In? receipts of Cotton at this point since last week's
roport foot up one hundred and eighty-six bales of Sea I
Sslaad and nineteen hundred and tan bales of Upland [
Cation. Throughout the present week the Cotton mar?
ket bas had a declining tendency, and the sdi in prices
ajnoe cir last Btatem nt, up to tbs close of business
ysAterday, amounted to about two (2) cents per lb. This
essie of things has been largely owing to the difficulty
in Balling both foreign and domestic exchange, and the
eonsaquent tightness of money matters. Holders, in
nedor to eU'ect sales, have boen componed to submit to a
gradual -decline, and good Middling Cotton was sold here
ywtorday at 46c per lb. We quota :
Middling to Strict Middling.44@i5o.

TO THE
M?dHMTS OF Tl SOUTH.
THE UNDERSIGNED, WHOLESALE DEALERS,
?drice 70V. of the fact that Charleston ia ?gain a
market' for tho purchase of goods, and in view of
the early opening of the spring trade, wa beg to solicit
the resumption of the patronage so liberally extended
to this market in the past.
We are aware that many old and respected firms win
he missed from our number, but many familiar names
will bc found in new associations, ready to supply the
wanta of tho Trade, as of yore, and other old and new
firms will bo added to our number at an early day.
The cash and short credit system haring been unlvar
sally adopted in all the Northern markets, ws are neces?
sarily compelled to adopt alike system as the only safe
one on which to conduct business, and tho hoary per?
centage once necessary to oorer bad debts will now bo
avoided. Small profits and quick returns will be the
rule, and under its working we hope not only to restore
to oar ancient city its former prosperity, but to extend
her trade to the full extent of the capabilities ber ex?
cellent geographical position and natural adrantages
afford Our interest and ambition combine to stima*
late us in attain ing this result
The 8c ut h Carolina Railroad is now open te Oolam
bis{ and its President has officially informed us that the
Augusta hue will be completed to Blackrille this month,
ona that on the first of February he will receiTs through
freight .0 Augusta. A Une of steamers to Savannah will
afford facilities for shipping in that direction. It is our
purpose to have in store by tho last of February a oom*
piet? and varied assortment of goods in oar rotpecH.e I
lines adapted to the spring trade, and evory exertion |
shall be made to crom?te yonr Interests.
Wa extend to you the hand ol commercial fellowship,
and solicit your co-operation and patronago in ourofforts
to make Charleston tho centro of southern tra jo. Give
us the encouragement we ask, and yon will cnj'jy all the
