,
for the benefit of invalids, Mineral Waters from the most
celebrated springs of this continent and Europe, to say
nothing of the Egyptian elixir obtained from the sources
of the Nile.
