During the past month I have had two letters from young women asking for aid in securing positions as hospi? tal nurses. They were both of them untrained, one of them attending a leading fe? male college in this State, and both expressed a wish to make nursing their life work. In this day of unrest when woman are on every side seeking, struggling for some means of livelihood, it is a subject of comment that so few of them seem to select nursing as a pro? fession. It may be to some extent the same prejudice which made the South? ern women of twenty years ago shrink from becoming public school teachers. The thought of teaching the children of Tom, Dick and Harry seemed to be the only side of the question. They did not realize that there was another side to the position which rendered it much easier and more satisfactory, to the woman who would earn her own bread, than that of teacher in a private school. So it is with the profession of a trained nurse. The one great objec? tion seems to be the fact that a nurse cannot choose her own patients, but must nurse any one who is brought to the hospital and placed under her care. This is true, but in what posi? tion is it that we can choose with whom, and for whom, we work. Now the chief consideration for a woman who must go out into the world of workers is the amount and certainty of her pay. Nine cases out of ten the pay from a corporation is more certain than from the individual. As to the amount earned, there are few better positions than that of a nurse in a hospital, few positions where one is called on for smaller outside expendi? ture. It is not necessarily a hard life; first, because the hours are rea? sonable and regular. The duties are not so difficult and certainly not so unnatural as are those in many other, I could say most other, positions in which women earn their living. The many conveniences of the hospital render the more onerous work in nur? sing light as compared with nursing in one's own family. And, I am sure, there are few, if any, women who would consider the care of the sick in thoir own^homes a very onerous job. It is true that in the last case love makes labor light, but bo it is to a great extent in nursing strangers. They are human and suffer, those two facts alone are sufficient to gain for them the sympathy of a woman. To be born a woman is to be born with the natural instincts of a nurse. The desire to sympathize with suffering and alleviate pain. Then, why is it that more of our girls do not fit themselves for hospital nurses ? It is a thoroughly womanly vocation, much more so than numbers of other places that women are strug? gling to fill. I remember having been told by one of the most brilliant and cultured women of this State that if she had daughters to train she would make them take at least one year's training in a hospital, as she consid? ered the knowledge gained there of as much importance as any other that could be taught to a woman. So, you girls who should think of educating yourselves to be able to earn your own living, some of you try nurs? ing.?Emily McLaics, in Sunday Chronicle. ? Mrs. Cramer, of Neenah. He Was Dolo? Well. Jack Negly was one of the moun? taineers of the Cumberland whom I had known better perhaps than any of them, for Jack had borrowed a few dollars from me to buy a yoke of steers with, and the number of times be came to me to get the debt renewed brought me into very close acquaint? ance with him. lie was a farmer in small way, and be was never k lov, u to be out of debt. He was a renter and at least every other season he was occupying a different farm. By my advice, he had moved the year before into an entirely new field, at least a dozen miles from his usual haunts, and I bad not seen him for several months. When I did see him, at last, it was by accident as business called me into his neighborhood. As I rode past bis place be bailed me from the cornfield and came out to the fence. "Hello," I exclaimed, "is this your farm ?" "Yes, and I jiat come over to tell you, Colonel, that I'll be ready to pay part of that claim uv yourn'n afore long." "You must be doing well ?" "I think I'm doin' fust rate, and I'm powerful obleeged to you, Colonel, fer headin' me this away." "I'm always glad to help if I can." "I knowed that, Colonel, and that's why I come away over here so fer frum home. Hit's kinder strange to me, but ez long ez I'm doin' ez well ez I am I'm a-goin' to stand hit." "Are you making any money ?" Jim's face brightened perceptibly. "No, I ain't, Colonel," he replied hopefully, "but I'm losin' it slower'n I ever done in my life afore." It struck me as rather odd at first, but upon more mature reflection I con? cluded that Jim might have reason for his hopefulness. ? It is computed by a statistician of the curious that Queen Victoria's hand, which is said to be a handsome one, has signed more important State papers and been kissed by more men than the hand of any other queen that ever lived. The queen does a great deal of political work of which the public rarely hears. Every day sealed boxes of documents are brought to her and in one year she has read as many as 28,000 State papers. 8fl? The face of the impetuous one was flushed and there was the unmistak? able evidence of indignation in her manner. "Well," she exclaimed with a warn? ing and a threat in her tone, "I'd like to sec a man kiss me." The eyes of the other one closed softly against the dazzling flash of those of her companion, and a gentle glow came to her face. "Yes!" she answered dreamily.
