Cons.-A lot of 1000 bushels damaged sold at auction to-day, at prices ranging from 20 to 80 cents bushel, according to quality. NASHVILLE, Tenn., Do-ember 29.-The river is still rising. The water is- probably thirty-five feet deep on the shoals. 'A fleet of fifteen coal barges, from the Cum? berland coal mines, in Kentucky, arrived here to-day. There aro no means of crossing tho river at this point except by skiffs. Active preparations aro in progress for the construction of a suspension bridge. One cable of the bridge was thrown across yesterday. Cotton is firm, with an Increased demand. Prides range from 38c. to 42>ic.-an improvement of about lc. on a pound on ah qualities. Shipments and receipts light. Nen- York Markets? MONEY MABKET. NEW YORK, Friday, Dec. 29, G P. M.-Thc gold market TOS dull throughout thc day, aud, after opening at 145>,'@1?', it cloded steady at 145?4. There was more de? mand from borrowers, and loans were generally made by paying two per cent, interest upon the currency advanced. A large amount has been sold "short." in anticipation of the effect of the payment of the January coiu interest on thc public debt, aggregating $9,735.700. Foreign exchange waa duh, on thc basis of 109 ."4 for prime bankers' bills at sixty days on England, and 109@109li for otber grades. Tho leading drawers found their bills difficult of sale at the former rate, owing to the advance of American securities in London, under the favorable effect of thc President's Message and Treasury report, which led importers to look for shipments ti) meet the foreign demand and a consequent increase in the supply of exchange. Commercial bills continue Bcarce at rates varying from 108 '4 for inferior to UKI for prime. Southern bankers' bills drawn against cotton would bring 109, but there are none offering to an amount worth mentioning. The money market was easy ander a superabundance Of capital at six per cent, with exceptions at seven. The Influx of currency continues, while thc demand ls dis? proportionately light and the bataneo in the Sub-Treasu? ry has increased to about seventy-three millions. Tho demand for money at the West is becoming more brisk, owing to the pork-packing season having commenced, and the rate of discount at Chicago is steady at ten per cent per annum at the banks. Exchange on thc East, bowever, remains at par buying and 1-10 premium sell? ing, showing that the current is still in this direction. The discount line here is steady and dull at 7@9<?l0@ 13 for the first and second grades of commercial paper; bat lenders aro for the most part reserving their forces for more profitable speculative uses, after the firs: of January.- Herald, Saturday, December 30. A NEW BANE. The prospectus of the English and American Bank has been issued in London, with a proposed capital of ?1.800.000, Ot about *i2,G32,500 in American currency, ?ner- ?'o tr be sixty thousand shares, of thirty pounds sterling ev.n, of which thirty thousand shares only aro at present to be issued. Of these, twenty-five thom;aud shares have Leen already taken, leaving' five thousand filiares yet to be subscribed, for the prospectus recites that this undertaking "is intended chiefly to transact credit and exchange banking business in Great Britain and America, but more especiahy lu the latter country, where an extensive field exists for its operations, and whoie such a oank is greatly desired." It is further ex? plained that "in order to provide the broadest aud strongest basis for the operations of the company, ar? rangements have been made with thc Oriental Bank Corporation, and with th*? Union Bank of London, under ?winch the English aud Arn rican Bank will be enabled to engage in tho credit and exchange business in Amer? ica and elsewhere, on tho very heft footing." ' PRODUCE MABKET. FLOCB.-The market for State aud Western flour was less active, and prices, though very Arm, were without -special variation. The sales comprised G000 bushell at oar subjoined quotations. Southern flour was ia good demand, and prices ruled very steady. The sales reached 1000 barrels. Canada flour was quiet, but prices were without noticeable change. Rye flour was inactive. Corn meal was in better demand, and sales were made of 500 bbls. Brandywine at $4 75, and about 20 puncheons do. at $24 75@25. The sales were about 30,000 bushels at 90c.(g>95c. for unsound, and 96c. (5/96 Sc for sound mixed Western. Malt was quiet and nominal Tho demand for barley was inactive, but prices were nominally unchanged. COTTON.-Thc market continued active, and yester? day's advance was easily maintained. Some holders were asking 54c. for middling New Orleans. We learned of no sales, however, above our subjoined quotations, at which the market closed buoyant and firm.
