BY CLINKSCALES & LANGSTON. '. ANDERSON, S. C, WEDNESDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 26, 1894._VOLUME XXIX.?NO. 26 WHAT SHALL I GrIVE FOR XMAS PRESENTS ? These words are in tho minds of all of ns now. We want to give something? That isn't too expensive! That will be appreciated! That is useful! That is needful! If you...want sometliing for your male friends it will pay you to inspect the line of Gents' Fuanishings at B. 0. EVANS. & CO. The Successful Adyertizer I Is the man who writes something the people will read, and reading, bolieve. In tils age of education and enlightenment, when men read and think for themselves, - all that stuff about "selling goods cheaper ' than your competitors buy them," being r t?te '*only competent dealers in the line," ?^handling better stuff, than anybody else,": AC, is mere clap-trap, and subjects the : writer and the firm back of it to the contempt of all right- thin king people. The man who has something to offer, and then tolls the folks about in a plain, business way, is the man who "gets there," and getting there, stands, I Lots of people handle Faint Some handle one kind, some another, but. they all realize, if they h ive any business sense at all, that fn order to make that business a permanent success it is absolutely neces? sary to give the people the very best ma? terial. This we have tried to do, and at a price that puts it in the reach of all. In this connection we call attention to j.the fact that crops are about laid, by, time ? is Jplaitiful, and . a litt? e paint not only ireihenB and b^jantines, but improves won? derfully tho Banitary condition , of the premises. If your house is all right may \ be ^efence needs a coat. A little Paint would keep that old buggy from falling 4own,and the wagon .might, last s. year or tyro Icuger by spending seventy-five cents or s dollar in Paint on if.. Remember this, the longer you pHt it off the more it takes and the less good it dew*. Remember another thing, it.costs jusi as much, and tat.s just as much time, to have cheap paint put t\ as ii does good Paint. Always buy the ,<sst, even if you -pay more for it. S.?We call ycur attention to our stock of Gents' Neck Wear, La? dies' and Gentlemen's Silk and Linen Handkerchiefs, aud other Novelties, for the Holiday Trade. Call and sec us. Youis very truly, C. F. JONES & CO. LOCAL NEWS WEDNESDAY, DEC. 26, 1894. Tbe time for paying taxes has been ex? tended until tbe 1st of March. Nearly all of the P. M. I. Cadets have gone home to spend the Christmas holi? days. Rev. J. E. Fofirartle, of Greenwood, will preach in the Presbyterian Church nest Sunday morning and evening. At a meeting of the Presbyterian Con? gregation last Sunday, Rev. J. N. Sum merel, of Tarboro, N. C, was called to the pastorate of the Church. The City Supply Ordiounce for 1895 is published in another column. The tax? payers of the city should read It carefully, and file it away for fnture reference. We are very sorry that we have not an income of $5,000. If we conld secure that amount of money every year, we would cheerfully pay our tax to ' Uncle Sam." Mr. Allen McDonald, of this County, has decided to move to Wilkes County, Ga., and leaves in a few days for his new homo. We join hin friends in wishing him much success in his new home. We are under obligations to our clever friend, Mr. W. P. Stevenson, for a lot of fine rutabaga turnips,. Mr. Stevenson has a fine crop of turnipi, and has been selling a great many of tbem in this market. A little cbild of Officer Eiog, of this city, accidently fell into the fire place a few days ago and severely burned one of its hands. It is very palnfnl, but the child is doing as well as possible, and it is hoped tbe band will not be seriously injnred. The Printers wanted to enjoy the Christ? mas holidays, and therefore we only issue a half sheet this week. The Printers have worked hard all through the year, and we know the many readers of the Intelligen? cer will not object to tbem taking a few days rest. Alba Hey wood at Opera House, "Edge wood Folkc,'' which will be presented here on Thursday evening next, by tbe Hey wood Company, is the merriest comedy on the stage. It is one big laugh from be? ginning to end. It takes ils name from a New England village, and tbe "Folks" are some of the people that tbe comedy has to deal with. As Tom Dlllaway, Mr. Hey wood has a character that enables him to display his mimetio ability, which is very marked, to tbe best possible advac tsge. -His character impersonations and other specialties are distinctive features <f the performance. "Down in Injlany" is a very clever little curtain raiser in which comedy, pathos and natural humor are admirably blended. Last Saturday night, about lOo'clook, at the home of Mr. Wm. Carroll, near Pendleton, John Dickson shot and killed Henry MoAlister. Both the parties are young white men, and were rivals for the hand and heart of a daughter of Mr. Carroll. On Saturday night McAllister called to see the young lady, and it was not long before Dickson came in. Tbe three were sitting in the room enjoying a pleasant conversation, and it seems that Dickson, who had been drinking whisky, began to feel its effects. After awhile Dickson asked the young lady to go out on the piazza with him, say? ing that he wanted to have a talk with her. The young lady very courteously refused to go, and invited the young man to keep his seat and talk to her tbore. This seemed to enrage Dickson. who got up and began to abuse McAlister, at tbe same time tell? ing McAlister that he was going to whip him. McAlister told him that he had no cause to fight him and did not propose to have a row with him at Mr. Carroll's home. Dickson then drew his pistol, shot McAlister dead and ran out of the house, dropping a flask of whiskey at the door. Dickson made his escape and up to Monday night had not been captured. Trial Justice Shanklin held an inquest over tbe body Sunday morning, and a verdict in accordance with the above facts was rendered. The murder has occasioned a good deal of excitement in the section where it occurred, as the de? ceased was a popular and worthy young man. A party is searching for the mur? derer, and if he is captured it is feared another lynching will be the result. Dickson is a comparative stranger in the neighborhood, having lived there only two or three months. He is uaid to be a native of Georgia, and that he lived at Pelzer prior to his coming into the Pen? dleton section.
