Tucker on the South Carolina side ami Kueker <>n the Geor gia side, gave a picnic .Saturday at Tucker's Ferry, which a number ol' Lonrndcsvillc people attended. Thc Due West Band furnished the music tor the occasion, and short talks were made by Col. Kueker and Mr. K, Marion Kueker. Mr. .Ino. I'. Edwards, ol' Abbeville, was in town Saturday afternoon hut is now at Latimer visiting his uncle, Mr. Robert Hell. A party of young men left here last Monday ami spent the week very pleas antly fishing and camping at Cherokee Shoals, on Savannah Uiver. They re port plenty ol' tish and all kinds ol' fun. MeCalla reached here Fri day from Washington, where he has heida position in the Const. Depart ment for about a year. Mr. Mi Calla is off on a vacation of a month, most of which he expects to spend hero with his parents, Mr. and, Mrs. I. ll. Me Calla. Thc Iva baseball team came down Saturday afternoon and played tho Lowndc3ville nine on the grounds at the school building. The game was called at the end ot' tho seventh inning with a score of Vi to :> in Lowndes villo's favor. Mr. and Mrs. ,Ias. T. Latimer re turned Saturday afternoon after a visit of about two weeks to friends and rel atives at Atlanta, Harris Springs and Waterloo. They were accompanied by Messrs. Ralph and F.dward Mason, who will spend a week or two here. Sev eral years ago when their fri her, Kev. E. W. Mason, was pastor of the local Methodist church this was their home, and their many old friends are glad to see them again. Miss Ethel Speer is at home after spending several weeks at Franklin Springs, Gu. Mr. Mark Speer is visiting relatives near Elberton, Ga. Robert and Annie, the son and daughter of Mr. Jno. Henry Hell, are seriously ill with malarial fever. Two children of Mr. N. H. Suther land have been iu a very serious con dition, one with scarlet fever, but they ave now thought to be almost out of danger and fairly on the way to re covery. Mrs. D. K. Cooley has been con lined t!o her room for some time with intermittent fever. On Monday, August, 5th, nt 10:30, tho white soul of little Thomas, the only boy and youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. D. Cooley, left tho pain-racked little body and now the once happy homo is desolate and the empty chair, the cherished playthings, tho little garments, will but intensity the grief of tho bereaved parents for a time. There remains, however, thc beautiful thought of another and painless world, a blight, joyous childworld of love and beauty, where father and son, mothor and child, will be reunited after a brief separation into a closer and holier bond than we of earth car knew. Thc fatal scarlet lever was tho cause of his death and he lived only live days after the first attack of tho disease. The funeral was from tho house Tuesday morning at ten o'clock and the interment at the Presbyterian graveyard immediately afterward. The heart-felt sympathy of the com munity is extended to the bereaved parents in this, their dark hour of great sorrow. MCDAVID HORTON. Pendleton Items. Miss Julia Roberts, of Charlotte, N. C., who haB boen spending some weeks with her old friends returned to her homo last Saturday. Mrs. Link and children, of Chester, . S. C., is visiting her parents, Rev. and Mrs. ll. Mckees. Camp Tallie Simpson reorganized and held their annual election last Saturday, and elected the same old officers, with the exception of Mr. M. C. Dickson in place of Esquire E. H. Shanklin, deceased, and Rev. Mr. Lido. J. C. Stribling, commander; M. C. Dickson, 2nd lieutenant; J. W. Simp son, Ord lieutenant; R. E. Sloan, adju tan,; Ker. Mr. Lido, chaplain; Dr. Davant, sergeant; Dr. McWhorter, assistant sergeant; VV. M. Gibson, treasurer. After the organization the mass meeting was held nt the stand, the object looking to the establishing a Confederate Veterans' Home, and was a grand success as a beginning. Monday after noon we had a heavy rain, and this morning, Tuesday, it is still cloudy with every appearance nf more rain. This rain comes very opportunely for the sowing nf turnips, nf which every farmer should plant sufficient for his own use and to feed to his stock. Mrs. Wooten was called yesterday by a message over tho phone to the bedside of her mother, Mrs. Simpson, at Autun, who is critically ill with out little hopo of recovery. INCOGNITA. /arline News. Tiie /arline correspondent has been absent all summer so I will give you a few ?lots. Our farmers arc through work and are now enjoying their much needed rest, eating fruits and melons. Our melon crop is line and crops asa whole look very promising, though we are needing rain. There is a great deal of sickness in our community. Mrs. T. J. Bowen has been right sick but isconvnlescent. Mr. lt. O. Brauyou and Mrs. S. M. Cal lahnm are also on the sick list, being threatened with fever. Death again visited our community last Sunday and boro away the little infant of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Robinson. It survived its little twin Bister only two weeks. We extend our deepest sympathy to tho bereaved parents. Tho picnic on tho 27th was not so largely attended as McLaurin didn't come,-the only speaker being Mr. A. C. Lu ti mer's, but thc occasion was quito pleasant, notwithstanding the tight that took place. The students of Zarlino Academy held a pleasant reunion at the Island last Saturday. The trustees of tho Zarline, school will meet nt Mr. B.O. Branyon's house next Saturday to elect the teacher for next session. Miss Clayton Kobinson is at Con verse studying book-keeping.
