There was a pleasant social gathering in th evening, and we learn from those who were pre sent, that everything passed off very handsomely all handB enjoying themselves. "Ladies vaut and p-allant knights, Filled Tara* a hall with beauty bright." The Hibernian Hall was orowdod last night wltl a fair and fashionable assemblage. The seem presented a brilliant array of female lovelines and admiring gentlemen. The hall wore a fair aspeot. The eye was dazzled with the glitterin splendor of the decorations, calling to mind th fabled palaces of the East. Music added he charm. The tables, upon minute inspection, pre Rented a vast variety of ingenious and beuutifi articles; among them we observed many spec mens of handsome needlework. The floral deoc rations were very tastefully arranged, and brougr. forcibly to mind that we have just entered upo the flowery month of May. A fine work of art attracted out* attention? beautiful oil painting of Shylook and Jessica, b Fr.Aoo. In tono and coloring this is an exquisit picture, showing the hand of a master. It is del oately and highly finished. Tho figures stan forth in bold relief. Tho drapery of Jessica i particularly well executed. Tho character e: prcsnod in the face of Se.yi.ock proves to us the tho.artist had caught something of the inspiratic of the poet, whilo the exquisite beauty of tb Jew's daughter is a fine embodiment of whs Bhaksf-eare has made so familiar to us. Th picture adorn b Mrs. Colonel Rinqoold's table, at Is to be raffled. We would advise all lovers of tl fine arts to examine for themselves, and not loi the chance of making it their own. Tnx TnucK.?Wh atovcr contribntes to tho inte rest and benefit nf tho city wo always tako groat pleasure in noticing. Wo wore highly ploasotl on yesterday, at tho iuBpoction of the Track of tho Charleston Hook and Laddor Company, at tho atoro of Mosers. Natiian & Ottolenotji, corner of Mooting and Wontworth Btrcots, which arrived hero on board tho steamer Saragossa. It is de oidedly a most boantifui pioco of mechnnism and admirably constructed. The Track is an es euntial portion of tho Firo Department, and one whioh should liavo been in nso hero long ago. In length it is 54 feot from tongue to tillor, has five laddors ranging from 42 to 10 feet, four axes, two picks, ono crowbar, and twenty-seven books. Its design and intention is principally for the safety of human lifo as woll as tho palling down of walls. It is a great desideratum in the Firo Bopartment, and will prove, no doubt, of vast importance here, as it has in other cities whore it has been used. The number of members, including officers and mon, according to tho charter, is restricted to forty, bat at present thoy only numbor thirty, in cluding officers and men. The following comprise the officers : GEORGE A. HILTON, Foreman. J08. A. MORGAN, Assistant Foreman. JOB. BILTOS, Secretory. A. H. BARBER, Treasurer. Court of Genebal Sessions ?This Coart met yesterday morning as usual, and proceeded, in tho first place, to tho trial of Dominios Mouton, who had been previously arraigned for Qrand Larceny. The accused was brought to the Btand, and the counsel assignod bim by tbo Court, Abher D. Cohen, Esq., appeared for the d?fonce. Tbo prisoner exorcised bis right of challongo, and after tho jurors selected wero ?worn, tho Attornoy Qeneral explained to the Jury the law under which tho indictment was drawn, and called tbo witnesses for the State. Tbo testimony was to tho effect that on the afternoon of some day in February last, P. Mul kai went into Cook's* bar-room, corner of Church and Chalmers streets, having then in his posses sion $370 in treasury notes and bank bills; ono due bill for $2000; one duo bill for $185; gold coin tc the amount of $168; a pocket-book,and a watch and chain. That he there took onu drink and imme diately beoame insensible, in whioh atato he con tinued for six hours, and when he revived fount: himself at tho corner of Market stroet and EastBay that be was siok from tho effects of tho liquor foi five or six weeks; that some man, supposed to b? ' tho prisoner at the bar, invited Mule ai into th( bar-room, aud was thero when ho drank; that tin ' matter was reportod to the police; that they ar rested Cook and obtained some of the mono: from him; that on information obtained by office: Coates, Mobton was arreated, wben he stated tba . he had taken the pooket-book with $160, and th? , watch and chain of Mulkai; but that ho had takei ? it from him for safety, as be was lying on the floo , too drunk to tako care of it himself, and that b , had given it over to Saunderb. No evidence was offered on the part of tho ac cused, and the Atterney-Qeneral addreased th Jury on behalf of the prosecution. Abheb D. Cohen, E.-q., then commented on th evidence in behalf of the prisoner, contendin that it was Insufficient to fasten guilt upon bin that he had acted with a view to tbo interest c the prosecutor, and had surrendered what he ha taken to the officer of tho law; also submitting t the Court that there should have been some ev dence of the genuineness of the billa and notes. Q The Jury retired after the charge of the Judge and returned with the verdict cf "Not Guilty." ' The next case called was the State vs. Febqdbo and Smith, for nuisance in carrying on a turpoi tine distillery within the city limits, and Qen. Jai Conneb appeared for the defence. ! After the facts of the case were presented i ? evidence, the counsel for defendants contends a that the present indictment must bo sustained, y Bustainotl, either on the groaad of inoonvenionc g or danger. That annoyance was a penalty whic e one had to pay for living in a city?cited the cat r of a tinner carrying on his business in the Temp i- in England, to the groat disturbance of three la il chambers?whioh was held not to be a pnbl L- nuisance; and, as to danger, maintained that ev< i- tho reasonable fears of men were not bufficien it but thero must bo actual and positive dangc n Tho Qeneral referred to several authorities support of his views, and concluded by urging tl a Jury not to interfere with legitimate busine y from which no dam age was proved to have arise e Attorney-General Haynereplied : Ho stated th i- the question of nuisance in similar cases had n d before been fairly brought before a court of tli la community, from their extreme sensitiveness : t> to interfering with the growth and prosperity it business. Such was not the case in other citit m Disputed the position taken by the defence th e the apprehension of danger was not sufficient it constitute a nuisance, and contended that the is existed no necessity for carrying on turpenti .'? distilleries in the oity?that the business wou io suffer no injury by being conducted elsewhei ee and that there waB positive danger and hurt property in their vicinity. Col. Hayne also a verted to the law in support of his positions, is Jndge Gloves charged the Jury as to the li a- and their duty in relation to the case, and they i er tired to deliberate. as The Court then adjonrned. to FnovoBT Codbt, May 2. -XJ. 8. es.
