Local News* WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 1899. Septus Items. Business has boen very dull for the past few days, ou account of tho bad, disagreeable*weatlier. Very little farm work has been done up to the present /time. Some of our oldest citizens say that this has been thc worst winter that they have ever experienced. A very hard storm of wind and rain ?visited this section on Saturday night, tfth inst., which blew down a good many trees and unroofed the crib of Mr. J. H. Black. Mr. J. 1?. Wilson has moved into town and is now occupying a house on Mud Hole street. Mr. B. S. Watson, who lives on Pcn , die ton street, has put up a new shop and is prepared to do all kinds of shop .work. Hon. George Taylor has been re elected Mayor by an overwhelming majority, and Frank Harper Chief of Police. W. X. Hunmcutt still holds the posi tion of President of our Fun Makers* Club. # The Slater school is being taught by a- Mr. Cothran from Abbeville. He seems to be the right man in the right place. Rev. R. G. Martin preached a good sermon at Willis" Chapel last first Sun day. Mr. J. E. Garvin has been appointed -to look after the roads in Garvin Town ship. There will be a singing at Flat Rock OIL the third Sunday in this month, also at Sharon on the first Sunday in April. The public is invited to be present. A little nine-months-old infant of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Swauey died on the 27th ult., of pneumonia, and was buried at Sandy Springs on the day following its death. The parents have the sym pathy of the entire community. The farmers still talk of decreasing the cotton acreage this year, and have made their guano orders to conform with such. When the dark clouds roll by and the song of the whip-poor-will can be heard in the valley and on the hill, and when we get back from our "coon" hunt down on Corner Creek, where the iice-dog barketh long and loud, and where the catfish wiggleth his tail, you | may hear from us again. L. ESSIK. j Lowndesville Items. Lowndesville will soon have two new doctors, Dr. Matthews, of Elberton, "Ga., and Dr. Wilson, of A.ntrevillc. Dr. Wilson was on our streets last week, and Dr. Matthews will arrive on the 14th. We will gladly welcome them in our midst, and hope that they .will be pleased with their new home. We regret that Dr. B. A. Henry has I left us, and predict for him a success- ! ful career in Anderson, where he will i practice in the future. At present he is taking ? special course in Baltimore, j and will go from there to New York j for another course. Mrs. Henry is vis- i iting at the home of lier father, Mr. ! Oglesby, in Elberton. Mrs. B. Bolin Allen has bought the house and lot recently owned by Dr. Henry. Mr. aud Mrs. De Witt Barnes gave a dinner to a party of friends, which was greatly enjoyed by all present, Friday. The same day. Mr. and Mrs. I?. C. Kay gave a delightful dinner to a few congenial people, winch will be re membered as a most pleasant occasion. Apropos of the recent movement in literary circles, it might be well to state that Lowndesville claims the honor of having organized the first Henry Tim rod Club in the State. It was organ ized over two years ago, and since then have studied Southern literature until within the last two or three months. A few of the anthers studied are: Henry; Timi'od, Gilmore Simms, Paul H. Hayne, Sidney Lanier, Joel Chandler Harris, George W. Cable, James Lane Allen, Thomas Nelson Page, John Ks- 1 ten Cooke. For the last two or three months we have not adhered strictly to our original purpose of studying only Southeru ar thors, and have read the j best works of J. G. Holland, Lew Wal lace and Fenimore Cooper. The Club j meets at intervals of two weeks, on Friday evenings. Will give program of next meeting, which takes place on the 17th inst., in my next letter. Mci). II. I Townrille Items. Thirty-three members of the Baptist Church tit this place asked and receiv ed their letters on thc first Saturday of this month. Dr. S. G. Bruce, of this place, was oft'on a business trip last week. Some of our old soldiers contemplate going to the Bennion in Charleston. Rev. Mr. McGuare, of South Union, visited his friend, F. M. Bruce, on the first Sunday. We learn that J. L. ?. Whitfield is erecting anothervdwellinghouse as fast as'he eau get the lumber hauled. Rev. Mr. Hameter preached an inter esting sermon last Sunday, after which the Lord's Supper was administered. Messrs. L. C. McCniley and .1. V. Johnson wore out sporting last Sun day. Look out, girls, and be ready: they mean business. Miss Ellie Bagwell, ot' Seneca, is visit ing friends and relatives here. Miss Lessie Cummings and .Miss Maude Cromer were; the guests ol' Miss Dalrymple recently; The schools in this section are well attended and doing good work. Smith is changing thc looks of his plantation a great deal by doing some repairing and clearing. The roads have ween in a liad lix all winter, and it scons as if they arc not going to get any better. Mr. "Gus" AA'elborn, who now owns tlic Harper place, is soon ixoinix to have one of thc finest farms in the County; Mr. Horton, our merchant, is doing a hustling business. Messrs. Hutchison fc AVelhorn, our ginners, have "both received a good patronage the past season. AV. S. Hutchison, our M. I)., gets a highly commendable practice. His field of work knows no bounds. itseems that there is some irregulari ties about the management of a neigh boring Postoflice. It is reported that at times when you would like to have your mail you have to wait until the P. M. gets over a big "jamboree" before you get it. Such lias been the case several times, and if there is not a "stop" something is going to bc "did." AA'e arc sure that there is some one in the community that can "teach" Post Office and teach it correctly. JOEKEK. Bolenian News. lt is with sorrow we hear of thc death of Mr. Thomas L. Gibson, which occur red at his home near South Union. Oconee County, the 5th inst. He had been a great sufferer for a year or more from consumption. He was about (?0 years old, and was born and raised in this section. He leaves four sons and three daughters to mourn his loss, his wife having preceded him to thc grave about seven years. Mr. Gibson was very popular with all who knew him, and his many friends will regret, to hear of Iiis death. Mr. Geo. AV. Jolly, who hus been at tending the high school at McCormick, S. C., has returned home for the pur pose of making a crop. Miss Lessie Cummings, of Belton, is visiting Mr. Dalrymple's family. Messrs. L. A. and AV. H. Cole went to Lavionia, Ga., last week on private business. Mr. John Burns and wife, of Oconee. visited Mr. F. AA*. Cole and wife last week. It is said by those who profess to know that the peaches arc all killed in the bud, and that they will not bloom this Spring. Wheat is looking line in this section. SOKinn?-EK. Sinipsonville News. Miss Pearl Norris, one of Flat Hock's most charming young ladies, took charge of the Massey Chapel school on the (?th inst. We wish her much suc cess. Mr. James Drake has a flourishing school at this place. We think he is doing much and lasting good. A pleasant sociable was given at the residence of .Air. Alonzo Herron last Friday night. Mr. X. H. Newell, who is attending Clemson College, visited his parents last Saturday. He is looking well and enjoying good health. Messrs. James Drake. Sam Dean and Matt. Felton went visiting last Sunday night and almost forgot to leave. Cow Hov. South Anderson Dots. The young men have organized a de bating society at Providence Academy. They meet every second and fourth Saturday nights. We hear that au abundance of tears have been shed since a certain clevel and handsome bachelor moved oft" so far. Well, don't worry, girls, rumor says he will come back some time in the near future. Mr. S. A. Jones is very sick at this writing. We hope he will soon recov er. One of our young men went to see his best girl, and, on taking a ride, dis covered that his mother's old goose had gone to setting in his buggy.
