casion to dovoto considerable epaco to an aocount
of the de facto nud contemplated improvements
in Bomo of tbo firat-claBB b?tela in this city. In
this I am called upon to record tbo contemplated
project ojt V grand improvement in the city itsolf,
which, when Bucdoeafullv carried out-as it no
doubt will ho in time-cannot fail to'r omi It in ren
dering New York city in all respects equal in point
of magniQconco to the celebrated Froneh capital.
Tbo propoaed plan looks to the spoedy conatruc
tion of magnificent boulevards in the upper por
tion of the city, extending from the intersection
of Filly'Ninth-stroot ami Eighth Avenue HB high
np aa On??Hundred and Firty-Kirth-atr?ot. '.These
boulevards will furnish tbo most beautiful drives,
meandering in various directions throughout the
entire BUburbB-oaoh ono terminating, or rather
beginning, from the entrance to the Central Park,
at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Fifty-Ninth
strcot, as Btated above. Tbo conatruotiou of these
boulevards has boon authorized by the Legisla
ture, and tho work, which haa for some tiipo boon
well under way, ia in the hands of the Park Com
missioners.
The excitoraent croated, especially in the minds
of the thirsty Oerman population, by. the nxac
tiona and prohibitions of tho Excise Law, is not
only unabated, but ia ateadily on tho inoroaso.
