Mr. J'MUor In the I NTI:I.M<.KM'MC of August::, we notice au.urttcld from tho pen of one of those great Georgia prohi bition apostles, Mr. W. I). Howley, of Kl horton. lie thinks he has plainly shown to the psoplo of South Carolina th.it a prohibition law can he enforced, ami ho tries TO prove it hy citing us to tho little town ot Elberton. He says that prohibition is being enforced in that place. We have been informed that lhere are al least one-half do/.sti blind tigers with open eyes helng operated at that place. Wo will jie t ask Howley to ex amino into the success of prohibition io the Stale i.i Maine. There limy haven so-called prohibition law and to-day tho statistics ut Washington show that there are o\-er i '.ev en hundred licensed bar rooms in that Slate, licensed hy the Fed eral t?overiiuient. Wo have repeatedly saul, and ive still say, that it would he justas easy to draw the North Pole and South Polo together with ii ham?string as it would to enforce a prohibition law in this or any other State lam as much opposed to the sale of liquor as W. I). Hawley, hut tho sale of it will never be stopped until tho making of it is stopped. Then, and not bef?te, we will have a prohibition law that eau be enforced. We would like very much for Mr. Bew ley to tell us why it is that every man who drinks liquor is ?nmg to vote for prohibition? Unless they know or think that it will bring liquor to their very doors, wo cannot imagine why they will vote that way, for we know, and Bewley knows us well as any one else, that tbe liquor men are opposed to a prohibition law that will prohibit. Weare in favor of a law that will ship the manufacture of alcoholic liquors, but we are certaiuly not in favor of a prohibition law that will open six blind tigers to where there ls ono dispensary.
