The sound of her friends' voices of course aroused her at once, and- though she could scarcely speak above a whisper she tried to entertain them. As an inevitable consequence her fever instantly began to rise, a bright flush appeared upon her cheek which a few minutes before had been quite-pale, and every symptom of \hVdiBease.grew decidedly alarming. ?''.To imagine that one who is very ill desires to be entertained, is altogether erroneous. -All that is wanted is peace and quietness, to be allowed to rest undisturbed in that semi stupid state which many diseases, and sometimes the remedies prescribed by physicians, kind? ly ? envelop the mental, consciousness in order to insure inertness, so thst the body may have time to heal. S At no time iu there greater need of that indescribable quality called "tact;" or should outside,topics be discussed unre servedly, something is- sure to be said which had much better be left unsaid. And the invalid/ who was abnormally animated and excited while in the pres? ence of the. caller, will be likely, after his departure, to have a period of prostration which will do more harm than the visit did good. It is always depressing to a sick person to7hear of others who ftre ill; yet how constantly do we bear visitors entertain them with minute and. harrowing accounts of the illness which they them? selves have passed through, or which their friends have experienced 1 They seem to think .that only such topics suit the sick room, while in reality tbey of all others should be tabooed. The object of the visit should be to cheer and not to lower, the spirits of the. invalid, .who surely has enough troubles of bis own to do'that; and while it is noticeable that they are prone to exaggerate every disa greeable sensation, hopeful cheerishness is but faintly accepted. . When -one has been sick a long time, the monotony of the surroundings becomes exceedingly wearisome; so it is a good idea to carry something new?any little simple gift, a freshly gathered flower, a bit of fruit, a book or a picture? just to-let them know they are -in your thoughts when absent. Unless one has passed through some such ordeal, it is impossible to realize how good it is to have something fresh to look at, the weary eye3 grow so tired of old things, the same pictures, the furni? ture of the room, and even the dres3 of the attendant. A lady, once told me that during a recent illness the wall paper iu her room had tortured her almost beyond endurance?the patterns persistently shaping themselves into dia? monds wherever her eye happened to light. Growiog plants are also very accepta ble in'a sick room, not too many, just a few, so-that they may be changed often before the invalid becomes tired of tbem, or the plants begin to droop. The tedi? um of a protracted illness may be much lessened by becoming interested in flow era, noting the changes which appear day by day, counting the new leaves and buds and rejoicing in th<) beautiful blos? soms. So many interesting little experi? ments, too, may be carried on in even a small window garden, in thd propagation of plants by seeds,, cutting and grafts. Life and health are what the invalid longs for, and even forms of inanimate life and luxuriant healthfnlness are fas? cinating in the extreme. After one becomes convalescent, the mind runs principally on something good to eat; any dich then, even the simplest, if prepared away from home, is a deli? cacy. At this time the discreet visitor can do a great deal of good. The inva? lid's mind wants to be taken away from himself; he really needs to be amused and entertained, and by that time all the possibilities of bis regular attendants are well night exhausted. He longs for a breath to the outer world, new people and new topics. In calling on even a convalescent, however, be sure not stay too long. Let your visit be like Sam Welter's letter, to his sweetheart?so short that the receiver will wish it were longer.?Hortense Dudley in Country Gentleman. Twenty-five Millions for n State's Honor, Baton Rouge, June 7.?The text of the proposed lottery amendment has been made public under the following caption : "An act providing for snbmission to the electors of flfe State for adoption or re? jection an amendment to the constitution of the State by inserting therein an arti? cle on levees, schools, charities, pensions, drainage and lotteries. If adopted said amendment shall read: 'In aid of levees, schools, charities, pensions and drain age.'" The proposed amendment embraces a contract between the State and John R. Morris and associates, under which for twenty-five years from January 1st, 1894, Morris & Co. agree to pav the State $25, 000,000 or $1,000,000 per annum, paya? ble quarterly. Provision is also made for the expenditure of money to be received by the State annually as follows i Public schools, $250,000; levees, $350,000; charities and pensions, $200,000; city of New Orleans for drainage and sanitary purposes, $100,000.
