Laziness. President Clowry of the Western Union Telegraph company, holds that latinees, more than alcohol or any thing else, is responsible for the fail ures that men and women make of their lives. "Take the tramp," taid President Clowry one day. "What is the tramp's domin?t trait? Is it not laziness? You may say the tramp is fond of liquor. Wei!, I answer that ho is fonder of idleness. Ho could swim in liquor if ho would work for it. But he will not work. , "All failures are lazy. But thc laziest failure is the tramp. A tramp knooked at the baokdoor of my cous in's farm in Vermont one hot after noon. 'Lady,' he said to tho oook, 'will ye spare a poor feller a drink of water?' 11 'Certainly,' sho answered. 'Here's a tumbler and there's tho pump.' " 'Thank you kindly,' paid the tramp. 'And now, if you'll just work the handle, we shan't be long.' " A Very Clever Rascal. Russell Sage was talking the other day about a dishonest but plausible broker. "I have caught this man," he said, "io a dozen shady transactions. He has always, though, been ready to ex cuso himself." Mr. Sage smiled. Then he resumed: "He reminds me of a ohap who broke a plate olass window one day. As soon ae he had broken the window he hurried off as fast aa he oould go. But the shopkeeper had seen bim. The shopkeeper carno after him and grabbed him by the collar. " 'Aha, you broke my window, didn't you, eh?' he said. " 'Yes, and didn't you see me run ning home for the money tc pay for it?* said the other."-New York Timos.___ Irishman Had His Doubts. . As is well known, tbe Rev. Robert Collyor, of New York, was a black smith in Germantown, Pa., before he beoame a preacher, says SaooesB. Once, when there was little work at hand, he asked a builder in his neigh borhood for something to do. The litter ??pli?d ib at ali he could give him would be a job oarryiog a hod. "I'm your man," replied the black smith promptly. Years afterward, while an imposing edifioe was being ereoted in Chicago for Dr. Collyor, he was standing among the beams watching the pro gress of the work, when an Irish man oame along with a hod of br toko, pr. Collyor Bp?ke to him and he paused. "This is har'rd work, coir," said ihe Irishman. "I know that well," answered Dr. Collyor- " in my day I've carried the hod myself." "The Irishman stared at me an in stant," said Dr. Collyer, in relating the incident, "and then went on his way mumbling something that sound ed suspiciously like 'I wouldn't a' be layed th' parson was suoh a liar.' "No personal aooounts, large or email, wanted here; we do business only with large corporations." This was the reply the president of one of the $25,000,000 Wall street banks gave to an inquirer as to the minimum deposit that institution would accept. It was a notification that thia was distinotly a "wholesale bank." Suoh an answer would not have been made five years ago. But this is a new age. The billion-dollar trust and the $25, 000,000 bank are to Wall street what wireless telegraphy is to electricity wonders. The vast demands of mod ern industry, often requiring the ne gotiation of a loan of $5,000,000 upon a few hours' notice, with frequent calls for stupendous accommodation from transcontinental railroads or syndicates financing foreign Govern ment bond issues, have called into being these new banks-veritable in carnations of power, holding, indeed, the safety and happiness of a people in their hands.-Saturday Evening Post. _ CASTOR IA Sta Infante and Children. flt KM Yet Han Always Bought Bears tho Signature of - A widow bas a mighty quiet, soft way of making yon do a thing you want to do. HE SAVED HIS CROPS. Nebraska Man's Story of the Way Ho Killed the Grasshoppers. A gentleman who used to live af. University place was growing wheat in southern Nebraska when tho grasshoppers struck him. He had a forty aero iield of wheat that year, promising a big yield, and the pros pect of its having to go to feed his enemies, tho grasshoppers, was gall ing almost beyond endurance. Very EO?"n after the vanguard of the hop pers appeared, however, this gentle man made an entomological discov- j cry that saved his crop. "I found," he said, "that the grasshoppers wcro in the habit of climbing the wheat stalks every morning to spend the day feeding on what was intended to feed mo und my family. 1 used to go out to the field to seo how they were getting ou every morning, and in my impatience at the liberties they were taking with my wheat I would occasionally strike at a clump of them as they hung to a stalk and knock them to the ground. "After awhile I noticed that when a grasshopper .vas thus dis lodged ho made no further elTort to get his dinner, hut remained on the ground uutil the regular time to climb the stalk next morning. Im mediately on mnking this important discovery I went and took down our long wiro clothesline o nd called my wife to como and help me. Then we went through that forty acre field, dragging tho clothesline over the wheat between ty, and knocked all the grasshoppers to tho ground. There they stayed till the next day. "Next morning we gave tho hop pers just time enough to get well started up the stalks when we went out and repeated the proceeding of the day before. Tho result was tho same, and in thc course of a few days every grasshopper in that field had died of starvation. Our neigh bors came out every morning to jeer at us and called us a pair of old idiots, but we harvested the only wheat crop in that part of Nebraska that year."-Nebraska State Jour nal. _ The Ainua of Japan.
